i went to Wrigely and was completely underwhelmed? energy??? hardly. my buddy from colorado went with me...he's not a houston sports guy at all. he commented on how disengaged cubs fans were throughout the game...and how much more into the game they are in houston. wrigley, from what i saw, is a yuppie hotspot. it stops there. i walked away disappointed.
not too bad. anyone been to mm and see someone hit a hr off the "glass" when the roof is closed? I saw A. Jones do it for Atl, a monster shot.
I'm no expert on ballpark ranking (who is, really, it's all subjective), but I fail to see how putting a stadium on the water makes it better. Yeah, I understand view and location is important - and even previously mentioned how the view at Coors is unbelievable... ...BUT, we're talking about Cincinnati here. It's on the Ohio River...whoop-te-do?? Maybe the Stros should have built MMP on the Ship Channel?
It's wonderful. When you consider what we could have ended up with (there's no telling... it easily could have been a ****-up), I couldn't be happier. Well, if I lived in town to be able to see more games, that'd make me happier, lol!
eh...kind of boring. It does have a solid view of the arch, though For comparison sake: Yes, MMP may be a little too gimmicky, BUT, it certainly is different/unique, and, when all is said and done, those gimmicks really haven't played that big a role in the ACTUAL baseball being played.
They could have built it on bufflo bayo, its only a few yards from there anyway. and they are supposed to be developing the area along the bayou with walkways and such, maybe that isn't such a bad idea. I have to agree, on television I don't care that's its the ohio r, it looks nice. but that goes back to your point, how are they judged. I probably will never visit over half the mlb parks. so my judgement is strictly from the boob tube.
I agree...standing there is sweet. I was at the game during Griffey's first year with the Reds. I was talking crap to him from up there and he turned around and told me to kiss his black ass. So my language had to get dirty after that. Freakin awesome.
"h-town texas home of drop-top arenas" ESG: the only thing mmp has on it from what I see are the arches. I guess if you like choo choos then there's always that. "houston, all systems go" wooooooooooooooo
I'm still trying to think of who it was, but one game, a reliever came out of the visitors Bullpen during BP and told someone who was heckling, "Shut your mouth, DIRTCORK!" We laughed so hard at that. For five dollard, you just don't get entertained like that anywhere else. Plus, we got to see some baseball!
Yeah, for some reason building it on a dirty bayou where occasionally dead bodies will pop up doesn't seem all that special to me. I imagine the Ohio River is the same way, but for some reason people get a boner if a ballpark is built anywhere close to water?
One thing I love about MMP is that when the roof is open, it feels like it's an outdoor stadium instead of an indoor stadium with a retractable roof. That's one thing they really got right, unlike Reliant Stadium. Actually, I have no complaints whatsoever about MMP. All the seats are good, tickets are pretty cheap compared to Texans/Rocket tickets, and the parking is simple and cheap compared to other ballparks. Oh yeah, and the Astros are the only team in town that actually wins more games than they lose...
you're being ridiculous now. I'm sure if they built mmp on buffalo bayou they would clean it up. that's why I wrote about it being in conjuction with planned devlopment which has already begun in some parts of downtown. I'm sure when they are building the walkways they take a little to clean up the dead bodies.
totally agree, I don't know if because of size, there were constraints on building the roof at realiant in that manner, but realiant doesn't feel like an outdoor stadium when the roof is open.
There's actually a new and cool looking building in the view now. I love MMP, everytime I walk into it I'm in awe. I love to look down on the field as I walk to my seats and look around at the crowd. I can't wait to go to MMP this summer.
Agreed. I've been to 2 games this season already (family season tickets), and my first thought on the first game was, "Yep, this place is as sweet as ever."
You're right. I am exaggerating a bit. Just trying to point out that, imo, places like MMP are in no way better/worse off for being built close to rivers. Especially if their location is still advantageous (i.e. - where MMP is, as compared to if they built it by the Astrodome). PacBell is one thing, the Ohio River and what could have been on the Buffalo Bayou - totally different.
I attended MMP a week ago for the first time when the roof was open and I was pleasantly surprised. It really DID feel like an open ballpark. I was highly skeptical of the place when it was built because the dome has always held a special place in my heart (piss-troughs and all) and I thought this new joint was small and stupid with its choo-choo train. Well, I was wrong. MMP is actually pretty great. I don't expect people who couldn't care less about the Astros to like it, because why should they? It's not like I give a crap about this boring monolith known as Busch. I mean, rain delays? C'mon, it's 2006 for God's sake!
Thanks goodness for this thread, now I know who to put on my ignore list. MMP is a great stadium to see a game. It has the quirks of the old school stadiums and not many seats are bad for viewing the game. I have had friends come from Boston, New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, and LA. They all have loved MMP. It is a great place to watch a game, a great scoreboard that has all kinds of stats for the game and players, a great sound system. Not sure what is not to like. Not sure what is going on with the hate, but I guess if there is a thread, there had to be trolls ready to move in.
