The laws are different for different places regarding shooting people who break into your home. In California, breaking and entering is a felony as long as there is intent to commit theft or another felony. Grand theft auto, theft by swindle, robbery, and armed robbery theft are all treated as felony crimes. Depending on the circumstance petty theft may be a felony or misdemeanor.

There's not much that can be done about the supply shortage and surging demand.

But, to both Biden and Trumps credits, they did send cash to people. As little as it was, it was still a baby step forward after decades of standing still.

There’s going to be an incident where there is mass casualties among the criminals
    And
The cable news media will blame the small business owners for shooting the people trying to rob them and destroy their business

Those are above petty thieves and shoplifting. Breaking and entering a residence (which cars fall under too) and escalating to violence will upgrade to felony levels. This type of organized crime probably will, too, considering the amounts, but I wouldn't consider it petty theft when organized to this level.

Without the threat of violence, victims will find themselves in hot legal waters if they use deadly force to defend property.

this is the very definition of organized crime, but the FBI is too busy spying on political opponents and threatening parents who criticize school boards to do anything about it

Do you have FBI's priority list or something? Or did you get your perception of what they prioritize by click bait headlines that algorithmically are spoon feed to you because outraging you while massaging your preconceived beliefs is profitable?

    America’s Unamerican Smash-And-Grab
Americans are shocked by the rising Smash-And-Grab looting.

    tippinsights Editorial Board
    16.Dec.2021

Whether you call it robbery, thievery, stealing, or larceny, the fact is that the "smash and grab" actions being performed in liberal sinkholes such as San Francisco against department stores and other businesses are highly alarming. It would seem that the shoddy implementation of progressive policies, without proper groundwork and consideration of ground realities, is yielding detrimental results.

According to our latest Golden/TIPP Poll conducted in early December, 81% of Americans view the increase in violence as alarming vs. 11% who do not.

The main cause of the increased "smash and grabs" is directly related to liberal policies such as California's Proposition 47. According to the California Courts definition, Proposition 47 has three parts:

    1. Reclassification of certain theft and drug possession offenses from felonies to misdemeanors.
    2. It authorizes defendants currently serving sentences for felony offenses that would have qualified as misdemeanors under the proposition to petition courts for resentencing under the new misdemeanor provisions.
    3. It authorizes defendants who have completed their sentences for felony convictions that would have qualified as misdemeanors under the proposition to apply to reclassify those convictions to misdemeanors.
Within the first section of Proposition 47 lies the primary driver of "smash and grabs." Shoplifting is defined as "entering a commercial establishment with the intent to commit larceny while that establishment is open during regular business hours" where the value of the property does not exceed $950."

That is, according to the California penal code, if someone enters the store when employees are present (putting them at risk) and loots $950 worth of items (if not more, as seen in many of the smash-and-grab cases), they should be allowed to walk free without punishment.

This reclassification only allows criminals to get away with crimes instead of reducing crime itself. For instance, on November 19th, 20 to 40 people organized a burglary at a San Francisco Louis Vuitton store. It was not an act of opportunity but a raid organized to some extent through social media and messaging apps.

With only five officially arrested in the above case, criminals are growing bolder, leading to more smash and grab events, such as when 90 people raided a Nordstrom Rack at the Walnut Creek shopping facility on November 20th. An estimated $100,000 worth of goods were stolen there.

As a result, the city of San Francisco and other cities, such as Los Angeles, have hired more police officers to work overtime patrolling shopping malls. Increased police presence has had an impact.

A report by the San Francisco police shows a 67% decrease in assaults, a 91% decrease in burglaries, and an 82% decrease in thefts.

Break down in law and order is a threat to civil society. It affects everyone, to varying degrees. Even those who, in theory, support a radical shift in policing policy and the "defund-the-police" rhetoric are not immune. As the Golden/TIPP Poll reveals, there is palpable alarm across all sections of society.

What is probably worse than the "smash and grab" incidents themselves is the administration's response to it. While some Democratic representatives have been trying to downplay the occurrences, Jen Psaki, President Biden's press secretary, blamed the pandemic for the rise in crime.

While the pandemic may have been a contributing factor, it is foolish and downright pathetic to wash off all responsibility. The administration needs to take a hard look at the progressive policies they are pushing. While the sensitization of the police is necessary and welcome, it cannot come at the cost of law and order on the streets in the meantime.

Neither can a civilized society absolve an individual of responsibility for his actions, especially those that cause harm to property or others. Lack of consequence or punishment will only embolden criminals, especially those functioning in groups. While no one wants overcrowded prisons, letting vandals and looters go scot-free only paves the way for more crime.

According to Newton's third law, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If one reduces the police presence in an area where they are needed, crime will increase. The Biden administration should lead from the front to stop the country from spiraling into complete chaos. And, no, the pandemic cannot be held responsible for everything.
