Statistical Musings : Does getting steals necessarily mean you have a good defense?

Just imagine if we had a healthy Barkley and his 14 rpg. We would be #1 Baby!!!!! Or if Dream didn't miss so much time.

Getting steals consistently is a protion of good defense, ala Eddie Jones. But more over, it means you have good instincts and anticipation. But to play good defense you have to do so much more, you have to have good footwork, desire, concentration, etc.

I would have to say emphatically that Francis 2.0 offensive rpg hurt more than helped the Rockets. While he going after the O rebounds, the opposing point guard was racing down the court the other way. This was a silly rookie mistake on his part.

While steals may not be a good indicator of a team defensive prowess, I don't think Rudy will be discouraging any Rocket from getting more steals per game.

IMO, the best indicator of a team's defensive ability is the opponent's field goal percentage in the fourth quarter. Most games are decided in the fourth and the teams that can routinely put the hammer down on defensive at the end of the game will win a lot of games.
