That was me all last year on Yainer. I'm driving that bandwaggon brother. The 100's of people that have listened can testify- no bigger Yainer or Hunter Brown (or Whitley) fan exists than I.

IF you look at his stats from the minors (much like LMJ) they are very underwhelming. Those guys might have a lot in common. I think LMJ could have been an ace if he stayed healthy (he came close in 21)

His stuff is certainly good enough to be frontline if he locates consistently. Even with his inconsistency his whiff rate and xBA are both in the top quarter of the league, he can miss bats.

But that's a tale as old as the sport itself and has been said about thousands of pitchers before him, can he maintain consistent command. If he does we may have something. Too early for me to have any confidence he will, but these last few starts have been amazing.

He has surprised me to say the least and boy did we need this!!!! His last 2 outings have been magical, I just want to see if can be consistent, just 6 quality innings is good enough for me, the strikeouts are the cherry on top

This is crazy talk...is it possible that Yainer learned some things from Maldy last year? Is is possible that Yainer was not ready to catch a MLB roatation? Hell if I know. I love him as our catcher now.

Everything publicly that I witnessed and heard privately about Maldy said he is in no way shape or form a mentor to the younger guys at the catcher position. I don't buy it. My hatred of Maldonado is such that I'm not a rational person when it comes to analyzing him though. So, who knows. I know the pitchers and Presley's mom loved him. And Dusty. Even though all their numbers were better pitching to Yainer. But who can overvalue comfort, even when said comfort results in worse numbers for the team in both runs scored and runs allowed? As long as they are comfortable as a fan that's my priority numbero uno.

Right, if you were going to throw the "comfort factor" out the window, you would have cut Maldy in the winter and signed a (like we did with Caratini) quality veteran to ease Diaz into it. Giving Diaz a whole offeason as C1 seems to have worked out.

Pitchers are total weirdos and creatures of habit, and I tend to listen to them, for better or worse.

I tend to ignore them unless what they say has some iota of showing up in the numbers in some way. Other than that I'm about as interested in hearing what they think about the composition of the org in general or the lineup in particular as I am in taking my childrens input into how the family runs (they are 13, 11 & 9). I might as the question to gauge overall thoughts and feelings or their perceptions but I'm going to rule, at all times, as a benevolent dictator. If you are a HOF in waiting guy I will grudgingly allow you to select your own personal valet to play personal catcher 1 out of every 5 days. As long as you pitch like a HOFer still (so go ahead and put your hand back down JV- you don't count anymore).

The Maldy “intangibles” brainwashing runs deep and roots itself with evil, sprawling tentacles. Astonishingly, there are a few fans left that still can’t exercise that demon.

Yeah, I think you would have to rank them first based on your stats criteria and then make the groupings based on that.

The other problem is what do you do with guys like Chris Sale? He’s been arguably the best pitcher in baseball this year but this is the first time he’s been healthy all season in awhile. Not sure how durability factors into this. Do you consider a guy an ace when it’s such a question of whether he will actually be healthy (Sale, Degrom, etc.)?

    6/26-7/28, 6 games, 4.24 ERA, 3.99 xFIP, 18.9% K%-BB%
    7/29-8/12, 2 games, 2.08 ERA, 1.07 xFIP, 46.8% K%-BB%

The 6 preceding games were okay to good. The last 2 were solid great (this may be an understatement as that K%-BB% may be the best mark in 2 consecutive starts this year). Mixing in 6 games of okay to good with the last 2 games still looks great.

Burnes is “showing potential”? Lol he’s consistently been one of the best in baseball and has a CYA to his name.

Having Luis Gil on that list is pretty wild too. Especially when Kirby and Gilbert aren’t included. Ragans needs to be under showing potential if Imanaga is there. And Zach Wheeler probably should be an ace.

If he really was such a good teacher and had crazy intangibles to help young players out, the White Sox probably wouldn’t have cut him.

Those 6 starts were great for what you asked him to do.

Spaghetti has exceeded my expectations (perhaps they were just too low). the fact that this thread even exists now is great fortune given how he started

Do you think Yainer learned nothing from Maldy? Nothing?

I think Diaz should’ve been the starter by early may 2023 and he could’ve still learned from Maldy. After that interview where Maldy was obviously throwing shade at Diaz, I haven’t been too sure that Maldy was helping Diaz at all. And if Dusty was trying to bring Diaz along properly, why did Yainer never get to catch our best pitchers even once?

    That whole situation was embarrassing.

You're not wrong, but they should have started that in ST. They didn't. Could have started it in June...didn't.

I never said I liked one or the other, I just knew what was going to happen so I didn't b**** about things that could not be controlled like you did. "Accept the Inevitable" or somesuch.
