So lets see...the Spurs will have cap space,
but that means they will not improve the team, eh?

    Brilliant.

For SA's purposes, they can add a Corie
Blount for the minimum and be fine. Philly
had more size off the bench and look what
good it did them versus LA.

The Spurs main issue is adding some players
to the perimeter. That will be taken care
    of this summer.

As for DA, if the injury was so bad, why'd
he return at all? You say he won't be
100% after it, yet if this was such a dire
injury, why'd he even make the attempt if
his career was in the balance?

So so far, your evidence that the Spurs are
in dire straits this offseason is that they
need to find a small forward and a backup
center. Oh no. They must be the only team
in the NBA that has needs to address this
offseason. And the only one prohibited from
    using their cap space.

    Azim,

Miller would be nice, but I don't see
SA and Orlando making a deal. For some
    reason, there's animosity left over
    from the Duncan-recruiting deal.

Rose serves as the Spurs energy guy
    off the bench.

The guy I would love to see in SA is
    Charles Oakley. He'd be great.

Mo,can you back up what you just posted with links of actual quotes by the players?? If not, then don't post fallacies. The bottom line is that the Spurs are a better team than any other team in the league other than the Lakers. So obviously, the Spurs are better than whatever team that you follow(You are new to the board, I have no idea what team you follow), unless you have jumped on the Lakers Bandwagon [IMG]. Even if your favorite team is my beloved Houston Rockets, I am embarrassed at you putting down the Spurs, when our team isn't near as good as them. The Spurs were the first seed in the West, they won 58 games, the most in the league. They made the West Finals, true they showed no heart at all against the Lakers, but they were there. The Rockets weren't, in fact we weren't even in the playoffs. Hopefully, we get there next year, and we should. But until your team is better than the Spurs, will you PLEASE, just stop.

This is seeing "clearly"? Saying that the Spurs are a lottery team?. You stated that Tony Parker was Avery Johnson Jr.? Have you ever seen the kid play? If not, don't post fallacies you can't back up. Tony Parker is an excellent playmaker with good shooting ability. I know of no fan of a team that dogs on their team like you have, so IMO you aren't a true Spurs fan. Being unbiased is one thing, but this was not being unbiased, this was just immature and false bashing of a team, because of a draft pick that you knew nothing about. This post was not "seeing clearly", it was very sophmoric an false. DRob is a very soft player, but averaging 15 and 8 in the West isn't being a "girl". When did DA state that he wanted the max?

Your posts are very premature, impudent, and immature, let alone false.

    I'm a Heat fan...
    Now what?

    I'm a Comets fan...
    Now what?

    I'm a WillowRidge Eagle fan...
    Who cares?

    First off LITTLE,
For you to read a post in a thread about a team that you don't even follow and get upset about it is beyond me. Now you know that i know that the Spurs are not a lottery team next year, but again you read posts and look to play cool head in a conversation between 2 people which didn't even include YOU!!

Like i said before i'm a basketball fan, and for people to believe in coaches and management without question is wild to me. Just because a person is in a position of power does not mean that they are right all the time or even know what they are doing.

I have seen stats on him, and it doesn't matter if he's a GREAT player. If he can't play 3-5, the Spurs don't NEED him. Wanting him is different, but you would not pick Iverson to play 3 on your team would you? I don't care if he's 5'11" or 6' or 6'4", if he's not 6'8" he really doesn't help the team.

