I would like to do a FULL water change. I purchased an undergravel filter for my tank and want to install it. Now as long as I keep the old filter and gravel wet for the length of time it requires for the water change the bacterial colony should be OK, right? I have bags so I can make the chage to the new water will be less stressful I have allowed the new water to reach a temperature of 75 degrees so it won't be too cold. What do you guys think?
keep as much of the water you have as possible, good water is good water....... either way the fish will likely NOT like the disruption
Yeah fish seem not to like ANY disruption except at feeding time. I also have a gravel vac and I am having trouble getting the damn thing to work. It's a simple vac, just a tube and a line, I tried to follow the directions and have only got it to siphon about 4 times. What do I need to do to get it to siphon right?
siphoning ...................................... put thumb on end, put large end in water and fill with water let thumb off a bit so that water moves down the tube, soon as water starts coming out put thumb back on, try to make sure you have enough water in the top such that there is still a little bit left in top after fillling the tube with water and removing air now keep thumb on and put top part back in water hold under on a slant so that it fills with water and air get pushed out top leave top under water, and now take thumb off water should move freely now
I am about to start an aquarium of my own. I went to Pet's Mart the other day to buy bird food for my cockatiel, and as I was there I stood and looked at all the prices of the tanks and supplies etc. Man, I wanna get one started again.
R2K - stumbled on this online fish site while checking some plant species out to make a order to fill the gap on the right behind the log and they have a nice range of rainbows, including Neon Rainbows and Red Rainbows and Bosemanis available if you can't find any in Houston... maybe http://www.fish2u.com/rainbows.html
Shop around before you buy an aquarium from petsmart, you can find a much better deal buying used. If you are in Houston try the chron.com classifieds under petr/fish.
shopping around and second hand tanks are both great ideas SSG - you see my tank pics a few pages back??
Just saw it, very nice, natural looking. Love the REAL plants and the loaches, cute lil guys. I've been wanting to get a shoal myself but unfortunately I'm at capacity in both my tanks.
WTF, my girlfriend just noticed two small fry in my fish tank. WTF? Where could they possibly have come from? My only explaination is that when I bought these other fish the pet store accidently scooped these fry up too. Will they keep in a fish bowl until the are big enough not to get sucked up in the filter?
Well I know where they come from but I don't have any livebearers in my tank so I was really asking if my explaination was feasible? What should I do to maximize the survival rate of these two lil' ones?
what kind did you end up with in your tank? danios and a pleco and what else? I suppose it is a possibility that some small fry may have been inadvertently included...I wouldnt think they would have lasted long in the bag with bigger fish...most fish will eat fry.
I only have danios and a pleco at the moment but I'm going to rid myself of the pleco I think, will pet stores take fish you don't want?
I was actually going to suggest you get rid of the pleco but didn't want to seem like a know-it-all fish owner. I think it's a good idea tho, most people think they need one to keep algae eaten and keep the tank clean however they soon realize that the plec may be the messiest fish in the tank. I believe you have a ten gl. tank and this is simply too small to accommodate a growing plec. Take him back, take him to a petsmart hand him to the kid working the fish section and tell him that you can't keep him. I would not want to do business with a shop that doesn't take returns. Working with a smaller aquarium you are limited with the number of fish you can have already and the most important thing is to not overstock your tank. As for the fry, maybe the Danio were pregos already before you bought them.
Geez, is this thread STILL going on? Get a tank, fill it with water, put a filter on, and drop the fish in!
I had assumed that one of the danios was pregnant when purchased plus the danio would have laid eggs and then those would have had to be fertilized, right? I've examined them and they look like mini-swordtails, still hard to tell though because the fry are still transparent and very very small.
got my order of plants delivered yesterday..... more pics when i get home tonight... the gap is filled
