Very true. He's not some bricklayer that takes bad jumpshots and has a shooting percentage hovering around 40% which is the picture many have painted of him. Is his 3PT % as good as Redick's? Certainly not, but are we now calling anyone that doesn't shoot 40% from 3 a bad shooter? That's nonsense. 34% is nothing to bash a guy over.

I don't think many people here would call Tracy McGrady a BAD 3 point shooter. He's not great, but he's a threat and is very capable when his shot is feeling good. Want to take a stab at his career percentage?

34% from college 3-point line is a huge concern, especially when he will be asked to park near the 3 point line to bomb from outside.

Tracy's job is not to stand at the 3 point line and bang in threes either. Many of his threes are forced as he is the clock option as it runs out because he is the only one that can create his own space to get a shot off. If tracy's job was to stand ungaurded at the three point line, he would probably be closer to 50%, but, what fool would leave Tracy alone? The question is who is our best option to hit the open threes that Yao and Tracy create? Generally, college kids percentages from three go down from what they shot as they adjust to the new distance and have to add strength to get off the shot. A plunge from .344 doesn't exactly give confidence.

Again, I don't know where people get the idea that 34% from 3 is seen as some huge crutch. Many of the players considered among the very best shooters in NBA history have 3PT %'s that are only about 4% higher. It's not difficult math. That's 4 extra made 3 pointers for every 100 taken. Big deal. Yes, at a certain point a player isn't seen as a threat once his % goes low enough, but 34% ain't in that area yet by any means as far as I'm concerned.

Of course, we won't know what he'll do in the NBA yet, but you could say that about anybody. I just don't understand the feeling that 34% is some red flag that shows he would fail at the next level.

EDIT: I can already sense this discussion going on a lot longer than it should, so I am just going to agree to disagree. Come December or so, maybe we can dig all this stuff back up, but for now it's pretty pointless. I told myself I wouldn't bother with this draft debate at least until next Wednesday lol :p

No more posts from me in this thread.

More misleading information. Brewer's FG percentage if you take out the 3 balls is 49%. Now, if you take out all his layups and dunks, what do you think that percentage falls to?

In contrast, Redick's shooting percentage minus the three balls is 52%. Now, how many layups/dunks do you think we have to take away from that number?

Brewer is a good talent and he brings a lot to the table. But you guys should NOT try to say he is an adequate NBA shooter.

This is how I heard him, and I think this needs to be stressed.

People seeing(instead of hearing) the Reddick quote might think this is a sure indicator, but he really didn't have much emphasis/emotion in any of the words, as was the case with all of his prospect comments.

Lance had asked him about Reddick(after making comments about him testing out better than imagined athletically at the pre-draft), and JVG said that if a player has 1 really good skill(like JJ's shooting) you can make it as long as your other skill areas aren't horrible. He didn't say whether he thought JJ's other areas were or not. I don't know if he puts as much stock into the testing as Lance does.

Also said that you don't just need outside shooting(team-wise), but driving ability, and finishing at the rim.

When talking about Brewer he complimented his background, and all-around skills, but said that if he were on the Rocks then you would need to have shooters on the floor with him. I guess he doesn't consider his outside shot really good.

Carney he said shoots a good deep ball, and athletic/fast, but added the knock about lack of intensity(does he want another 'Stro?).

Don't think you could gain anything definitive from his comments, which is probably smart, even though we might not like it. I don't know if he's going on the Rocket scouts for his opinions or what, because he has said that he doesn't get into the draft that much.

On the finals he said that Wade was playing phenomenal, and that he thought Dallas should keep him out of the lane more(double teams/help) because when he gets that many ft's(25 iirc) he puts your whole team at a disadvantage(foul trouble).

Said that one luxury Wade had(asked to compare to LBJ) was that when he drives to the hole the center doesn't come off Shaq for fear of the lob-dunk, or rebound miss-dunk. Also said that Dirk helps out Terry in a similar way because Dirk's man won't leave him on the high pick-and-roll resulting in wide open jumper
    s for JT.

Wow, it sounds like he wants Redick AND Brewer. This guy is hard to figure out. Redick doesn't have that much driving ability and finishing at the rim as Brewer.

Or maybe he wants the guy in between? Carney possibly could do all that. But ugh I hate Carney.

The red flag is in college, most good shooters hit 45% or better from 19'9". NBA is what, 22 feet. I will leave it alone and no more posts from me on this subject. I like Brewer, just don't think he can shoot as well as others.

Actually I think he would prefer a combo of the 2(would that be Brewick or Red-brew).

I don't hate Carney, but I muct admit he scares me somewhat as a prospect. A real boom-or-bust scenario.

2 things alot of you are forgetting:

    1. The college 3-pointer is equivalent to a mid-range jumper in the NBA. It is significantly closer to the basket.

    2. Ronnie Brewer's shooting % reflects he is an efficient scorer, not shooter. He'll probably hover around 30% from 3 pt land as a rookie. Carney could be as effective as Luther.

With that said I would take Brewer over Carney without much thought. JVG needs to decide what is more important: a guy that will be a camper his first two years in the league, but can hit the long ball; or a versatile guard like Brewer who has an immediate impact defensively and finds ways to score and create for others. The answer is obviously the latter IMO.

Actually what I meant(joke) was 1 player that had Reddick's jumper with Brewer's all-around game. Of course a player like that wouldn't be around at 8 in this draft. He'd probably be the 1st pick.

Out of Reddick, Brewer, and Carney, Carney is a distant 3rd for me. Just too much risk. I go back, and forth with the other 2 with the wildcard being whether Reddick's defense will be decent, bad, or really bad.

Point well taken. I think that JVG really wants Miami to win because doing so would validate his philosophy of basketball. On the other hand, if Dallas wins it all, then everyone will look at that as proof that the old Pat Riley-JVG-Knicks style of basketball is done. And that is probably something he fears because his job is on the line next season and he's playing in a division with two teams that are clearly better than his team right now.

We don't need decent shooters ...we need GOOD shooters.

I'm sure Brewer wouldn't be a disaster pick ...but he doesn't address our first three priorities ...shooting.

I'm wasn't necessarily implying who I want ...I was trying to interpret what JVG says he wants. It seems JVG wants shooters and Brewer is more of a scorer rather than a shooter. It doesn't look to me like Brewer is at the top of our wish list ...maybe second tier.

I guess all the AntiRedick posters need to reconsider the points the por-Redick people have made.

This is absolutely the truth if you simply logically look at it.

It's been said over and over Redick is a better defender than Wesley already. People just are not properly judging him.

However Morrison is that 6-7 guy that can shoot, he would be priority #1, if they took him well, now Morrison is NOT a good defender, still you have to take him if you can get him.

How tall you are relating to your defense is way overrated on this board.

Rockets fans have apparently been skewed by having a 6-1 SG.

I am glad the team drafts off things like actually watching people play.

Brewer is a good player with lots of potential, BUT to defend him on his outside shot is just too much. Brewer may have the ugliest shot I have ever seen.

He hasn't played a game in the NBA, and in college he wasn't quite known for his D. Yet he is better than Wesley "already". No. He isn't.
