That should be douchebaggery, but you knew what I meant. BTW, I find most of your your posts funny, you just go a little to far on occasion.

Oh haha sorry I read it too literally.

ya I do push it to the limits sometimes...bad habit I suppose.

if it comes down to those two schools I would pick St Johns, Kinkaid gets a bit of a bad wrap from us Private Schoolers.

In terms of academics, it is definitely St. John's, it's pretty clear. Even the students that finish near the bottom of classes there end up going to top 50 colleges. tons of kids also get into Ivy League schools form there, you could probably ask their admissions office for the numbers, I bet it is very high. the only knock I have on them is that they accept any minority no matter what. Kinkaid is a good school, but definitely is not looked upon in the same regard. For extra extracurriculars, I really only know for certain about sports. I graduated from another high school in the same conference in 08 and at the time, St. Johns was better at sports, but it goes back and forth all the time, no clear cut winner. In retrospect, I regret not going to St John's. I went to probably the best/most challenging middle school in Houston and wanted an easier high school, poor decision in the end.

I graduated from Kinkaid recently and it's safe to say that everyone who graduated from my class went to a great University(Except for the two or three kids who went to ACC to take the easy route into Texas). Both schools are great. St. Johns are a little bit better academically but Kinkaid has great Fine arts programs and better sports(There football team won SPC this past year). It's a win win situation for both schools. except for your wallet of course haha

I graduated from SJS in '92 - before much of the new construction (the Fine Arts program has really picked up since then... it was sorely lacking before). Back then, it was regarded as a stronger academic school than Kinkaid, and I believe that still holds true today. Although, broadly speaking, Kinkaid had stronger athletics, I still remember our track team roasting them on a pretty regular basis.

I believe only 1 person from my graduating class didn't go on to a 4-year college (not to say that absolutely everyone finished on schedule), and many went on to Ivy League schools, Rice, or some of the other high-caliber schools. UT was generally regarded as a "safety school" - a bit hard to believe now, but I think that was because back then, if you got either an 1100 or 1200 on the SATs you were automatically accepted.

    Awty, represent!

I had gone to Awty and my kids go to Awty, but if things don't work out there, I'll consider St Johns and Kinkaid as back-up schools. My impression, which is wholly based on gossip is this:

St Johns is the best school academically. I see Kinkaid as the Princeton of Houston private schools -- handing out prestigious degrees to rich kids who don't do the real work. From my basketball days in school, I remember Kinkaid kids standing out as being the most pretentious. And there were rumors of bad drug problems there. Of course that was years and years ago.

I've been told more recently that St Johns is a heavy legacy school, filling their slots with alumni kids first before opening it up to others. That doesn't sit too well with me, but they do still perform academically regardless.

Sports-wise, when I went to Awty our soccer team was killing both of those schools every year (and everyone else in Texas). Of course, that was our only successful extracurricular program.

That's gross. You might as well go to public school before going to that ghetto.

thanks to all for the input.

for the guy that likened kinkaid to princeton - just be aware that princeton is actually regarded as the best undergraduate university in the country. it loses out in rankings b/c of graduate programs.

Stanford is the school that hands out degrees. Hell, you can drop a class after you take a final.

I didn't go to Awty but other family members did. :(
I ended up at a private Baptist school after convincing my mum not to put me in Strake(Bad decision I regret now).

Sporstwise-Awty is always a soccer beast, back when I was in school, Stu Holden was a young un on their team and they beat my team. I hated him with a passion until later.

when was Awty a soccer beast? we beat their Varsity team when I was still on JV...

I must drop some Crusader love since I have seen its name dragged through the mud a bit here. Haven't had a chance to check out all of the new developments there, but my understanding is that it now resembles more of a college campus than that of a high school...looks like I missed out on the goods...
the Stache made a good point when he said Strake and STH put an emphasis on service and brotherhood. I fought like hell not go there but can't imagine how I would be if I hadn't. Liberal Arts education might not seem very worthwhile in the real world, but I think it gave me a much broader perspective of life in general...Great experience...

just send them to an all white public school like stratford or memorial. the social skills they will get in public schools will be worth a lot more.

Yes, because there is no social interaction at private schools. Do you think they lock the students in isolated rooms and just make them do homework?

I graduated in '93 and they were dominant pretty much through my high school tenure and I think a couple seasons thereafter. They had a couple of undefeated seasons. I tried to find the records online without luck. The building has some big signs up still celebrating those seasons. Looks like we're not too good now.

Worth more? So, if we compare incomes of the SJS kids to those of the Stratford kids 20 years after graduation, we'll see the Stratford kids come out ahead?

Yo, Strake grad here. I actually graduated quite recently, and I gotta say, the campus was pretty nice. It resembles a college campus in the way it's wide open and spread out, and there were a lot of places for students to lounge around during their off periods. And the whole brotherhood and service aspect of it really leaves a lasting impression, even though I wasn't totally buying it at first.

It definitely was a good experience in terms of life, maturation and all that mess. But academically, I think there are still a few departments that need tweaking. Don't get me wrong, a great majority of kids that graduate are all intelligent and get into good colleges, but the faculty was kinda ehhhh in some aspects. Looking back though, I think I'll really miss that place.

    its HS.

    who gives?

send them to a public school (decent, of course), save some money, and keep a close eye.

sending them to one of these private schools is not a bad investment. Going to either, but sjs in particular almost guarantees you a spot at a top tier college along with far more college preparation than any public school will give you.
