God, this is just so sad to me, that we are geeked about getting Antonio Daniels as our starting PG.

So Daniels was a much weaker option when Barry went down for Seattle, and Barry was optainable for the MLE (without giving up future picks). Now we are going to take a weaker player, give up a 7 million TE and throw in a future pick?

Daniels salary is not 7 million, so can this be done anyway? Do other players have to be involved to equal the 7 million from Seattle's end?

If I had to choose from Daniels (with the TE and pick) and trading the TE to cleveland for Wagner and Battie, theres no doubt which one makes sense?

Daniels for a future pick makes sense, not trading the farm for him.

This is not the first time Rockets have tried to go after Antonia Daniels. He has was on Rockets radar last year at this time too. Interestingly enough, Portland was interested in him too. FRom AP press July 9, 2003.

    Wednesday, July 9

    Rockets reportedly interested in Daniels

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

HOUSTON -- The agent for Portland free agent point guard Antonio Daniels said the Houston Rockets have inquired into the player's interest in playing for them, Houston television station KRIV reported Wednesday night.

Daniels spent four seasons with the San Antonio Spurs before playing with Portland last season.

Tony Dutt, Daniels' agent, told KRIV that Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson contacted him to say he believes Daniels would be a good fit in Houston.

"Antonio would love to play in Houston. He considers the Rockets one of the better-run franchises," Dutt said.

Portland president Steve Patterson told the station, "We still have interest in Antonio, and we are continuing to have conversations with his representative."

I always thought Daniels was underated. Picking him up with a 2 mil contract is good value. That's something the Rockets haven't been very good at.

As to giving up a #1 pick that's a fair trade. Quite frankly does anyone here have confidence in the Rocket's drafting ability? Outside of slamdunk deals like Yao the Rockets could just as well have passed over the last 5 years.

Just FYI, the Rockets GOT the 6.9M Trade Exception by trading Glen Rice away AND our 2004 1st round pick.

So in theory making a Daniels +1st rounder is like saying Daniels + 2 1st rounders.

If the Rockets have to give up a 1st rounder to get Daniels, it should have HEAVY protections (as mentioned before protected up to 20 or something like that). And probably should be a 2006 or 2007 pick. That way we have our own 2005 pick to use next year.

Antonio Daniels is not flashy, dominating or spectacular. But he might be the right fit with T-Mac and Yao. Best aspect about him is that he is a big point guard and plays solid defense, which means that Rockets can create havoc for opposing teams by pressuring the ball. T-Mac , Antonio Daniels, and Jimmy Jackson should be a great weopons for JVG's stifling defense. All three are solid man-o-man defenders, and can close out th epassing lanes. AD is not a superstar but he can be the perfect complimentary player.

I maybe in the minority here, but I prefer a solid defender like Daniels over a weak defender like Brent Barry. Great defense has the potential to wreak opposing teams gameplan. Rockets have never enjoyed solid defense at point guard spot. If Antonio Daniels can do the same job for Rockets as Ron Harper did for Bulls during their second 3-peat run, he is worth it and more. He is not a bad shooter as some might think. Here is what was posted about him on ESPN site during January of 2004 while playing for Sonics.

    ESPN

Antonio Daniels, Sonics. Flip Murray received all the pub for his early-season scoring in place of Ray Allen, but Daniels has been far more effective and efficient at both ends of the floor. Logging less than 20 minutes a night, he's averaging 7.9 points on 51 percent field-goal shooting, 40 percent from the 3-point arc and flashing a gaudy 4.67 assist/turnover ratio. He's shooting better from the arc than Flip is overall.

with exception to Yao, the rockets have had some horrible drafts. I'm not thrilled about giving up a #1 pick, but it'll have some protection on it. We've already got 2 players who will be overseas once the season starts, do we really need a third?

    Nice find Zboy.

I think some people tend to forget that with Yao & TMac, Daniels won't have to play great but he will still put up pretty good numbers all-around because the game will be that much easier for him. He is a great fit for both Yao & TMac. He knows how to go through a big guy (Yao) like he did in SA, and he knows how to run a break from his days in Portland & Seat., which will be great with TMac. He has been good where ever he has been and whatever offensive style was used.

No way I am going to trade a No.1 for Daniels... As Deuce pointed out, it was like trading two N0.1 for Daniels. If we had kept our own pick this draft, we would have drafted Nelson as our PG. If we had kept our draft pick in 2003, we would have drafted Luke Ridnour.

Most of people thought FAs would go crazy over Yao-T-Mac and so far every good FA has pretty much chosen other teams and we have to give up draft No.1 pick to get an 7ppg-3apg PG????

The West is terrifically balanced, and the #1 could be anywhere in the draft. Please let it be well protected.

These players were drafted #20-30 in the 1999-2003 drafts:

#20 Kareem Rush, Brendan Haywood, Speedy Claxton
    #21 Morris Peterson, Jeff Foster
    #22 Kenny Thomas
    #23 Tayshaun Prince, Devean George
    #24 Raul Lopez, Andrei Kirilenko
    #25
    #26 Samuel Dalembert
    #27 Jamaal Tinsley
    #28 Tony Parker, Scott Padgett
    #29 Josh Howard, Mark Madsen
    #30 Marko Jaric

You can't just write off these picks as being deadweight and saying, "Oh they won't pan out anyway." It's well worth the risk to invest time and money to develop these players. Antonio Daniels, while he MAY be our best option right now, is, IMO, NOT WORTH 2 FIRST ROUND PICKS. Like Deuce said, unless the 1st rounder is heavily conditioned, we shouldn't have to throw it in to get AD, their backup (now, maybe even 3rd string PG with the emergence of Ridnour) PG.

Daniels will be UFA next summer with no Bird rights? Scary. Very scary.

    It's not sad at all.

Antonio Daniels turns the ball over less than ONE TIME per 23 MIN. Do you understand what that's like for a pg?

    He also had a ~ .470 fg%. Freaking insane for a pg. #1 in ast/TO last year.

This guy is one of the best if not the best choice of ball handling in the NBA based on statistics.

What a refreshing change Daniels will be instead of Francis.

'Refresh' me with Steve Francis, flaws and all (not at the cost of McGrady, but short of TMac I am sorry to see Stevie gone).
