I guess I forgot that part... was this AFTER he was shot? People tend to forgive & forget when they are in dying mode.

After awaking back to "reality" i'm sure he would've been more upset then impressed.

So about the significance of the kicks?

In a non-sedated sleep state, it's basically just to wake up a person from a dream. But in the multi-level, heavily sedated sleep state, I still don't quite understand why it's important.

For instance what do you think would have happened if the elevator kick wasn't able to be constructed? What would the outcome have been?

All the dreamers in the hotel dream would be stuck in limbo.

Because the sedative is so strong they need to experience falling to wake them up.

Did they specifically say that in the movie..that it was Yusuf's dream? For one that doesn't make sense because Ariadne created the world...so why wouldn't it be just her dream then? Yusuf wouldn't have known the details of that world to dream it; like Leo said, don't give out details. Unless he only meant that for him. And second, I could have sworn during the planning phase they said in order to pull off inception, they would have to travel deep into the subconscious. Why would they go into everyone else's subconscious when they have to plant an idea into Fischer's head. And if they never went into Fischer's head, then how was it that his mind set off those safeguards to protect it. If they were never in his mind, then those soldiers would never have appeared. But they are all essentially sharing the dream, since they are all hooked up to the machine. We don't exactly know how the technology works, just that the architect creates the world that is inhabited by the targets projections. So since we don't know how the technology works, whose to say they can't enter his subconscious and create this world for him that he populates with his own projections. And if they were in Yusuf's dream, then his subconscious would fill that world with his own projections.

I could be wrong...and if you can point to a quote from the movie that specifically says that it was Yusuf's dream, then Arthur's then Eams or whatever, then fine. It just seems more logical that in order to plant an idea into someone's head you have to travel deep into THEIR subconscious.

The Dreamer (Yusef, Arthur, Eames) creates the world.

The Mark (Fischer) fills it with their subconscious.

Cobb meant don't give HIM details. Because of Mal.

But wait, she was specifically the "architect." Did she teach them how to create the world?

Why would they need an architect then..it would seem kind of risky to have someone else design a dream for you...seems like it would lead to problems in the dream, if you forget a detail here or there.

I dunno maybe I just to watch it again.

There was a scene during the same scene where they kept dropping JGL/Arthur out of his chair, where Ariadne was showing the designs to Yusef, Arthur, and Eames. (Not sure they showed them all, but I know Yusef definitely was shown w/ Ariadne looking at the city designs)

If you remember, Ariadne wasn't originally supposed to go along on the trip. It was only because she feared for the safety of the others because of Mal, and Cobb didn't want them to find out, he let her tag along to try to keep him from losing his mind and letting Mal's projections from his subconscious project into the dream (which obviously, was more and more difficult as the movie went on).

Cobb tell Saito "get us another seat on the plane" for Ariadne.

Okay, that would help to explain it.

"Create a maze in 2 minutes that it would take someone 1 minute to solve"

First few tries were a few seconds... once she got a grasp of what he meant, she started to think about how things should work, she seemed to catch on pretty quickly from what Cobb said. And Miles (Michael Caine) saying Adriane would be a better architect than Cobb was. It's kind of assumed she'd be able to create something better than the rest would.

Also, to be more clear, should we really call them the "dreamers." Everybody is actually dreaming, right? It's just one person seems to take the lead as the primary creator of the dream.

I mean, Fischer was still dreaming the whole time. It's just the setting of the dream was created by someone else and manipulated by the others who were in the dream. Fischer's subconscious was fighting back, because as they mentioned earlier in the movie, when the mark's subconscious realizes it's dream is being manipulated by someone else, it doesn't like it.

Speaking as someone working in the field, unfortunately not in the dreaming part, an architect is trained in space planning and in things like finishes in details so even if they aren't building the dream themselves they create the plans that the dreamer builds.

Also when Ariadne first goes into Cobb's dream world she alters it so the architect can both plan the dream for the specific dreamer to build but also build it.

a bit off-topic but for those who caught the The Town (Ben and Casey Affleck) preview was it just me or did anyone else think they spoiled the movie? If you know what i'm referring to then i guess you agree.

I think this is probably where I was trying to go with my point. I mean to me it just doesn't seem logical that everybody would be in Yusuf's mind or dream (or whatever) if they are trying to plant an idea into Fischer's subconscious. They are all sharing the dream, one person provides the world while another (the mark) fills it with their own projections. So maybe it's not a matter of level 1 was this person's dream, level 2 this person's and so on. But merely Yusuf was responsible for constructing the level 1 world, Arthur level 2 and Eames level 3...since it would be too difficult for one person alone to remember all three levels.

Now a good question is how they get the "mark" and only the "mark" to fill that world with their own projections. I guess it has to do with the conspirators knowing that they are creating a false dream.

I guess what I'm thinking is that if a team needs a specialist, an architect to design the dream world for them, wouldn't it be somewhat risky to have someone else build the dream that the architect designed. Even if they spend countless hours memorizing all the details, they could still get it wrong. That could lead to perhaps the "mark's" subconscious being alerted to the dream being fake or even could lead to the team's deaths.

    ---

But then at the same time, an architect in the real world doesn't actually construct their own designs. They put them in the hands of contractors and builders. And considering Ariadne has little experience manipulating the dreamworld, it would make sense for her to pass those designs on to the rest of the team. She has experience designing, they have more experience building and manipulating dreams.

This thread explains the movie wasn't just a dream. Cobb's totem was his wedding ring. He only "WEARS THE RING IN LIMBO and DREAMS ONLY...In the end when he is back home he does not have the ring."

The ending is real, and it's a happy ending for our protagonist.

I don't think the ring was his totem. A totem is the object you use to help verify between reality and dream, and I think that's what the top was, and how Cobb intended to use it. Otherwise, there would be no need to spin the top at all.

But even if the ring isn't his totem, I do agree that its appearance and nonappearance differentiates the line between the two worlds. I think the end was reality.

    From the thread:

"The totem DOES NOT differentiate between reality and the dream world. It DOES however let the owner of the totem know if he/she is in their own dream or someone else's. If they are in someone else's dream, the totem would be different because the person constructing the dream wouldn't know the exact size/shape/weight/feel of the totem."

"A totem is something in reality that another dreamer doesn't know the details of, and can't create accurately in the dream."
