i've glanced at this thread today...and i think you're exactly right. nothing comes close in the sports world to losing the leader of the free world in the midst of the cold war.

My toughest days as sports fans were when these men passed on.

1.Derrick Thomas- By far my favorite defensive player growing up. Unbelievable linebacker that played the game with so much passion. I always watched the chiefs just for him even now occasionaly I still turn on the tv expecting to see him out there when i watch a KC game. :(

    2. Walter Payton- his press conference was tough to watch. My father was in tears as we watched it on the news. I'm to young to have seen him play but his highlight runs are amazing. I love watching his son play even though it is clear that he is no where near the skill level of his father. Its just awsome to see him a score a TD and give a tribute to his father. I wonder if anybody will give him a shot in the NFL?

    3. Daryl Kyle- One of my favorite Astros growing up. The game that the astros played that day when DK passed was something special. I'll always remember being in awh of his curveball as a kid.

JULES: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop right there. The death of a president and losing a f*cking football game ain't even the same f*cking thing.

VINCENT: Not the same thing, the same ballpark.

JULES: It ain't no ballpark either. Look, maybe your method of defining tragedy differs from mine, but comparing JFK's blown head to some damn football game ain't the same ballpark, ain't the same league, ain't even the same f*ckin' sport. Football games don't mean ****.

(sorry -- for some reason, it just came to mind!)

    :p

But, on a personal level, these events kicked me in the gut:

    41-38

    Buckner, Game 6

    Red Sox, 2003 ALCS

    Jeff Alm - Oilers, suicide

Derrick Thomas - Chiefs, killed in car accident

Korey Stringer - Vikings, died of Heat Stroke at practice

Steve Prefontain - track star, killed in car wreck

Steve Belcher - Orioles pitcher, ephedra related death

Darryl Kile - Cardinals (fromer 'Stros pitcher) found dead in hotel

Several "tragedies" in those families lives... and I 'm sure to them, it was just as bad as the JFK family went through.:(