You must be a stat guy. You are a person that believes that if your stats are good on paper, that you are a good player. Okay stat man follow this:

1)The Spurs have 5 guards that actually play of course they have more, but wo cares...
    Avery Johnson PG
    Terry Porter PG
    Antonio Daniels PG
    Steve Kerr SG
    Derek Anderson SG
Now AJ may be gone, but if he stays he is really not a factor against a zone. Terry Porter is a good shooter with experience, but he is old and willing to be a back up. Antonio Daniels for some reason can't get a starting job at the point or the shooting. They bring in a SG last year and cut he's minutes, and now they bring in a PG and say that you may lose even more minutes. Steve Kerr is one of, if not the best 3pt shooter in the history of the NBA (look at the stats), but he can't get any playing time on a team of 3pt shooters. Cut'em i beat the Lakers find room for him. And DA who is the kind of SG they need for the future, but now they are saying he will split time with AD or maybe even play the 3. Now you bring in a point guard and do what play him at the 3...no, play him at the 2...no, cause you have DA, so you play him at the 1, and tell AD that you are not the point of the future and instead of solving the minute and primeter guard problem we add...another small point!! Thus Avery Johson Jr.

I'm assuming this guy is gonna start or if you talk to the Duke Blue Devil from last year that got cut, but is still getting a Spur paycheck...he may not even make the team. Now they drafted 2 players last year that could have played 3, but one got cut (Chris C.) and one was traded to LA.

Well Sir Little what else do you want to talk about? Because regardless of what you have to say...the Spurs still don't have a starting 3, big guard, or back up post players. And now they don't have enough cap to so anything about it.

    ...Buster

"Tony Parker was said to be the best PG prospect in the draft. his potential is equal to that of Griffin i believe. "

-LMFAO!!!!!!!!...Griffin was thought by most to be a top 3 or at worst top 5 pick. Parker was projected as a late first rounder and Jamal Tinsley is by far the best PG in the draft. Where do you get that Parker's potential is equal to Griffin? That's a load of crap. Are you a spurs fan? Must be to say something silly like that

"Their collapse vs LA was mostly mental, and i'm sure they will provide the biggest threat to the Lakers reign next year"

-Oh please. You indeed have to be a delusional Spurs fan. They were beaten like B%$$#@ by LA. They didn't just lose, they were absolutely humiliated and showed that they still deserve the soft label that has been on them for years now.

"The bottom line is that the Spurs are still the best team in the league other than the Lakers if they retain the Admiral and DA. We can't dis the Spurs, if they are a much better team than we are. "

-I disagree LilStevie. I know the Spurs had 58 wins, but out of all the teams LA faced in the playoffs, the Spurs provided the LEAST resistance, and it wasn't even close. Philly is clearly the 2nd best team in the NBA to me. They played LA tough. And now that the Kings have traded for Bibby, I think they are ranked #2 in the west if they keep webber.

"This is the #28 pick. The Spurs manage to
pick up a highly regarded point guard
prospect, one which is regarded as the
best in the draft at #28..."

-I agree that Parker was a good pick by SA. But where do you get that he was the best prospect in the draft at PG? That's news to me.

"The Spurs will have plenty of cap space
left over AFTER DA and DRob re-sign. "

-Now, you are really dreaming and being a homer SA fan. DA according to most wants in excess of $8 MIL per year. I'm sure Robinson wants to be paid in that range as well. Don't forget that Parker was a first rounder, so he gets a guaranteed contract that counts against the cap (at least $1 mil i believe). Also, Ferry is a FA and AJ. The Spurs are not going to be big players in FA, they will just be trying to keep their own, just like the Rockets will even though Houston has a ton of cap $$ on paper as well.

"Not the only ones. I guess better to watch
your team in the playoffs than otherwise."

-Not if my team is going to lie down and roll over like a bunch of sorry punks. SA fans love to talk about how classy and benevolent their Spurs are, but when push came to shove, that team flat out QUIT in the WCF. THAT is what is truly embarassing.

-Also, the Rockets are not as good as the Spurs yet, but our window of opportunity is just beginning to open up. Our key players are young and have heart. The Spurs, aside from Tim Duncan, are one of the oldest teams in the league and their window closed shut last year IMO. They are now in the declining stage.

