"Star Wars" Blu-ray Set Breaks Records

By Garth Franklin Friday September 23rd 2011 12:52PM

The fanboys may have gotten into a huge uproar over the further alterations made by George Lucas, but that didn't stop either them or mainstream audiences from grabbing the recent Blu-ray release of the entire "Star Wars" saga on Blu-ray.

According to a press release, Fox and Lucasfilm have raked in $84 million globally from the nine-disc box-set since its launch on September 16th - selling over a million units with just over half (515,000) sold within North America. This makes it the number one pre-order and 'catalog title' since the launch of the Blu-ray format in 2006.

Despite the grumbles over the changes made not just before this edition but for earlier versions, reviews for the set were strong with the transfers for the classic trilogy and the final prequel 'Revenge of the Sith' scoring good marks. The transfer for the first prequel 'The Phantom Menace' however scored numerous criticisms.

Somewhere right now, George Lucas is slipping on a gimp mask made out of pure baby seal skin and is pleasuring himself with your cash.

Author of the article's line, not mine....

    'Episode IV: A New Hope'

Digital rocks have been added, for some unexplained reason, in front of R2 while he's hiding in a cave. After R2 leaves the cave, those rocks aren't there anymore.

The underside of Luke's Speeder actually looks good.

Escape pod lid is now black instead of blue.

Death Star explosion has been color corrected and actually looks much better. It doesn't have the bright blue ring around it anymore.

'Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back'

A few scenes have undergone color correction. Cold bluish hues have been replaced with warmer ones. This is especially noticeable when Chewy is searching for the driods.

When Obi-Wan appears it's more visible this time around.

Hoth's snow looks less blue, and has taken on a whiter more natural look, which is a big improvement actually.

'Episode VI: Return of the Jedi'

Jabba's Palace door has been replaced with a much larger CGI one.

Han Solo's carbonite thawing is now CGI. This is one of the dumber changes. As it stands now, the thawing looks silly. Light surrounds Hans and shoots out from his face, hand, and body. It's almost as cheesy as an angel awaking from slumber.

A CGI Dug has been added to the steps of Jabba's Palace for no discernible reason at all.

The Ewoks do indeed have digital blinking eyes.

When R2 has his freakout, a whole load of gadgets have been added to the picture, more steam coming from inside, and the leaking has been digitally erased. Pretty poorly I might add.

I bought the Original trilogy blu rays, don't care for the new ones. I think a number of things Lucas has done are r****ded but overall it adds up to what less than a minute of actual screen time changes? It just doesn't bother me enough to pass on the best looking version of these films that I can get and 99% of what was the original film.

I'll draw the line when he replaces Luke with Taylor lautner.

I guess I was lucky since I never seen the old ones and watched them in order 1-6. I only knew a few things like who’s Luke’s father.

Lucas misfired on a lot with the prequels, but all in all I really enjoyed them. It's was impossible to live up to fan expectations. And Star Wars fans love to complain, about everything, it's all they do these days.

As for the Blu-Rays, they look great. I was concerned they originals might not stand the pressure of blu-ray quality picture, but they do. Most of the changes are inconsequential, so they don't bother me. Han shoots first and Vader doesn't scream no, those are the only truly bad changes.

You are not suppose to watch them in that order. That is not how they were written. If they were made in order than they would have been narratively much different. Plot elements in the first 3 were written with the understanding that the audience has seen episodes 4 5 and 6.

You would not reorder pulp fiction chronologically or 21 grams or Momento. You did yourself a disservice my friend.

Im watching the documentaries right now. The prequels looked good, it's just that i can't get over how lame they are. I loved them when they came out, but they did not hold up through time. The writing, the directing, acting. It's all awful. Even EpIII is ruined by it for me. I watch movies now a days and see so much potential for a proper telling of Anakin's fall to the dark side and the clone wars....it saddens me. I pray Lucas lets others reboot the prequels.

On to the SE OT, doesn't look so impressive to me as far as picture quality when i saw a friend watching A New Hope.

I got the originals, the ones without Jar Jar.

Me likes the DTS-HD surround sound.
