Ok I have solved the mystery of the Golden Hurricanes:

This comes directly from the UofT website:
    http://tulsahurricane.ocsn.com/trads/tuls-history.html

From the Virginia Tech Athletic website:

I think it is similar to a musketeer. A swordsman of some sort.

Since the space program no longer uses rockets any more, I suggest we change our name to the Houston Shuttles...

Best team name ever is the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs...

    Seattle Seahawks.

No explanation needed, because at the time they admitted it was a made up word/name. I just wonder whether it really strikes fear into opposing players' hearts!

...or, maybe they were just precognitive on the value of uniqueness in google searches ;)

This is true A-Train. I have liked that nickname ever since I saw the team on that t-shirt that Travolta wore in "Pulp Fiction". I remember I didn't even think it was a real school but it is.

I would also like to add that the most country, redneck, or hick nickname I have ever heard belongs to the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The male teams go by the name of "Boll Weevils" which are those little bugs which commonly destroy crops in the south. The female teams go by the nickname of "Cotton Blossom". Arkansas, what a state!

I'm quite fond of the Bradford Fighting Squirrels. Here is their logo on a hat.
