    i've done it!

steven hunter for the TE. cut sura - this balances the roster by getting rid of a guard and adding a front court player.

JVG talked about needing a center so hayes can go back to being a PF. he also talked about needing a shot blocker for when deke comes out. hunter is one of the league leaders in blocks per minute. 1.4 blocks and 3.8 rebounds in ONLY 18 minutes, while shooting 60% from the field!

steven hunter is on a 4 year contract worth about $3M a year. phily would like to save some money, and they earn a TE which is good for a year.

    thoughts?

    Current Rotation:
    Yao Ming
    Tracy McGrady
    Shane Battier
    Luther Head
    Rafer Alston
    Bonzi Wells
    Juwan Howard
    Dikembe Mutombo
    Chuck Hayes
    John Lucas III

    Bench:
    Kirk Snyder
    Vassilis Spanoulis
    Steve Novak
    Scott Padgett

    Payroll:
    Bobby Sura
    TE

Memo: In the playoffs, you want an 8-9 man rotation. But just for fun, let's assume a 10 man rotation. Add Snyder to the current rotation and you've got an 11 man rotation. Add ANOTHER player via trade for someone not playing right now and you've got a 12 man rotation!

I'm not going to argue whether or not any particular player should or should not be traded, but c'mon guys, let's be realistic. You can't just keep adding guys and piling them on top of each other. Sometimes addition by subtraction is what you need. If you can consolidate a couple of middle-tier players for an above average player, or even a couple of lower-tier players for a middle-tier player, then you've made a good deal.

By all means, someone please explain to me how you're going to play 12 guys.

I bet there will still be people whining that Novak and VSpan aren't getting playing time.

sura for korver, te for hunter.

hunter's contract is considered an albatross.

rocks would also be cutting around 6.5M in lux tax for them with this deal.

it's only fair they compensate by giving up korver.

I never said you have them to play them all in one game. You keep a guy like Snyder/Bonzi or add another to have that depth in the playoff's. You still have injury questions, matchup issues, etc.

I take JLIII out of that rotation, he's not on my playoff roster. It also looks like JVG is going in another direction than using him to backup Rafer. I have no issue trading Padgett, JLIII, V-Span, or even Novak if they bring in someone who'll actually play

So do tell what lower-level players do you trade for a middle-tier player?

I did tell. I would happily trade Snyder to bring in a rotation player.

In fact, I would happily trade any combination of players on the bench/payroll right now if I felt we were getting anything worthwhile in return. If you trade guys who aren't even cracking the rotation, you're cost is basically nothing.

Face it, VSpan and Novak aren't making a difference.

Snyder COULD potentially make a difference, but at what cost? Is Luther going to get less minutes? He's playing fine. You wanna sit Bonzi some more? We need him for the playoffs, right?

I mean... seriously. We have an overabundance of 2 and 3 types. We desperately need a quality backup or starting PG, and our PF spot is pretty suspect, although Howard has stepped it up and Hayes has been very effective with Yao in the lineup.

The only reason I mentioned Snyder is because he is exactly the type of player that other teams would be interested in. He can contribute, and he's low cost. And trading him doesn't hurt our chemistry. People seem to forget that the team is playing very well right now. Why risk ruining that by shaking things up just to shake things up? You'll notice that Bonzi is being added to the mix, but it is and will continue to be a gradual process.

The fact that Bonzi is seeing playing time is virtual a confirmation that Snyder will not. There just aren't enough minutes to go around.

We should keep Snyder for next year. Bonzi will be long gone by then.

I agree about trading the other guys for guy's who'll help. I just don't want to get rid of Snyder b/c his length, size, atheleticism will come in handy down the road. Plus he's young and cheap.

I don't think you get rid of Snyder this season, basically because you have no way to count on Bonzi being here after this year. Let Snyder learn JVG's system really well, learn behind Bonzi and TMac, and next year he can fill the role that Bonzi was *supposed* to fill this year.

