I thought in the original comic, the astronaut died in the only scene he was in (an no, there wasn't anything to do with MJ).

The hardest part about introducing Venom would be getting a character with the proper motivation to fill the suit.

The animated series from the mid-90's did a fantastic job of adapting Venom, and in my opinion outdid his original origin in the comics. Instead of just having Brock appear out of the blue with little buildup, the animated series made Brock a major character from the beginning of the show, and thoughout the first season we see how Spider-Man screws up his life several times. They even gave him reason to dislike Peter Parker as they were rival photographers.

Thus far in the movie franchise, the only character that could have fit well in that role was Harry Osborn, but they are staying true to the comics and it appears he is

    *SPOILERS*

taking up the mantle of the Green Goblin in the next film. HOWEVER, as some of you have mentioned, John Jameson now has great reason to hate Peter Parker - he stole his wife! Throw in the fact that he was helpless and had to watch SPIDER-MAN save her and you have reason for him to hate both identities.

It's also interesting to note that in the animated series, it was John Jameson that brought the symbiote to Earth instead of Spider-Man finding it on another planet.

I wouldn't mind it at all if they strayed from the comics and made John Jameson into Venom. Losing your wife to Spider-Man is a lot more personal than getting scooped by him. Throw in the fact that his own father has dedicated his life to defaming Spider-Man and you have potential for a decent enough future sequel.

Sadly, I've read secondhand accounts that Raimi is dead set against using Venom in the series. I haven't been able to find a direct quote on that, and it does seem suspect considering they took the time to write in and cast Eddie Brock in the first film...

But I'm getting way ahead of myself here. I PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY that Raimi and company stay with the franchise past the third film and beyond. It would be a crime against humanity for another director and cast to step in after them and let what happened to the Batman franchise happen to Spidey.

Speaking of Batman, anyone else picking up a vibe from the Burton movies in the Spidey series? Aside from Danny Elfman scoring all of them, both first films had giant cartoony balloons and in Octavius is intoduced in a way that you feel sorry for him much like the Penguin in Batman Returns. The two villains also have water hideouts.

Maybe I'm reading to much into it.

I assume Raimi will eventually leave the Spider-man universe. The trick will be getting someone who has respect for the material like Raimi does. There are other people out there who could take up the mantle and not screw up the series like happened in Batman (I mean, it's not taking bringing Burton back to apparently get Batman back on track).

I see it too. Both directors, at the time they were chosen, weren't known as huge summer blockbuster guys. Also, in Returns, you saw the movie become more "Burtony" as it took a huge leap further into weirdness. With Spidey 2, we saw more "Raiminess" as I mentioned earlier with the Doc Ock ER scene that was just screaming Evil Dead.

I wonder what a James Cameron Spider-Man movie would've looked like. I recall he was going to do the project at one point in the past, but the rights couldn't get worked out, so he moved on.

    Saw Spiderman 2 last night.

Thought it was spectacular! It starts off good and improves to being excellent.

First wow I've seen in a long time! Also, the first movie to earn it's full ticket price since The Matrix.

Personally, I think James Cameron would make it better.

$192 million through 7 days. Wow.

I keep hearing that Kevin Smith is a big Spider-man fan and wants to get involved in the series. I have my reservations about him though. Although I know he's a big comics fan, i'm just not sure how well he can handle an action oriented film.

I doubt he'd ever try to direct it, though he might like to be involved on the writing end. But, as evidenced by his giving up directing The Green Hornet, I can't imagine he'd go for Spider-Man.

Plus, I can't imagine Columbia would give it to him.

I thought he'd do the Green Hornet as a way to see if he could handle action flicks, but yeah, he seemed pretty uncofortable. It's my understanding though, that all directors have some help when it comes to action scenes.

Kevin Smith needs to prove he can finish a Spider-Man comic book on time before he's given the honor of doing a movie. His Black Cat mini-series is two years overdue.

Are you talking about "Evil that Men Do" (i've only read the first issue), or something else?

Yeah, it's been stalled at issue three or four long enough to make even Joe Madureira or Rob Liefeld blush.

He was set to take over the writing chores on Amazing Spider-Man IIRC, but didn't have enough time with all his film projects.

That would explain why there isn't a graphic novel of it available. The only thing I remember is that I really injoyed the artwork from that first issue, especially Felecia Hardy/Black Cat in the shower.:D

while you're at it, ask him where he is on Fletch 3! :D

i think this guy gets more projects rumored to be associated with his name than any guy in the industry!

Sorry to enter this conversation late. I just saw Spider-Man 2, and I thought it was great!

Anyone remember this picture I posted last year?

This was part of a stunt they filmed on my street. Remember the scene in the movie where Peter tries to jump off the roof to test his powers (and ends up falling and hitting a couple cars)? That's the scene they filmed in the picture.

The bright brick building they show in the background (repeatedly) as he's running across the roof is my apartment building! My wife and I had a good laugh about that.

    Just thought I'd share.
