PLEASE add a "Listen Live" feature to the website. Since I have moved out of Houston, I have missed Rich and Charlie's show tremendously.
I would like to see Matt and Jeremy get a 3 hour show. 7-10 would be perfect. I liked their show alot back in the day, not sure why it was canned. I like Matt alone too, but it just seems it would work better if he had someone to play off of. I am assuming that the morning show will be starting later, I would think at 6, doesn't it start a 5 now? Mark V's show is good, but it just seems like it is just sandwiched in there. I would enjoy a longer show from him, maybe an extra hour. Rich and Charlie would have to lose an hour because of the 3 hour Matt and Jeremy show, but that is not too much of a loss, IMO. More than anything a streaming option would rocketh. I can't listen in my office. The building I am in pretty much kills reception.
Another vote for a listen live internet feature so I can listen at work. We get crummy reception in my building.
Charlie Palillo is the best sportscaster in Houston, hands down. He knew his stuff at 740, when that station was the sports king, and now he's brought 610 to a level that can compete with other nation's all-sports stations. Even though at times he can be "snobby", it really only comes up with the extremely uninformed caller who comes in saying, "Couldn't they trade Yao for that shaq dude... he seems to be better now." But, one of his BEST qualities is that he STAYS AWAY FROM HOMERISM. This is the one thing that can plague any local sports station, and even though we all like cheering for the home team... you'd be suprised how fast homerism becomes old and stale. He'll always call it like he sees it... if the team had a bad night, so be it... if the team just "isn't that good," he'll say it. And, after listening to other sports shows around the country, you'd see that Charlie could hold his own with the best of them... hopefully, no other big stations will lure him away when they figure that out. Put me down for streaming audio as well...
I think this is because he has absolutely no personal interest (apart from job duties) in Houston sports. He's a northeast guy all the way...and apart from Syracuse and some other pro franchise I can't remember (the NY Giants...I think), he never 'homers' for anyone.
I've learned to like Palillo more and more. You're right about homerism but occasionally he takes it too far. The other day, he said that the Rockets have "no chance" of beating the Lakers in the playoffs. He was very emphatic about it. It almost seemed like he was trying to provoke people. I mean, of course the lakers would be favored, but to say we have "no chance" is just silly considering the way we've played against them this year. But yes, he is pretty much the best sports talk guy in town hands down. 610 better not mess with him...
ok..i don't like sports guys who seemingly have zero rooting interests. dan patrick does that a bit, too. if you don't ever have a rooting interest, you're missing the whole fun of sports...the whole reason i'm compelled to watch in the first place. i don't like homerism, either...but there's nothing wrong with the sports radio talk show hosts helping to build excitement for the teams that are in the town they play to.
Rich is the big NY Giants and Yankees fan. As for Charlie's non-homerism, DO NOT confuse that with no personal interest in Houston sports. When Andy Pettite and Roger Clemens signed here, you could notice a genuine enthusism in his voice... he was pretty psyched about the fact that the Astros were getting these guys. In fact, one caller even said, "C'mon... you're making such a big deal about this only because its happening in Houston... how come you don't make a big deal of the Yankees signings or the Cubs signings?"... to which he responded, "Because, we do have a much more vested interest in the home-team... because frankly, we're in Houston... and we want to see these teams do well." Additionally, he'll get fans pumped up about the Rockets when things are goin good... "this team is humming right now," and, in response to us not beating the Lakers (which he's being pretty realistic there... and was referring more to the way they are playing now, rather than the way we are playing), he has ALWAYS said that the Rockets were going to make the playoffs, even when they suffered that mini three game losing streak last week. So, for a guy who has no rooting interest, he basically had more optimism about this team's chances than almost half the BBS when we were in the midst of that losing streak...
Another vote for streaming audio. I don't understand why stations like the Buzz and the Ticket can have streaming audio, but it seems like such an impossible feat for 610 to put together.
I think it is because it is expensive to have online streaming. In my searches for audio links before and during the Rockets season I came across a lot of stations who canceled their streaming because of the cost. There was also something about the advertising rights.
Couldn't agree more. Palillo is my absolute favorite. He's objective, informed, and one of the most knowledgable sportscasters I have heard -- especially for a local market. Rich is ok, but if you listen to the show, you can easily tell that Charlie is running that show's intellectual ship. Rich is just along for the ride. Matt Jackson is 'Rome-lite'. It's like he is trying to be cool by osmosis. His cadence, the pregnant pauses, and even some of the phrases he drops are pure Rome. There has been more than one occasion when I've hit up 610 apparently during one of Matt's eight-second pauses where I swore the station was off the air or something. Then, after a ton of dead air, here comes Matt again with his 'take'. What's the deal with Laura Reynolds? Is it just me or does she seem just a tad jaded with life? I'm sure it's part of the schtick, but I've heard Palillo shut down her rants and emplore her to get on with the traffic report. Funny stuff. I think the whole 'vixen-traffic lady' thing may have gone to her head a wee bit. Haven't listened to Rome regularly the way I used to several years ago. He contradicts himself so much on issues that it's laughable. I agree that the interviews are the best part of his show. I don't know what to make of Dan Patrick. I don't find him funny in the least, yet I still listen to his show. Maybe I'm just a sportstalk junkie. I don't know. I guess when his producer is 'efforting' to get an interview, that is supposed to be the Patrick equivalent to Rome 'chasing' an interview. Enough ranting for now.
Paraphrasing for the 3/31 Rich and Charlie show: "Tune in this afternoon for the last afternoon shift as we know it!" Gee. Tommorow. April first? I know its a hard balance Chance, but you guys tipped your hand too early.
Of course it is. Normally they wouldn't be making any money that time on the weekends from local spots during a national show the way they can with a local show. It may not be sports but it generates a ton of calls.
Tom Tynan's show is great, It's a nice 2 hour sports sabbatical. Plus, Home Improvement is sport to me.
