I don't understand why one needs to wait til Dallas finishes playing before announcing the Casey hire. Given that Casey has already been interviewing for head coaching jobs (with Houston and, I think, Golden State) with the Mavs' permission, I don't see how an announcement of his agreement to take a head coaching job will affect his performance or be a distraction for any of the Mavs players.
Is there a precedent for announcing head coaching hires while whatever assistant is still coaching for their current playoff team?
It makes the rest of his tenure (short, but high-stakes) a lame-duck position. Players might doubt his commitment. He himself might be tempted to spend more time than he ought thinking about Houston's roster. Announcing would be in poor taste. Even telling Casey privately wouldn't be cool.
Well, if they go down in flame like the Lakers did, then who knows. That said, I'm not sure if I want Spoelstra if he's available.
According to Wikipedia's Tom Thibodeau page, his decision to accept the Bulls job was reported during the middle of the NBA Finals but was not formally announced until the end.
Yep, good point. And Brian Shaw may be in play. And WorldWideWes may yet decide Coach Cal needs to play in TheToyShop? But, and however, I do believe the delay is proof (almost) positive that neither Kevin Clothes-Line nor Mini-Frank are going to fill the chair.
I would suspect that Cubes is allowing Casey to interview, but not negotiate. And, frankly, (for once) I don't blame MC-cubed.
I find it interesting that at the same time Stan Van Gundy may be out as Majic head coach, his brother mentions possibly being an assistant coach.
