Rodman does have a little more length and he was much more athletic than Hayes. Hayes is an energy player, but Rodman could probably run up and down the court for hours in his prime. But I think it's a legitimate comparison. Hayes likely will never be as effective as Rodman, but he has many of the same strengths (and weaknesses) and he'll help his teams in similar ways. I made the comparison back in April. I'll reproduce the post here: ----------------------- This is purely a comparison between their "box score stats". I wanted to compare Rodman in his first 7 years with the Pistons to Chuck Hayes. To make it a balanced comparison, I made each stat per minute, and I also adjusted for pace (B-R.com and 82games.com shows possessions per game for teams). Even though the Pistons were one of the slowest pace teams in the league while Rodman was there, they still played at a faster pace than the current Rockets. So, the numbers below can be viewed as a pace-adjusted per-40 minute stats. Note the wide disparity in minutes played between Chuck Hayes and Rodman during his time with the Pistons. Some might claim that there isn't enough of a sample for Hayes to make the comparison meaningful. But actually, basketball stat people say that 250+ minutes is usually sufficient to get a good guage on how productive a player would be per minute. Hayes has played over 400 minutes this season, so it isn't unreasonable to expect similar per-minute production with more minutes. Specifically, Hayes has better rebounding numbers as a rookie than Rodman did his first four years, while Rodman was a more involved scorer early on. Hayes has been adept at getting steals, but he's also been called for a lot of fouls. Rodman also fouled at a high rate early on, though not quite at the same extent. Of course, more fouls are called in general in today's NBA than back in the late 80s.
Wow. Chuck Hayes looks even more impressive when correctly stacked up against Dennis Rodman like that. Good work, durvasa. Somehow the Rockets have become one of the better teams in the league at snatching up late round/undrafted talent (Spanoulis, Hayes and now Novak). Who knows, maybe even Eliyahu could become an NBA star in a few years. Carroll Dawson deserves some credit for his underrated scouting work.
As long as my boy doesn't start getting tattoos and dressing in wedding gowns yall can compare him to Rodman all you want! LOL Chuck has that sort of "fan favorite" effect where-ever he goes. His coaches, teammates, and fans all like his attitude and work ethic. I think what you saw him do last night is about what he will be able to do on the NBA level as far as scoring. Rebounding, he may get more with more minutes. But I wouldn't expect many, if any, 20 point games from him.
Not to mention Head at 24th. I've been thinking the same thing with such under the radar acquisitions coming up big for us and making other teams reconsider.
Interesting analysis durvusa. I like the idea of Hayes starting. He brings defense, rebounding and energy to the team. His offense needs to get better, like perfecting his midrange shot and finishing his layups like we've all said, but his game is mostly inside and shoots mostly layups and putbacks.
I would think Hayes is more comparable to a guy like Reggie Evans instead of a defensive player of the year guy like Rodman
The only reason I'd hesitate to compare Hayes to Evans is I don't consider Evans to be a very good defender. I think Hayes is much more effective on that end.
Just love Hayes wish he get double double everynight You were actually MAKING LAYUPS last game, keep the good work up Chuck!!!
Hayes has made a believer out of me. I believe he shold play 15-20 minutes max. And JH does a nice job off the bench, plus, is there any other player besides Battier right now who understands and runs defensive and offensive positioning on this team? I think not. Bonzi needs to get in shape, and then the mix should be a great fan topic 24-7. How bout them Mavs? lol....I hope they completely flame out to show the soft underbelly of that team.
There was a stretch last night when Deke and Hayes were on the floor when it seemed like they were getting every rebound and a hand full of points off put backs. I like him so far as the starter it certainly seems to be the best mix and it allows us to bring the scoring punch off the bench with Howard, Snyder, Head and eventually Bonzi. Lets get on a roll against the Knicks to get some momentum agianst Miami.
With hayes and Shane on the floor, the Rockets are 100% more energetic. He serves his purpose. Him and Shane clamped down on Dirk in the Dallas game. He is good for put backs and rebounding. If he developed a small mid-range jumper and got his fouls under control, I think he is the man for the job all other options considered on this team.
So has JVG settled on Hayes as a fulltime 5th starter or is it still based on individual matchups on a given night?
The only thing I don't like about Hayes is that he's just a foul waiting to happen. To be fair, though, he seems like he's improved on that the past couple games. I know he fouled out last game, but not very many of those were stupid fouls. It's kinda pathetic that he seems like he's already become a bigger asset than Juwan Howard, though... (Of course I mean pathetic for Howard)
Hayes is the PF we've been looking for. I didn't think Hayes could fill the spot but i'm now convinced he can. He's the rebounder that we've been looking for and he's an inside presence who can score layups. Believe it or not we didn't have this in juwan howard or swift last year..We're playing much better when hayes is in the court
JVG fixed the lineup. He played battier on PF at first..and it didn't work out because we were being outrebounded. Now when he plays Hayes at PF and Battier at SF, everything works out. Hayes gets the rebounds and Battier is getting more shots from the perimeter.
Um, no. The Mavs need to nut-up at some point later in the season and make a run at a lower seed. The last thing they need is a shot at Oden, Durant or someone else who could be really really good on that team.
