The theater I was in was very cynical about a bunch of stuff. I'd say about a quarter of the people laughed at Peter crying, and about the same amount cheered when Peter smacked MJ.
Thanks for the warning, DaDakota, et al... I probably will wait until it's on DVD to show my kids... That's funny... you're an EARLY "bloomer", aren't you? It's still spring, brother. A-Train, I think I might bring that movie back just to see her tender as well. "Daddy...? Uhh... why are you watching this movie by yourself and why are your pants unzipped? " "Shut up and go back to bed! It's 3 a.m.! " m_cable, I agree, it matters what acrowd is around you and how they react... it could ruin stuff...
The movie was fine. best of the 3, imo. was pleasantly surprised how well they juggled all the different storylines considering it was just one movie.
It doesn't live up to the hype. I was disappointed but it wasn't a bad movie. It was fun. A bit rushed but the action scenes were good. The relationship between Harry and Peter felt real. Tobey did a good job and so did Topher. Venom still having Eddie's voice did annoy me as well as Harry's butler holding in that important piece of information for so long. Peter can be emotional but to the point of crying like a little baby? A bit too much for me. The scenes with Peter acting all cocky were funny and I can actually see that being written into a comic. I give it a B. I wasn't expecting a Harry/Peter team-up and I didn't expect Harry to die either. I'd watch it again.
See, when Harry was in the hospital bed and he said that he had great friends and he'd die for them, or give his life for them, I felt pretty confident he'd end up sacrificing his life to save Spidey. Guess it just felt like foreshadowing to me.....
awesome movie and introduced me to this fine piece of art Screw Dunst, it was all about Eliza Dushku in this movie
I was dissappointed as well. I think the biggest problem was clearly the writing. There were plenty of great action scenes, the best of the series overall. But there was too many story lines crammed in not allowing any of them to be fully explored and realized. The Sandman's story and motivation needed more screen time and more attention needed to be payed to the parallels of trying to do the right thing the wrong way. We see why he's a criminal, but it's never touched on again until the very end. Harry's story is wrapped up way to easily with the Butler's revelation. How can he be that angry one minute and then be chummy and bouncing off banter with Peter at the end. Also, how could the Butler hold on to that info for so long? I liked Eddie Brock, different from the comics, but it worked. Topher Grace is a bit of a character actor though and it was hard not to think of him as playing a version of himself. They derinately should have saved Venom though, I like the idea of him just being a tease for the next movie and wish they had done that instead. Hopefully, he'll be fleshed out better in a sequel, which of course there will be with all the money this one made. Hell, it should pay itself off with the first weekend alone. I never liked Dunst as Mary Jane, in this movie, the character became even more annoying than the actress. Good god, her whole "how can you compare your struggles to mine" trip made me want to slap her. Oh, you are a struggling actress with bad reviews, how could Peter ever understand that? He only risked his life for years protecting innocent people only to be branded a criminal by the local media and mistrusted by the general public. JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson is always awesome (I love how he reprises that role on the Simpsons). As for the problems with the writing, it seemed like Ivan Raimi did most of the writing and I bet he's the one who comes up with the corny lines. I get the feeling now that in Army of Darkness, when Bruce Campbell says stuff like "groovy baby" it was meant to be serious instead of with the wink and accepted sillyness that we thought. I hated the Spiderday Night Fever sequence, it made me cringe. I didn't even like the Rain Drops keep falling montage in 2, so of course this really didn't sit well with me. The Mask sequence in the Jazz bar also sucked. If I was there in person I would have stood up and said, "hey, I think that guy is Spiderman!" because of all the impossible stuff he was doing. Also, how did he learn to play the piano? Did the symbiote attach itself to a piano playing alien on another planet??? I think they may need to blow it up and bring on a new director and actors, though from watching this movie, I think the perfect replacement for Tobey was already used, Topher Grace would have made a perfect Spiderman. It's a shame how things went with this series, it should have been the perfect comic book movie trilogy, but just like X3, it ended on a sour note but will make ass loads of money. I hope people don't get comic book movie fatigue though, Iron Man is looking good and I think I'll start a thread to show you guys what's going on with it. The Dark Knight was filming in Chicago a couple of weeks back and they filmed an interesting bank robbery sequence that was being carried out by the Joker.
