Lets say you have a 3 bedroom apartment that 4 people are living in. So 2 of them have to share a room, although the shared room is twice as big as the other 2 rooms.

    The total rent is 2000.

How much should each person pay?

If you all agreed for this particular place then it should be equal all around. Then you all should figure out who gets what room. By flipping a coin or something who knows.

Why would you all get a 3 bedroom for 4 people? Just wondering the reasoning.

I have to agree with playlife. The two people with their own rooms should pay the 600 because of the extra privacy they get. Just my take.

People share rooms all the time. It's a cost saver. playlife is right. No way two dudes sharing a room pay as much as everyone else.

I agree with that... If the idea was to save money then sure 600,600,400,400.. I was just saying if this was never brought up. Then you get the place and people argue they should pay less. Then I think that is a problem.

Are all the rooms the same size?

EDIT: Yaozer, what if the 2 dudes sharing the room are bff or bf's ? ;)

    Go from there.

This would be a good idea if the two people sharing a room are a couple. Save more money and sexy time every night. Unless you're a student, then you won't get anything done.

I was assuming those two were a couple.

Playlife's split is good. You can also measure all common and private areas. Split the cost of all common areas equally. Split the cost of all private areas by square footage used.

he said the shared room was twice as big as the others. but hey privacy comes at a price. if i have to share my room i might as well go live with my parents...for FREE.

It is 4 hetero dudes. This way is cheaper than splitting up and getting 2 2brs.

    1. 550
    2. 550
    3. 450
    4. 450

I don't think a 600/400 split is fair if everyone essentially has equal space, and privacy is the only factor.

You are in Austin right? Is there not any 4 bedroom rental homes for 2k or less there?

I always thought the correct way to do this was to split it up by room. Each room pays 1/3 of the rent, but utilities are split equally four ways.

auction off the 2 private rooms.

Who ever will pay the most extra for a private room gets it.

    1. $666.67
    2. $666.67
    3. $333.33
    4. $333.33

The rent should be divided 3 ways for the three rooms... the "couple" sharing the room should pay half of the single room fee.

Yeah that's cool except for the fact that there is no wall between you and the dude sleeping next to you. That is more of a factor than square footage.

Don't forget you have common shared areas.

    55/45 is fair