Porter: 40 years old, he's done
    Elliott: Will probably retire
Ferry: Poor man's Matt Bullard, 35 years old
David Robinson: 35 years old, afraid of Shaq
Avery Johnson: still can't shoot, old as dirt

Duncan is young and an unbelievable player. DA is solid if his shoulder recovers. Aside from that, the Spurs are just too old and unathletic. If they get Payton somehow, they could MAYbe hang with LA. I'd much rather be a Rockets fan than an SA fan right now, no offense: Our future is bright, and the Spurs future could easily shatter to pieces in 2 years if Duncan bolts, which I think he will to the East (Orlando).

Bout time someone sees this team for what it is...very unstable. You can count on not seeing the Spurs win 58 games next season. 48 at best and Walker will come back to haunt the Spurs. You don't just cut a post player, and get nothing for him. Back ups are hard to find as it is, hell look at Houston, LA, New York, Miami, Seattle, Utah, and other teams in the league...he will be picked up by the end of July. Mark my word now about SA so during the off-season when no one goes to SA you will know the truth. Walker only managed 5pts. avg as a Spur, but did he get the shots or playing time to improve? This man couldn't get playing time in the playoffs when the Spur's posts were in foul trouble. Rose did and he was back from injury...i would have ASKED to get cut, because the Spurs do not respect anyone but Dave and Tim. The hometown fav AJ basically got slapped when they picked Parker. And poor AD just can't get out of the dog house.
Let's see what secret moves the Spurs are going to pull off in the next months...

Once again, some people let their dislike for the Spurs cloud their judgement.

Samaki Walker was placed on waivers yesterday. That will save another $2.65 mil in cap space as he had a buyout option on his remaining year at $3.3 mil for $650K.

Yes, $22 million before they re-sign DA and DRob.

Who is going to pay DA more than $7 mil (starting) a season?

As for Robinson, all he would be doing is
    essentially agreeing to deferred
compensation. That's it. The Spurs have
    his Bird Rights.

Say he takes even $4 million next season,
then $10 million the season after that...if
DA signs a deal starting at $7 mil, then that is $11 mil combined for this upcoming
    season.

Thus, they would take up $11 mil out of $22
mil in cap space. I know you want it to be
wrong, but it isn't. The #28 pick's contract
    is ~$560K. So that's $11.5 out of $22
million in cap space. If DRob decides to
take the minimum $1 million this season,
then re-signing DA, DRob, and signing the
    pick takes $8.5 mil.

And for the last time, AJ is not returning.

This is hilarious. I read yet again that the Spurs cannot get younger and athletic through free agency. They signed DA last summer, does that count?

This is the first summer in quite a while that they have this level of cap space. You seem to have forgotten that in your analysis of the history of the Spurs free agent signings.

Yes, Parker was regarded by a number of scouts as the best PG prospect in the draft. I know I read it on ESPN.com and FOXSports.com.

Now they're "unstable"? Just as unstable
as any other team with this level of cap
    space, I suppose.

The core will most likely return: Duncan,
Robinson, DA, and AD. Then add to that acquisitions totalling between $11 to $14 million.

Let's see, they have DA and AD returning,
so that will take care of the guard spots,
so then basically they need a starting 3 and
    a backup PF/C...and they have $11 to 14 mil
in cap space to address that.

But no, the Spurs situation must be dire
because you want it to be dire, no? I
haven't denied that they must improve, but
damn, some of you guys need to open your eyes
    just a tad.

Good luck trying to talk rationally about the Spurs on a Rocket board. You may as well try to defend the Jazz.

Only on a Rockets board, would the team with the best record in the NBA last year now suddenly be in "serious trouble" this year.

That old David Robinson is on his last leg. Never mind that he was an All-Star last year. Irrelevant here on the Rockets board.

Suddenly they have this glaring weakness at the small forward spot. Can someone tell me who they lost this past season that accounts for that "weakness". Sean Elliott wasn't a factor last year. Derek Anderson was absent against LA.

The team with the best record and defense in the league is suddenly going to be killed by the zone defense, at least according to this board. Never mind the fact that their defense will be even better next year, with the twin towers being able to do whatever they want on that end. Oh, but watch out for those "larger guards". [IMG]

They had the best record in the league last year. Did I mention that already? Their best player is still getting better.