Frankly, I don't want to lose anyone off this current roster except Padgett and Sura. I want to see what this core group of guys can accomplish, especially after Yao comes back.

I would not be opposed to replacing Padgett and Sura on the roster with someone like Huner or Alexander Johnson, and Atkins. I think if Atkins comes in here, within a week, everyone forgets about Mike James.

If your definition of "down the road" is next season, I don't really have a problem with that.

Next year and late this season. I just feel his atheletic ability will be utilized when we play teams like Phoenix/Dallas. Plus he can play defense.

Agree, Snyder is the best athlete on the team and a true slasher. Like John Hollinger from ESPN said, the rockets stole Snyder from New Orleans. Also I would not mind the rockets using their TE to aquire a guy like Steven Hunter.

Is it just me or does it seem like the last posts repeated themselves over and over? :p

Well, I agree, too, but Korver is a pipedream. Would love to have him and his 3-point shooting would be a huge asset, but I don't see them trading him at all.

Very intriguing comments by Morey. I've been wondering if we were going to use the TE, and if we were going to make a trade, aside from the TE. If you can believe Morey, we intend to. Obviously, a point and a 4/5 is what they'll be looking for. Good discussion here about who they (the Rocks) might be willing to move to make the right deal. You have to think that Snyder, Lucas, Novak, Billy, Padgett, Sura (for cap space), and possibly Wells are in the mix, plus future picks.

I think we'll hang on to Wells. He's starting to show that he can make an impact while he's in, and he's still working himself into shape. Padgett has been pretty useless, which may make him hard to include in a deal, ironically, but I hope not. Lucas could catch the interest of a GM, and if we got someone like Atkins, we wouldn't need him. (and we can pick up a point in the draft this summer) Novak is the kind of guy who I would hate to lose, based on "potential," which makes him an interesting possibility for other teams. With the new rules, a big who is money from the outside can fit into a lot of rotations, given experience. Snyder might be one of our best chips in a potential move, although I'd like to keep him. He's cheap, and has a lot of upside, fitting in with the current trend towards multiple tall, athletic wings coming at you in waves. (see Mavs, Suns) Billy? What can you say about Billy. I don't think we can move him, unless a GM is enamored with his performance in the World Games, and hasn't been looking too closely at what he's done, so far, in Houston. And I like him. It'd be nice to see him in enough Rockets games to get a good sense of what he can do, but we need players who can contribute towards a playoff run, and Billy seems to be glued to the pine. So I think he might be moved in the right deal.

It's going to be fun seeing what happens!

OK, I know everyone is busy dreamcasting trades but why was this a part of the interview?

The team should not have a thought process about drafting high schoolers because they can't. If we are talking about the past, Morey's experience has nothing to do with the Rockets so who cares what he thought in Boston when the rules were different.

    Just found it odd...

Back to the dreamcasting - how about:
    Billy Spanoulis
    for
    Darko Milicic

    aka
    Euro TMac
    for
    Euro Garnett

    TRADE ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think Snyder has a place on this team anymore, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved along with Sura for another big or a pg.

Trading Novak will come back to haunt us- another team will develop his talent as a spot up three point shooter- he can be deadly!
    Up for trade-TE+ Padgett+Sura.

Lance started talking about how young PGs around the league have struggled and he mentioned some guys like Telfair who happened to come out of highschool.

I THINK he was trying to make a point about VSpan and how it's going to take time.

But, it just turned into a conversation with Morrey talking about the success of highschoolers, etc.

I would like to know why would Philly want to give up Steven Hunter unless he is still affected by past injury problems or if he is demanding more minutes. He is 26 years old, tall, fairly athletic and is backing up Dalembert pretty well right now which seems like a need for them. If his contract is 4 years for 3 million it seems reasonable unless they are worried by it or if Phiily wants picks/players plus salary cap relief. Any comments?
