IS LaFreantz a better defender than Cato?
I would have thought that he was - he might not be as strong, but at least he TRIES to play D - plus he's a better shotblocker than Cato AND a better rebounder. I'd like to see him as our starting C over Kelvin any day of the week - when we need a stronger defender we can just roll Collier out there to lean his big frame on them.

Despite the clash that management has with Raef, they aren't just going to give him up for nothing (ie Wiz, KT, Cato). With the number of teams that have absolutely nothing at the 5, Raef will demand a higher price than you may expect. He's no Shaq, but he's also not Kelvin.

Unless Krause & company are running the Nugs as well, I don't think this would realistically happen unless we could also throw in Bull.

    Thanks Matt...for everything

Betting on Kelvin Cato's potential is much like expecting Dan Quayle to make a political come back...

If the rumor that I read in another thread about Spree going to Sacramento is true, then we might want to consider forgetting about Webber. If that's the case, then we have a lot of cap space to use & taking on Abdul-Wahad's contract would not be a problem. We could use him as the backup SG or turn around & trade him to Miami later. Riley likes defensive minded players any way & might be interested. I'd do the deal if Denver were open to it.

So, the centers that could possibly be available are Marc Jackson, Brad Miller, LaFrentz, A.Davis, D.Davis, Bryant Reeves, Dream, Ewing, & whomever else I'm forgetting about.

Which of these guys would be the perfect fit & long term solution? What could the one do that makes him a better choice than the others? And finally, what would we have to give to get him? Any ideas?

    Nugzfan -
If the Rockets decide LaFrentz is the answer, they won't have to offer you a trade at all. They can just wait until next season when LaFrentz is a "Qualifying Offer" FA.

If the Rockets don't sign Chis Webber, Walt Williams' contract expiration is just about enough to make it happen in 2002. The Nuggets only have 5 contracts for 2002 plus options on Posey & Radojevic, so they need servicable players and some picks. (Bet you weren't too excited about the draft).

If any of the following happen - Dream signs a 2 year deal at a reasonable price or the Rockets can deal Cato to another team, I would get ready for a bidding war. If LaFrentz is truly not high on Issel's list, it's better to deal him while you can get something for him.

Then again, if Dream plays contract hardball with the Rockets this season and doesn't sign (Wizards perhaps), LaFrentz is as good as gone in 2002-2003.

Raef to Rocks - only a matter of time.

Raef's ability to play the perimeter game (shotting three's) also will help by pulling Shaq and other shot blockers out of the lane (or letting him shoot open 3's which is ok as well). That somewhat offsets any defensive liabilities he may have (which I 'm not too sure exist since he is a good interior shot blocking presence), as well as whatever protection (defensively) the zone may provide. As for his availability, Issel hates LaFrentz and if he sits him again this year like he did for stretches last year, his value will plummet. Keep in mind its Issel trading Raef, not NugzFan, so picks and a couple of players may well do it. God I hope he'll take Cato.

If we pick up LaFrentz,I sure would want Webber alongside him.Like HS just mentioned,he pulls the bigman away from the basket. He is a deceptively good defender, but I wouldn't want to team him up with MoTay.We'd be hurting for a post up game and there is the matter of having an eraser at one of those positions.Don't get me wrong I like Raef....He's proven to be much better than I initially thought.

Yes,he was HS.Now,this is just a thought, but do you think the presence of McDyess might have helped boost that a bit?

A few quotes from the popular press:

"It was an 0-for-7, five-foul performance that caused Issel to verbally lambast LaFrentz after Sunday's 104-102 loss at Boston. The Nuggets were upset that the 6-11, 240-pound forward was singled out for his poor play and the team did not show up for Monday's practice." CNNSI

"This isn't a one-time deal, it's a thing that has happened my entire (Nuggets) career...he tears me down as a person."
"Now, whether or not things are fixed, we'll see." Rocky Moutain something or other

"With his team consistently getting off to poor starts, Nuggets coach Dan Issel removed center Raef LaFrentz and shooting guard Tariq Abdul-Wahad from the starting lineup last weekend and replaced them with Keon Clark and Voshon Lenard." BasketballNews.com

"As a coach, Issel promises to yell more behind the closed doors of harder practices, and embarrass his players less in public by staying calmer over their mistakes against the Lakers or Knicks. "Yeah, he says that, but Dan Issel is always an intense person ... He's still going to be a nut at times during games when we're not playing well," center Raef Lafrentz said." Denver Post.

That doen't sound like a great relationship to me.

Because it's bogus. Not legit. Never happen. LaFrentz may be traded, and Issel is an idiot, but not even he'd be that stupid.

Also, NugzFan, don't speak so fast about LaFrentz and Issel not hating each other.

That said, LaFrentz will be back, and should be a member of the team for at the very least part of the season. By then, Issel will be fired, and LaFrentz will be re-signed.

Wasn't Raef in the top ten in blocks last year? Even with limited minutes?

I hope any package to get LaFrentz includes Cisse in the deal. With Cisse on the Rockets, keeping MoTay (for a reasonable salary)is more viable. With Cisse, what was once a weakness becomes a strength. With Cisse, the shotblocking and rebounding alone is increased dramatically, especially teamed w/Dream and Griffen.

Cisse is a beast at both ends of the court. And he is a big man who possesses the energy of a guard. The biggest downside is his knee, but w/his work ethic that should be neglible.

your already throwing more into your side of the deal? geez, so far you guys are offering cato, thomas, 2nd rounders, and other 'non-valuble' stuff, and yet you want more? um...ok?
