also the Matt Maloney rule... his contract being the reason they moved the 3 point line back out. Otherwise too many crappy players would have huge contracts

    yes, i'm kidding..

    Soccer:

Keeper can't pick up a ball that's passed back to him with the feet. It was implemented to help get rid of some of the time wasting in the game. This was done in the late 80's or early 90's. I just know I was playing in high school at the time and it took us a few games to adjust to it.

This might be a little off topic, but i wish that the nba will consider relocating all photographers sitting on the floor. With today's 10000000000X zoom lens, an additional 8 feet would not that much of a big deal.

The Rockets' first championship showed that si was not the great chronicler of American sports, but instead was a biased east coast outfit run by douchebags.

The 1997 split championship was the impetus behind the abomination known as the BCS.

Isn't the Tuck rule still in? That play was the correct application of a rule that existed, and it hasn't been changed, right?

    Two Cowboys rules.

The Emmitt Smith rule: Automatic penalty for removing your helmet on the field of play in celebration due to Smith always taking off his helmet for touchdowns.

The Roy Williams horse collar tackle: Can't horse collar tackle because of Roy Williams using this and hurting TO.

    Also the Charles Barkley rule:

An offensive player in his frontcourt below the free throw line extended shall not be permitted to dribble with his back or side to the basket for more than five seconds.

The count ends when (1) the player picks up the ball, (2) dribbles above the free throw line extended or (3) a defensive player deflects the ball away.

"The Trent Tucker Rule is an NBA rule that disallows any regular shot to be taken on the court if the ball is put into play with less than three-tenths of a second left on the game clock. The rule was passed after the 1989-90 season and named after New York Knicks player Trent Tucker."

    what's the Bert Emmanuel rule?

Surprised no baseball rules. Does Gaylord Perry's "puff ball" count, making it illegal to put powder on the ball. haha. that was an awesome idea. Isn't there any Pete Rose rules? like making it illegal to hustle as fast as you can to 1B upon being walked because it makes you look like a complete douchebag.

Ilie Nastase wound string around string in his racket that allowed him to put the most wicked spin on the ball you could imagine. That was outlawed after one tournament.

correction in my original post. It was the Jordan vs Celtics in 1986 where he scored 63 points that changed the illegal defense to only require being one zone away from your man, rather than with a given distance. The Bulls used Jordan to go one on one against DJ while the other 4 players drew their man out to half court.

The Allan Houston Rule. But for some reason, he wasn't waived even though the rule is named after him.

didn't derek harper's molestation of kenny smith in the 94 (world) championship cause the nba to at least start calling the hand-check rule?

Surprised no one has mentioned this, but it is kind of vague.

    NFL
    --------------------------------------------------------
Expansion of the Wild Card (1978, 1990) - Originally the wild card had only been 4 teams...3 division winners and 1 Wild Card (division runner up with best record), while two more games were added to the schedule. It was expanded to add one team in 1978 and have an opening round of play. Unlike now, the opening round (Wild Card) only featured two teams, the two wild cards (division runner ups with best records) where the winner would face the one of the division winners (most likely best record in conference. While, the other two division winners faced each other. It stayed that way for most of 80s, and changed again in 1990 to add another team.

Reasons - Pete Rozelle mainly wanted to see more successful teams in the playoffs. People talk about how bad it would be this year, if one of the teams from the AFC East, NFC South, and other odd teams could have an 11-5 (or 10-6) record and not make the playoffs (ex. 1985 Broncos). Truth be told, it has happened several times, especially 80s and early 90s. Personally, I thought the competition was much better then, because teams could be kept gather longer. Also, the AFC was super competitive.

I guess that would be equivalent to the NBA Playoff seeding rule change based on the Spurs and Mavs having the two best records in the West but having to face off prior to the Conf Finals.