They lose to the Lakers without their best perimeter player and 2nd-highest scorer, and now suddenly the team is in shambles. At least that's how it is here on the Rockets board.

Freak--about the whole "Spurs will suck against a zone defense" thing: don't forget that they had the best 3-pt shooting in the league. Ferry, Porter, Anderson, and Daniels ALL shot over 40%. To put that in perspective, only about 15-20 players in the entire LEAGUE shot that well from 3-pt land. Going against a zone (which, btw, many teams unofficially played against the Spurs last year) will just give these guys more open looks. With Duncan and Robinson down low, the zone will sag away from the perimeter. The Spurs can just whip it around the perimeter for the open shot on the weak side. That's how you beat a zone; and the Spurs--while they still need to get more athletic--have the personnel to beat the zone defense.

Like others have said, we Rockets fans should be somewhat ashamed at ourselves. We always complain that the Rockets get no respect from the media and the rest of the league, but we are so quick to jump on the Spurs when they have one terrible series against a great team on a dominant playoff run. I think most of us on this BBS are knowledgeable basketball fans. So let's show the other people that visit this BBS that Rockets fans can be OBJECTIVE as well.

P.S. The Rockets will go 82-0 next season
    ;-)

After the p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c performance the Spurs gave in the playoffs there *should* be a lot of doubt about the Spurs future. The abberation for David Robinson and the Spurs was the '99 championship. If you challenge him he will fold. And for Duncan to let Robert Horry shut him down? That is weak. Other than Duncan and Anderson the Spurs are either old, slow, or undertalented. No one will remember 58 regular season wins, but it is hard to forget the way that team laid down for the Lakers. Go whine about injuries to the 76'ers.

...at least that's how it is here on the Rockets board.
...the Rockets aren't my favorite team, but I don't let my apathy cloud my judgement.

The heck is this? Most of the Rocket regulars here have pointed out the Spurs' strength, and they were getting plenty of support as the playoffs were getting into full swing. Some folks (like Azim and Francis) are even being downright supportive in this thread!

Here, I have a broad, generalizing statement for you: Spurs fans are often the problem for guys like verse [IMG], not the Spurs themselves. I've respected the Spurs' game and was even hoping they would show the Lakers a thing or two. But the old song-and-dance of how Spurs fans think they're the class acts and saints of the NBA...well, that gets tiring, quick.

You would think that, for two teams that don't often get respect for their accomplishments, we'd have a lot more in common. I think the only Spurs fan I've ever met I could talk about the game reasonably with is my boss...and no, it's not because my job is in the balance. [IMG]

I'll even add a little analysis: There's not much reason to believe the Spurs won't be right back at the top again next year. Barring the loss of DA or Robinson (which ain't gonna happen) and any major injuries, they should be another favorite. What they pick up this offseason (and they will have the opportunity to make some moves) will be the difference.

and geez Freak, if you could look at this from Rockets fan's perspective, you would....oh, wait. You are a Rockets fan. Sorry, I forget sometimes. [IMG]

-Good point. I had a lot of respect for Duncan, but aside from the 1st half of Game 2, he was absolutely horrible against LA. You are right: Horry did totally shut down Duncan. He was forcing turnovers and swatting or changing Tim's shots.

Tim Duncan turned into TimID Duncan that series. I think Robinson's softness may be rubbing off on Timmy D.

My apologies to all whom I may offended.

I was referring to the select few who felt
that SA's starting lineup next season would
    be:

    1 Daniels
    2 Jaren Jackson
    3 Samaki Walker
    4 Duncan
    5 Robinson

and that the Spurs wouldn't have any cap space.

I like this board a lot and the site is
great. I don't hate the Rockets and don't
    mind watching them play.

