I'm not quite a fan of Star Trek actually, haven't checked out the trailer yet.Gon go check it out to see what they've got. Hope it's gon' turn out fabulous.
Okay, that was funny. (I'm probably one of the few to understand this pic. Then again, this is an INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD, so...)
I think part of the idea of this movie was to make it more for non-Trekkies than Trekkies. I'm sort of a semi-trekkie and while it looks entertaining there was a lot of stuff in the trailers that bothered me.
I thought Nemesis was a good movie. But I also thought that Generations and Insurrection (odd numbered) were good as well.
I actually think that is what is drawing me towards it. I hate that movies have to remain exactly on point. I like if a movie can pull off change, without raping the heritage. Somehow I keep getting the Galaxy Quest nerds stuck in my head thinking of how people refuse to allow anything to grow or change over the years.
My god, FB. I watched Tropic Thunder today for the first time on a friend's new HDTV, and there was a moment in the flick when Jack Black looked, sounded, and acted just like Bill Shatner as James Tiberius Kirk. I'll be damned. I even commented on it at the time! Great minds...
There's a big difference between fans who get upset when the writers try to change the direction of a show or movie series and fans who get upset when someone decides to make a prequel movie forty years after the show and makes major alterations to the time line.
As a nerd I resemble that remark! (I got the Darmok reference but at least I couldn't name the episode.)
This movie is a whole new animal. Star Trek 2 through VI were all sequel movies, as were First Contact through Nemesis. And every Star Trek movie ever made has used actors that had already established themselves in their characters. This new movie faces a HUGE challenge: introduce all new actors to portray characters that we've already known and loved through decades of TV shows and movies. It will not be a sequel to another movie or even to a TV show. One might think it's a prequel to the original Star Trek tv show, but from what I've heard, even that's not the case. It's very much a wipe-the-slate-clean movie, which means it has a lot of freedoms that most (if not all) other Star Trek movies have had. I'm looking forward to seeing what they've done in the new movie.
The only Trek that kept the original formula was Voyager. Next Generation was diversity training in space and Deep Space Nine was a political/war drama.
the trailer looked really good. i never watched too many of the tv shows but i have seen most of the movies back when i was in high school. i honestly forgot most of the movies. actually in the process of downloading them all in 720p to watch...probably will take me 3 weeks to download but worth it. apparently scifi-HD had a marathon of all the movies.
I've never gone to a Star Trek movie and have watched maybe 3 episodes in my life...maybe it was Voyager. I'm definitely going to see this movie. There are a lot of people in the same boat as me. I think for this movie to really be successful, it's going to have to draw enough people like me without alienating too many regular Star Trek fans. I can see how it could be really weird to see this movie if you're a regular fan and it just totally abandons the storyline.
