    Please regale us with your previous expectations of supermassive black hole spin alignment. :p

    I'm not sure it's *totally* surprising. We've known that there are these thick threads running through the universe, with relative voids elsewhere. Simulations show gravity bringing these threads together after the big bang.

    Maybe as the threads congealed, they would naturally develop some angular momentum around the central axis of the thread, and the densest pockets would naturally have the greatest angular momentum, and just by intro physics logic, you would expect more of the spins to be aligned along that central axis than not.

    Put another way:
    Do you really not prefer funny gifs?