Having moved to SA area from H-town area some 11 years ago, I've been able to keep up with both teams and the way they operate. The Rockets have always been willing to take a gamble and make big moves with trades and free agency and any other way they can to acquire BIG-TIME talent.
The Spurs, especially under the dictatorship of Pop,are very conservative most of the time. They pretty much have stuck to acquiring role players at best with their trades and free agent signings. They are not gamblers at all. Rodman pretty much drove them nuts and killed about all chances of them pursuing guys of "questionable character". Right or wrong, they're HUGE on character. Sometimes it seems they consider character before talent regardless of how small the character question is. For example, given the Rockets' Griffin trade opportunity, it wouldn't have been surprising for them to pass on Eddie or even Stevie Franchise because of their "questionable character". Alot of that IMO stems from the usually financial insecurity of the team's various ownerships. They literally can't afford to make mistakes.
Also, Pop seems to be quite arrogant at times and reluctant to copy patterns that work for other teams, as though somehow it would reflect poorly on his manhood or something. As an example of carrying this to an extreme--he used to criticize teams who stashed players/prospects on IR with questionable injuries and refused to stoop to this level. Now he routinely carries the 15 maximum allowed.
The point is(yes there is one) the organization is trying to become an aggressive "playa" in the way they build a team. They certainly realize they need someone to keep Duncan here after DRob is done and the cap situation this year provides a great opportunity to do something.
There is a huge hole at the 3 and concern at 1 until if and when Parker pans out. Perhaps they could attract Allan Houston to play the 3. Failing to land a prominent 3, perhaps they could do H-town a favor and take the Wizard off the Rockets' hands(hey the guy can shoot and do more than Ferry). At least the Spurs are showing signs of aggressive management now.
Speaking of aggressiveness, or lack thereof, back to DRob(oooooooooh that was low)...at least he would consider a deal close to minimum to help the team ala Barkley. Dream's the best ever IMO but money's always been big for him. I really can't see him doing a Barkley and getting his bucks the following year.
The Spurs WILL win 50 plus again next year but here come the Rockets AGAIN!

Tony Parker was the best PG in the draft, far better than Tinsley. For anyone to say otherwise is ignorant or just havn't seen him play. He played in a professional league overseas and was one of the superstars (16pts and 6.5 ast). SA got lucky to get him. Tinsley isn't that good of a shooter and also has serious attitude problems. Another pro about Parker is his quickness.
As far as the zone effecting SA it's just not going to happen. The zone doesn't tend to work against a half court offense especially with two 7 footers in the paint. They can simply dish it out for an open 3.

My point exactly. Everyone is saying how the Spurs are in trouble. At least they have one of the top 3 players in the league TD and a good young athletic 2 guard in DA. They are contenders, we aren't. They could be contenders for a couple more years if they get younger and stay healthy. They have no heart, but they are contenders. They aren't a lottery team like Mo says. Mo comes on the board as a newcomer and acts very childishly calling me a "buster" and saying that he is a "spurs fan, now what?","heat fan, now what?", "comets fan, now what?", and says that I am "LITTLE", LOL!!!. I couldn't think of anything more childish. You said that you were "seeing clearly", and I quoted your immature and childish comments about the Spurs and Tony Parker, who you have never seen play. All of a sudden you retract your comments and call me a "buster" and say that I don't know anything about basketball. Absolutely hilarious.

To further the conversation on the Spurs, the reports are now saying that they are looking at Bruce Bowen (Heat), and Shandon Anderson (Rockets)...now do i have to say that they are once again looking for a role player to play a starting 3, and that NO ONE wants these players?

Now Elvis, Rokkit, Verse, Cato=Bum, and SA Rocket are people that i think are truly in tuned with truth about the Spurs. With everything all said and done, the facts still remain that they have to sign Big Dave and DA, secure a starting 3 and back up post, and hopefully gel before everyone else does.

Take the blue pill, and wake up from the computer dream world. I'm a fan of basketball, and knowing the truth for some means finally facing it...I'm TRUTH.
