Because I roll my feet out when walking, I've had lots of ankle sprains. It all started 4 years ago, much like you did, Manny, playing basketball. I went up to swat a shot, came down awkward on my left ankle, slipped on some sweat, and BOOM! I was on the floor for a good half-hour in pain. I actually drove home, too (in obviously pain)... Within the next two weeks, I sprained my left ankle another 2 times. Once, I was in the clubhouse after going to the driving range, and I just sort of rolled my ankle standing still. (That was embarrassing.) The other time, my foot hit a crack in the uneven sidewalk. I went to the doctor to check out my foot, and thankfully, I hadn't stretched the tendon too badly. Therefore, surgery wasn't needed. He merely gave me a foot brace to wear and some exercises to do.

Flash forward to sophomore year. Somehow (I forget), I managed to sprain my right ankle (complete with mind-numbing pain and swelling). My left was already pretty weak, so now both feet were handicapped. I got myself a right ankle brace, but not before I sprained my right ankle yet another time.

Since then, though, I haven't had too many problems. Sure, I sprain an ankle ever now and then, but it doesn't really hurt anymore. I do get a little swelling, but my feet are fine. I think after a few times, your tendon becomes like putty or something. It really doesn't bother me anymore, because I've accepted the fact that, at some point, I will sprain my ankle again.

    Manny,

i have had several experience similar to yours the last one was probably 6 months ago, which after spending two months out with plantar fascitis i land on someones foot shooting a 3 (damn i hate guy that sneak under you while you shoot) . Prior to the Xray they thought it was broken, but alas it wasn't and the doc said it would be about a month before i coul run again. I was back on the bike in 3-4 days and running and shooting after 7 days and played 15 days after i injured, but damn it was hard work.

My biggest reccomendation is start walking as soon as you can, not ridiculously i spent probably 36 hours elevating and icing and once i could weight bare on it, i started walking as normall as possible, apparently the whole propreoception thing is great, then i went wobble board crazy, once i got back i spent the next few months shaving my ankles and taping (already did the other from near dislocation) but now i can be bothered anymoreand they are strong enough again.

B-Ball, Tennis, any lateral movement sports high tops always. When I say tighten my laces I had them pretty tight to begin with, but I wear them to my circulation limit now and unlace or loosen them between games. Soccer and Skateboarding (ankle destroyers for me) I have to wear low tops. Soccer in particular no touch even with 3/4 tops. Samba's are my favorites, so basically i'm lucky to still have ankles.

    It's such a b**** to scroll.
Wait a minute how did you figure out I was talking about a post with pictures...how do I know your even refering to my post? Why are their ankles? Is a twisted ankle the same as a sprained ankle? Do any of you have a weird Great Ankle that visits every Christmas? Why does Rasheed Wallace always get "High ankle sprains"?

Took the words right out of my mouth KC. I think I can enlighten you about that goofy reflex though. I have the same thing, but what the doctor told me is that once you sprain your ankles badly and often enough, the damage kind of kills the nerves around your ankle. The result of this is that you lose your normal ability to sense when your ankle is about to turn. By the time your body realizes what is happening, the only thing it can do is that weird stumble. From what I have heard, it takes time to recover the nerves or build new ones, but you can accelerate the process using a wobble board and doing things like balancing on one foot.

Wow thanks for the info, I had no idea there could be some nerve damage as well. Luckily (knock on wood) my ankles are in good shape right now (could I jinx myself more). You know i'm going to post a thread in about a week saying how I just tweaked my ankle. :D :(

I've sprained my right ankle 2 major times and many smaller times where the pain went away after a few days but it's gotten to the point where the doctor has said that if I sprain the ankle again, the ligament will most likely tear. If you have a major sprain on the same ankle more than once, make sure you wait until you notice no swelling whatsoever, and then make sure to wear an ankle brace. You will probably notice that when you run, your ankle is allready pointed inwards as mine now is making it 10 times easier to sprain again. Also by coming back without doing any sort of rehab or working on your balance, when you land from a jump, your ankle will allready be semi pointed inwards making it extreemly easy to sprain.
