What about Jack McClinton (#51 pick in the draft)?

Bogans fits the Spurs perfectly. He was a solid player with the Rockets 05-06... It's just too bad he had to play with us when both Tmac and Yao were mostly injured, otherwise he probably would've stuck with us.

Going through the JVG school of defense is a big reason he's such a good defensive player now.

Great fit for the Spurs. I have a feeling Spurs' fans are going to realize just how much Bowen relied on the system there once they see "no-name" NBA players come in and give the same/better production than Bowen gave.

Bogans was a good defensive player in JVG's system. He will be a good defensive player in Pop's system.

My biggest impression of his game as a Rocket was that he couldn't shoot. I guess the difference between him and Bowen is that Bowen could hit the open 3.

On paper the numbers may end up looking the same but we both know that Bogans won't be able to match Bowen's basketball IQ and one-on-one defensive ability. With Bowen it was never about the production or numbers. For that reason, I think it's a stretch to call Bowen a "system player".

I'm sure Bogans will never be able to run through screens or play the non-stop level of defense Bowen did. The other side of that coin is that Bogans is a stronger, more athletic player who does more than shoot spot up 3s (from the corner only) on offense.

The reason Bowen lasted in San Antonio and got enough minutes to be recognized as a great defensive player is because of the system there. You basically had a 3 headed monster in a Ginbobli/Parker/Duncan with vets like Horry and Finley off the bench. All that team needed was a guy who played defense. Tell me how many other teams could afford to give minutes to a SG/SF who hit free throws at 57% and only averaged 6 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist in nearly 30 minutes per game?

There's a reason the guy didn't find a home in the NBA until he was almost 30.

Disagreed that Bogans is an offensive upgrade to Bowen. I have seen Bogans play a fair amount plus the numbers back this up completely -- all he does is spot-up for three's. That's not exactly ideal when you've never even eclipsed the 40% mark for an entire season. Sure, he's probably more athletic than Bowen but what good will that do if you can't create your own shot, take anybody off the dribble or get to the line?

We're on opposite sides of the world on Bowen here. Every role player is a "system player" in some capacity. Hence the very meaning the term role. Where we differ is you seem to devalue Bowen for some reason. Every championship team has championship level role players -- find a list, we'll point them out. So why is what Bowen did any less significant than, say, the James Posey/Derek Fisher types? I could make the argument that Fisher and Posey were "system players" on their respective championship teams. So where does that leave us? And to answer your question -- present San Antonio, Orlando, Cleveland, Portland, New Orleans and pre-Artest LA Lakers are all examples of good teams that would start a younger/effective version of Bowen right now.

Lastly, I think it's kind of ironic that you're pointing out Bowen's long path to NBA success while heralding a guy that's been on five teams in six years as his replacement. Don't get me wrong, I see your point but Bogans played for probably the biggest program in college basketball while Bowen went undrafted out of Cal-State Fullerton. I think its safe to say that Bogans had a much better opportunity to get noticed than Bowen did.

I remember this guy for being massively hated on by every Rocket fan for not being able to hit shots, or layups for that matter when he played here. I also recall a game where he shot in single digit percentages from the floor.

speaking of Spurs Jack McClinton asked for his release today :(

The San Antonio Spurs' 2009 second round draft choice, Jack McClinton, has reportedly asked to be released. In a tweet Wednesday night directed at Minnesota Timberwolves' rookie guard, Jonny Flynn, McClinton responded when asked if his training camp would be in San Antonio, "na i asked them to release me bro, im tryna get in wit somebody else it just wasnt working out over there."

but they added baylor star curtis jerrells to replace possibly on the d league roster i wondered what happened he seemed to love san antonio i guess the spurs told him he would be in the d-league this season and he thought he was nba material which he is not if played the way he did in summer league o well anyone looking for a streaky shooter heres your guy

That sucks. McClinton could be a nice fit there, though I know it'd be hard for him to get minutes the first couple of years. But I definitely could have seen him thriving with the Spurs.

He was basically a spot shooter under JVG, and I can only imagine he'll be able to get out in transition a bit more in S.A, though not much more. He's basically a Spur because of his defense and he's a gritty perimeter player. They already have plenty of people who can knock down shots and score.
