Clippers are an old type of naval sailing ship with multiple sails. Add in L.A.'s close proximity to the ocean and you get the L.A. Clippers.
The Clippers were originally the Buffalo Braves. When they moved to San Diego after the departure of the Rockets, they changed their name to Clippers in keeping with the maritime history of the coastal city. See drapg's image above.

buffalo is an interesting sports town. buffalo bills. i think the first owner was named bill something. but they just threw a buffalo on the damned helmet because the city is buffalo. same with the sabres. buffalos sabres. a buffalo on the jersey. whats a sabre.... anyone ever seen buffalo 66. good movie.
