    Also

given how much security the planet already had with the shield over everything and the fleet in orbit, they probably had the oldest and most raggedy of equipment. I mean, you even had a ton of ground troops and not much ground to guard. They would probably feel INCREDIBLY secure even with the worst ATAT's they had available so the best equipment probably went to "the front lines" or places where there was active rebellion.

For me that kind of made it more realistic because that kind of thing is what really happens.

It very much looks to me like they did not want to rely on nostalgic story lines but then in the editing room the story looked so bland that they decided to add these things later.

If you presented this script to a an agent they would smack you. GALACTIC war and the climax is stealing a USB stick from easily defeatable storm troopers.

And btw those calling it a war movie clearly have not seen any great war movies. Strip away the incredible futuristic visuals and this is the worst war story ever to screen in a big theater.

Also for info, it's not meant to be a warfare story, it's meant to be a western. And it didn't do that well either.

Finally saw the movie this weekend while I'm vacationing in Denver. I wasn't looking forward to seeing it but my kids kept harassing me to go with them, so I finally relented.

I only read the last two pages so I'm not sure if the majority liked the movie, I can only go by the little that I've read so far.

Sure enough, I'm not as impressed as some of you! Sure it answers some basics for me, but I could not get immersed into the movie. The only two things that I really liked were the Vader scenes, AND the blind IP Man scenes! The rest was just OK. I should've waited for the movie to get Redbox'd!!

In ESB all the rebels had were little scout speeder things. In RO they were full on fighter spaceships. I assume they would have stronger weaponry. That was my initial thought, at least.

I know this is my opinion, but the reality is the whole Star Wars series is just not that great in the grand scheme of things. I fully understand and respect the late 70's and early 80's nostalgia and it was a great piece of work back then. Its amusing to read the bickering about plot holes. Why was the ATAT walker destroyed so easily? Maybe because it was a terrible design and wouldn't be practical on our Earth in the 20th century, much less in an age of Star Wars.

I personally love Dune. Its too bad they could never translate it to the screen properly.

Oh no. That was a massive Rebel fighter base as well as anti-spaceship artillery defenses. That's why the empire was attacking it, no? You'll have to watch that scene again. Luke is definitely in a fighter (X-wing). That's where Solo kisses Leia too right, so the millennium falcon was stationed there, too.

I binged rewatched all 6 prior to TFA

During the actual battle the pilots were flying modified air speeders, not X-Wings. The argument could be made that their laser cannons didn't have the punch that space superiority fighters would have.

Still that doesn't explain the gun towers having no effect.

The X-Wings didn't appear until it was time to bail the planet Hoth.

I don't know the terminology that well (had to look up AT Walker), so I was trying to make a distinction between ground skimming"bikes" the scouts used that I assumed Rimbaud was calling "scout speeders". Luke's definitely in a flying wing "jets"/fighter that they launched specifically to take out the WAlkers. It wasn't a sneak attack where they came upon scouts in weak planes

If you say not an X-Wing I believe you as well as if you say those fighters they launched to take out the Walkers were woefully ill-equipped compared to the X-WIngs that they could have used

Are you saying X-Wings weren't even stationed there?

Here's the craft from the Battle of Hoth.

No, the X-Wings are definitely there. We only see glimpses of them in Echo Base, and as Luke and the others are leaving Hoth.

Why they weren't used in the battle, dunno. Only thing I can think of is that they didn't want to risk losing the hyperspace capable craft in air support against the AT-AT walkers.

EDIT: forgot that X-Wings were also escorting transports escaping Hoth.

I know people have issues with the movie, but what do you think about the tone?

Personally, I loved the tone. I like it that the movie is darker and more somber. In fact that's why I like it more than any of the others except empire strikes back. I wouldn't take my kids to see Rogue One... but that's precisely why I enjoy it so much.

I don't want Star Wars to be a fun adventure. I want it to be serious, intense, and dire.

Sorry I thought you were talking about those motorcycle thingies the scouts used when you "scout speeders". I was also assuming while watching Rogue that the Hoth fighters had same cannons the Scarif fighters did. Guess not. Thx

So those artillery cannons also weren't big enough, although I don't think the Walkers were being hit with the anti-spacecraft artillery batteries on Hoth

Here's the cannons that had no affect on the Walker front armor or legs

did they explain why we didn't have the star wars introductory rolling text to start the movie? was it because this wasn't a story about jedis?

Haven't seen an official org chart, but I think they both report to the Emporer; probably both the same pay grade.

The explanation Disney gave before they started these is that they wouldn't have the scrawl because it's not a "saga" movie, i.e. not of of the Episodes of the series....
