Updating their earth disguised form is one thing..in terms of physics, megatron transfroming into a gun won't work; and in mondernizing it, a tape deck won't fit the bill either for Soundwave. But here's my beef...the supposed reasoning for the thinner, insect-like forms is that the blockier forms the original generation wouldn't realistically work. Ok I buy that, until I see the fan created transformation of an Optimus Prime and (I think it was) the VW commercial that saw a car transform. Both looked closer to the original transformers and both looked badass. So this whole argument about the physics being unrealistic if you stick to the original design I think is nonsense. Now I'm not totally hung up about it, but other than a few character's names and original voice actors, this is looking like it won't resember it's original creation at all. And that's a bad thing when you attach the name Transformers to it. X-Men, Spidey, Batman, Superman were updated to better suit the world today but stayed faithful to the original. Why can't this?
Because it is really gay. Transformers were about the franchise in the 80's. Had Michael Bay decided to keep their robots in their respective suits, it may have, at least, been a really fun ride. But Bay chose to suck hard once again.
Having watched the trailer again, I think what they are going for is making the transformers look alien, which they are, and menacing. Afterall these are massive robots running around trying to kill each other. Transformers, right next to robotech, has some of the softest spot in my childhood memories and I really don't have a problem with the designs even though they aren't what I thought they would be. I think a lot of the negative stuff is coming from Michael Bay hate, which he deserves to a certain extent Pearl Harbor was nearly unwatchable. However if he's shown something in his career it that he can direct action at least IMHO
True but, for me anyways, I actually like Michael Bay, Pearl Harbor and the Bad Boy movies aside. I liked Armageddon for the popcorn goodness it was and The Rock is an action classic. The Island was pretty good too. I'm sure I'll like the movie; it's giant transforming robots beating the s**t outta each other! Still, I would've liked to see something more faithful.
Looks a lot better than I was expecting -- just like Rocky. I hope they make a Robotech movie someday that would be cool.
because transformers, unfortunately, have only gone through a couple of decades where as the above mentioned have gone on for much, much, much longer. it's not that tf doesn't have a loyal following, but they're not a household name... like superman. yah... the vw bug transformation was "badass". but there is "badass" and there is "badasser" (i think). i was somewhat spectacle (misspelled intentionally) of the new megatron pics that someone posted in this thread a while ago, but after seeing this trailer, i'll be happy that just the name "transformers" will bring a larger fanbase instead of the originals. in other words, i'm happy that i got to play with the hard arse metal (if thrown, could kill somebody) transformers, but i'm happy that other generations can enjoy the somewhat similar wussy bendable plastic transformers... if it means that transformers can carry on. btw, on the michael bay msg board some time ago he posted a thread asking for ideas for 80's references to put in the movie. soooooo, did anyone notice the "my little pony" reference in the trailer? bad arse! tf forever!
Oh yeah, definitely. My fear is the studios would hire some famous pop singer to play Minmei to cash in on crossing over and having a 'hit song' in the movie.

I was talking to my bud a couple of weeks back and we were both shocked that Robotech has never even been considered as a movie project. I think of all the cartoons from my childhood Robotech is the most ready for a film verison

Yeah, the first Macross series with Rick Hunter etc was definitely a very mature show for kids on weekday afternoons. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to make it a PG-13 or even an R with all the violence.
Bright LIGHTS New HEIGHTS Things are get-ting be-tter Oh man, I barely remember that show but I remember that refrain, because my mom heard it once and began singing it to annoy me.
I agree on this that Robotech was the most mature cartoon from when I was a kid. It was the only one where people actually got killed. Unliked G.I.Joe in which everyone dodged bullets like the Matrix.
