Great intelligence gathering. Kudos for the hard work.

I like Jason Williams, Carlos Arroyo, and Artest as possibilities.

Jason Williams is done. He's a borderline backup at best now. 'Bout par with Rafer imo.

Carlos Arroyo is an interesting look at backup PG. I don't think he has a 3-point shot, but he seems to be quite a stable PG in terms of running the offense and finishing from midrange and in.

Artest is a no-brainer. Questionable package, but he's so good, it's a bonafide plus to any team he's on. Otherwise, I think we can take a look at Corey Maggette. Having Battier and Tmac start on the wings and bringing Maggette in off the bench would be a HUGE plus to our bench scoring. Dude draws fouls like nobody's business, and that's what we lacked, that physical, slashing play.

One PG we absolutely have to take a look at bringing in via S&T would be Andre Miller. He's getting old, but damn, can he still ball or what. Again, no 3-point range, but he runs the offense and finishes so well. I don't know if Philly would wanna keep him considering they just had a promising first-round playoff run against the Pistons, but it's worth a look anyhow.

2 guys that I'm really bummed we didn't manage to snag from the Sonics at the deadline this past season were Kurt Thomas and Delonte West. Having Thomas out there against the Jazz would give us a good physical Center to really bang Boozer around and shore up our interior defense and rebounding. Whereas West has some really good upside. I don't think he runs an offense as well as Rafer does, but his D is better than Rafer's at least, and he can score. Oh well, looks like those 2 guys will be staying with their respective teams for now.

    Actually...
    Code:

They're pretty darn close, if you look. And Rafer was a LOT more durable this past season and played WAY more minutes.

This team needs players who can hit from 3. Alston is slightly better from beyond the arc. That said, if the Rocket can sign him on the cheap, he might be a good pick up.

I'm not quite so optimistic on Artest. I think he'll do more harm than good on the Rockets. That said, he fits the profile of a Rockets need: great defender, decent shooter, can create his own shot. I just think he's too much of a head case, and I wouldn't take the chance.

I love Maggette, but I think he'll be too pricey in the end. Plus, with the abundance of SGs the Rockets already have, I don't think he's super high on their list.

They could always grab 'Stro Swift...

Ultimately, I think the Rockets will focus on a backup for Yao. I'm willing to bet that's Morey's biggest concern this offseason.

The one need I don't see listed enough for the Rockets is length on the perimeter. We have too many midget guards behind TMac and we are sorely lacking in athleticism and guys who can get their own shot from the guard/small forward position.

    Great thread.

I can't wait for the offseason activity to kick off.

I like how you didn't capitalize "utah jazz."

the rockets should try and move up in the draft rather than shake up the core, maybe give up someone to move up to 12-18 and try and get chris douglas-roberts who ca=ould move into the 6th man role and become the 3rd scorer or get someone like Roy hibbert who could be a great backup for yao as well as playing some PF, even someone like nicholas batum could be useful in rocket rotation, there are some good players in the draft that can help enormously rather than trying to move superstars and rotation players

offseason untouchables would be: Yao, rafer, landry, scola, battier

I added your length suggestion to needs, and I can't believe I didn't add athleticism sooner. Landry's impact alone is reason enough to believe more athleticism is going to help the Rockets.

    I'm glad you noticed. :D

I went and looked up the Nets payroll this past season, and here's what I took from it:
1.) Diop (made $2,146,000 last season) would only be a good fit for this team as a backup to Yao if the Rockets decide to pursue a wing player rather than a big. I'd venture to guess that they're looking for someone who can provide a bit more offensively. That said, if they land a legit third scorer at the 1/2/3, Diop would be a great backup 5.
2.) Man, I forgot just how BAD Vince Carter's contract is. YOWZAS. They have him on the hook until 2011? That's insanity (don't even go there). They are SO screwed.

Ron-Ron had a reasonably stable year with Sacramento - I'll take that risk.

    + offense
    + defense
    + intensity
    + shooting
    - crazy eyes - wait, is that a plus?

I'll take one whack-job on our team - if he is the kind of upgrade that Artest is.

Face it, we aren't likely to get a back-up center that is better than Scolandry - not for the mid-level exception. He's strong enough to slide him to the 4 at times when we go small - you could have a lineup of Scola/Artest/Battier/Tracy/Rafer when Yao is out.

Ideally, I'd have Yao, Scola, Artest, Tracy, Rafer, and Battier all stay around 30 minutes. That leaves 18 minutes for our backup PGs, and 42 minutes for Hayes and Landry.
