I'm beginning to think the Spurs may be the 3rd best team in Texas next year unless they make a major move, soon. It's very possible that this will be their line-up next year:

C David Robinson - still good, but declining
PF Duncan - Top 5 player
    SF - Miscellaneous loser
    SG - Miscellaneous loser
PG - Tony Parker who might be a poor man's Steve Nash at best

    No bench.

If the Spurs can somehow resign Anderson, or nab Smith in return (who i think is better), they're still fine... but two good front court players does not an elite team make.

And the future is not bright: Robinson has 2-3 years of productive seasons left and Duncan very well might bolt if the Spurs look stagnant.

I was jealous of them two years ago... now I wouldn't trade places.

    Haven,
I think you hit the nail on the head, because it has not been good for the Spurs so far...

    Mr. Spur,
Take the bet, because i think the Spurs will win 60 games next season.

    Verse,
I will see you at the game!! Come pick me up before we go so we can go to the strip club...

    Dat's right, Dawg!!

Finally, I'm home. Okay Cat, I don't think they'll win more than 58...so I don't know what happens if they get 58, would that be a tie? Anyhow, I got $20, so if you want one ticket for 20 or 2 for 10 or whatever, just keep in mind I'm only putting up $20. I think it's going to be close, with a 50/50 chance from this point, but I just don't know how effective Steve Smith will be, who is now the real x-factor.

If they win 58 there is no winner or loser I think. By the way, 20 bucks for ticket(s) is fine by me. You're on! [IMG]

    Rocket River,

    1. they still have no point guard to speak of
    2. their two would have to fill the role DA did - shoot & create.
    3. they still have no backup post, other than malik rose (who true centers obliterate)
    4. they still have to sign their other free agents w/o crossing the luxury tax.

    OTHER FREE AGENTS:

    Derrick Dial
    Ira Newble
    Sean Elliott (gonna retire...watch)
    Danny Ferry
    Shawnelle Scott
    Draft picks (2nd rounders)

    **************************************************8

running TP or AD @ the one is a BIG MISTAKE IMO. TP will break down if you want 25 minutes over 82 games. AD is a 2 guard in a pg's body. same for D Dial. shawnelle can't buy any playing time from pockmarkovich. ferry is a poor man's bullard.

and they still have to contend with a collapsing defense in the post.

Actually, Antonio Daniels had a breakout year last year with the injuries they had at PG. I'd venture to say that if they keep Porter and Daniels, they are ok at the PG spot.

    HOOP-T,

i thought it was clear that antonio played his best when he played at the 2 spot.

the problem is that he's smallish for a 2, and if you're running an old TP and a rookie TP at the 1, i think you're asking for trouble.

Who did San Antonio draft? I assume they may be able to help. They will miss Avery Johnson, but Daniels and Porter will fill in nicely, along with Kerr in limited minutes. They are still in the running for Bruce Bowens. Steve Smith will be a nice fit with San Antonio, a pure shooter and scorer.

They are after Bowen @ Miami, but I agree totally they have dropped their team in the poop this year, unless they start getting some depth.

    Bowen alone won't do it.

Losing DA, Avery and Sean Elliott (and the way they did it) speaks volumes of where their collective heads are positioned.

Yep .... looking at the southend of a northbound train .... and it's dark in there!

It should be interesting to see how this bet turns out for you guys. However,it still may not settle what I think you're arguing about which is--will the Spurs be a better or worse team after this offseason's moves? In other words the Spurs of 00-01 against the Spurs of 01-02 right?

The problem I see is that even the 00-01 version might not have reached 58 this next year simply because of the improvement of other teams like the Mavs AND THE ROCKETS OF COURSE. That alone would/should knock off a handful of wins.

Assuming they acquire a 3 with some ability and fill out a "veteran's minimum" bench, I would fully expect them to surpass 50. But I think you guys betting on 59+ might should keep that Ticketmaster website on your favorites list. Not that the Spurs won't be in the upper crust, it's just that the competition should be better.

I would bet that the Spurs will do worse than last season, but there is no way I could buy tickets from here! And I sure as hell am NOT going to give you guys my credit card number, so what could I bet?

I think the competition levels out really. Yes, the Rockets and Mavs will be better, but the Suns should be much worse, and the Jazz will continue to regress. Overall, I think the competition will be pretty similar, and the Spurs would've won at least 60 last year had they come together more at the beginning of the season, when Duncan had been feeling the effects of major knee surgery.

I know some of you don't like the Spurs, and go for the more hyped teams such as the Lakers, Kings, etc., but the Spurs have not had a bad offseason. They've replaced DA with Smith and Bowen, and should be signing Stephen Jackson, Elliott, Ferry, and perhaps one more player for the minimum. It's not a great offseason by any stretch, but imho the team is better than the team they had at the end of last season. Will it show in the record, and against the Lakers? I think so. But that's what the bet is for. I'm not putting Ticketmaster on my favorites list just yet... [IMG]
