Anderson or Spree might bring more immediate help but theyre both well past their prime and their future shows no promise. Durability is also a big question for them. i say we investigate a more promising option. i think the guy we should really look into is jay williams. seriously why does no one give this guy a chance? He's a young, big, strong PG who knows what it takes to win. yes Jay is unproven but its definitely unfair to label him a bust because of a less than spectacular rookie season. hes got loads of talent and hes going to be a steal for someone in teh league.
By "eventually" do you mean this year? Next year we have a full MLE to work with, so yeah next year we can do better, but no need to give up adding another guard who can contribute this year. I certainly don't have a problem with Mo Evans, Buckner, Dermarr, Devin Brown, James Jones, instead of DA/Spree, etc, but those are about the most realistic younger guys you might be able to get for an LLE, so if your aims are higher than this I think you have to wait for next year. I do not expect DA or Spree to come in here, play 40 minutes, and put up 16, 18 PPG. I am not living in the past. But either guy could come in and give you some 25-28 MPG and give you 10-12 PPG and give you modest assists/rebounds per minute for a swingman as well. Skillwise at this stage in their careers, both IMO are comparable to Wesley and Sura. But to pick up a Sura/Wesley type player for the LLE (1.67 1 year or 3.5 mil 2 years) is a steal. We would then have one superstar swingman (Tmac), plus 5 good quality guards/swingmen. Assuming there is a good chance our aging backcourt sustains injury, having 5 solid but pretty much interchangable guards/swingmen is a good thing.
Jay W might give you a flat zero next year. We don't want to use a roster spot on such a player. Next year when we clear a lot of contracts it will be the time to consider flyers like this. If we are going younger, the swingmen I mentioned above are much better options than Williams. They address a more needed skill (big guard/Tmac back-up), and all are coming off decent years on other NBA squads.
