I find it hilarious that he mentioned this, yet not one word about the environment or even the Moon/Mars ridiculousness.
Here's something else that came out funny... ... the Kay Report identified dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities... Not "weapons of mass destruction." Not "weapons of mass destruction programs." Not even "weapons of mass destruction-related programs." "Weapons of mass destruction-related program activities." And I love the descriptor "dozens." Not exactly "tons" but does have sort of an ominous ring to it, particularly when said by Bush. Of course, it would have been more accurate to say "We have found dozens of doodlings by Iraqi scientists." What a difference a year makes.
my favorites: cheney spilling his glass of scotch on bush at the end of his speech. "MEET MY VETO!!!!" "RELEASE THE COMPASSION!!!"
What was that about? Who is proposing cutting medicare benefits? And aren't both houses under Republican/Rovian control? That line was absurd.
i didnt watch the speech, i had sex and went to sleep instead. in that sense, it was a pretty good speech. I could kind of hear it in the background with some people laughing at it, though.
If you disagree with every single thing that he said then you prove yourself to be stubborn and unable to listen. Even the politicians that I am most opposed to I can find SOME common ground. If you disagreed with everything then you must be a radical extremist. He has ZERO public speaking skills? That's funny because his poll numbers sure do go up every single time after a speech in front of millions of people. Maybe he should take some lessons from Howard Dean huh?
Somebody noted that Bush was merely trying to reach out to young people and teach them the horrible consequences of drug use... like being a home run king or playing in the Super Bowl or becoming President or um, ... nevermind.
I thought his delivery of the speach was excellent. Zero public speaking skills?? Didn't agree with what he said, but i'll admit he said it well. Favourite part? THe cheering of his acknowledgement on the expiration of provisions of the Patriot Act. And Kennedy's dough-boy mug being flashed on the screen intermittingly. Scariest Part? Too much to mention: Economically: Increased spending (seemed he was continually 'doubling' spending on...) and,if I recall, increased 'non-discretionary' spending by 4% (which is greater than projected inflation) -- and likely excludes the big projects such as his war on terror, coupled with more tax incentives, while acknowledging that the deficit will continue at extraordinary levels for at least the next 5 years. I guess the goal of fiscal responsibility is just too much bother. Otherwise Extention of the Patriot Act, gay marriage issue (is this really a pressing constitutional issue?) and the TJ-esque crowing on WMD and world support for Iraq. In all, and entertaing hour. Good satire. Sad that it's real.
Found this on a blog... interesting. _____________ Then: From "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer pages 471-475" Hitler got to the core of his answer to the President's request that he give assurances not to attack any of thirty-one nations. "How has Mr. Roosevelt learned which nations consider themselves threatened by German policy and which to not? Or is Mr. Roosevelt in a position, in spite of the enormous amount of work which must rest upon him in his own country, to recognize of his own accord all these inner spiritual and mental impressions of other peoples and their governments? Finally, Mr. Roosevelt asks that assurances be given him that the German armed forces will not attack, and above all, not invade the territory or possessions of the following independent nations ..." Hitler then read out slowly the name of each country and as he intoned the names, I remember, the laughter in the Reichstag grew. Now: George W. Bush's State of the Union Address of 20 January 2004 "Some critics have said our duties in Iraq must be internationalized. This particular criticism is hard to explain to our partners in Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, the Netherlands, (cheering) Norway, El Salvador, and the 17 other countries that have committed troops to Iraq. " COMMENTARY: We were listening to the speech and early on thought that it was martial in spirit - even bellicose. In fact, it seemed similar to the sort of speech that a Hitler or a Kruschev might deliver. Then, to our immense surprise, Bush read out - slowly - a list of countries to make a point. This was very much like the well known episode where Hitler read out a list of countries in a speech in the Reichstag. (That speech, on 28 April 1939 is often shown in World War Two documentaries because it shows the Fuhrer in a rare lighthearted moment.) Now, we're not saying Bush is Hitler, but we cannot help but wonder what the speechwriter was thinking when that country-list was included - because even if most Americans aren't aware of the parallel, many others throughout the world (and especially in Europe) will not miss the eerie parallel.
Funny how this guy left out what happened immediatly after that. Bush looked directly at the smattering of applauding Democrats and said something to the effect of "but they will be renewed". That was followed by MUCH louder applause and a standing ovation, albeit from the other side of the isle.
"Key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year. " [Democrats applaud] "The terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule." [Republicans applaud] Now, what were the Republicans applauding? It sure sounded like they were happy ther would be a continuing terrorist threat.
An issue of such great consequence? Does he think that giving all adults rights to marry, regardless of the genders, threatens our country or individual Americans like terrorism? War? job loss? drug addiction? under-funded education? How many people will die if this law was changed? How many will lose their livelihood? How many will lose opportunities? None. But a lot will gain something. Give me a break. It's about shoving one's religious beliefs down everyone else's throat, even if it is the majority's opinion. If the law was equal for all, the US would be just as strong or stronger the next day. What a crock.
ah yes, all anti-bush policy-people are poor and live in communes, you found me out. Of course i used to be a republican and conservative, but things change when you see things outside the country.
I find this sort of comparison not only meaningless, but ultimately offensive. It trivializes the horror that was hitler's germany, and I'm surprised that you'd stoop to this level rim.