I'm in the "It was good, not great" camp. Some of the action was good, a lot of cheesy dialogue, but come on, it's a comic book movie. Cheesy dialogue is to be expected. As others noted, the jazz bar crap was WAY over the top, as was the Saturday Night Fever stuff (albeit funny, but didn't really fit the rest of the movie). I do have a question, though: Spoiler Why is it that when Mary Jane is breaking up with Peter on the bridge, she doesn't just tell Peter right then that Harry has his memory back and has turned evil? I mean, she knows he is spiderman, and no one has a gun to her head, so why not let the cat out of the bag and she can then let Peter save her if Harry starts some crap out there in the park. It just seemed like Mary Jane was much too willing to just do whatever Harry told her, just because he has a glider and can look mean. I don't care how pissed off she was at Peter at the time.
well, that Pirates record didn't last long.... 'Spider-Man 3' claims All Time Opening Weekend record... $59 million opening day (my share in the midnight showing) and $148 million for the weekend, impressive now counting down the days when someone hits $200 mil in a weekend, which I would predict to go down in the next 5 years.... btw, who thinks that Pirates 3 won't make nearly as much as the second one? I swear the marketing on it is weak, probably banking on not needing it cause of what they did last year, but I'll be the first to admit, I haven't even watched the first 2.
For what it's worth, Wikipedia (yeah I know...) says that the original intent was to split this movie into two parts. I'm worried that Venom won't be back for fear of the studio finding another movie with him redundant, the same reason Harry doesn't officially become the Green Goblin. But man, Topher really did a fine job with Eddie, and even the couple of zingers he had with the symbiote. It's a shame we didn't get to see some of the classic scenes from the comics (Venom intimidating MJ, beating up Black Cat to send a message (they could have subbed in Doc Connors or someone there) and showing up at Aunt May's house.
While I definitely think Spidey 2 is the best of the series...and after the setup it delivered in the end, Spidey 3 most clearly failed. I still liked the third installment though, but it just didn't measure up...it didn't have the same flow or tone of the first two and just came off a little too over-the-top, too cheesy, too campy at times and not emotional enough. I really didn't feel connected to the characters until Spoiler Peter hit MJ in the bar...in fact from that moment on the movie was really good, but everything before that was just ok Not quite as a dissapointment as X3 was but definitely didn't build on the first two. Probably too many villains as well...Venom probably should have been a setup for a 4th film as the story would have done just fine if not been better off just focusing on Parker's inner demons, Harry and Sandman.
I don't think it will for a lot of reasons, but it should still hit somewhere in the $110 range for the weekend which would still make it successful: 1) POTC2 didn't leave most people wanting more and it was not as good as the first to the general consensus. 2) SM3 took the movie excitement out of a lot of people. There hasn't been anything really big for a while and everyone who needed their big summer movie fix got satiated on Spidey. 3) The publicity and advertising for pirates (and shrek) have been very poor. Spidey was everywhere and they merchandised and advertised the hell out of it. Shrek and Pirates are only just starting to bust out the advertising in full force, but they haven't had enough exposure. Sure, people who watched Pirates 2 know its coming out, but disney hasn't given people a good reason to come out and see it.
got back from watching it would give it an low B. too many story lines to juggle and it didnt really give time for any one to develop well. too many corny sequences (the bar, the walk on the street, american flag) that did not fit in. Harry's butler of course. Spoiler the thing that ticked me off the most though was the destruction of eddie brock and the symbiote. it doesnt even allow a set up for a sequel to have on spiderman's most recognizable and liked villian. the lack of venom in the movie made it bad, they probably should have gone up to the part where the symbiote bonds with brock and left venom for another movie. heck i dont even think they mentioned his name i was quite dissapointed to say the least i enjoyed the first two quite a bit hopefully the rest of summers major movies live up to the hype
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7-U57DfHCo I coulda sworn Maguire was using some of his dance moves in the jazz club scene from this .swf file. i wanted to die after watching him dance in there. sheesh. and gwen stacey. yowzers she was hot!
I enjoyed it. My son enjoyed it. I don't know where it ranks among the other 3 in my mind, because they were all good.
