and this is KILLING dallas! it's killing their tax base. same thing happened in Detroit. have you seen Detroit? as for bigtexx's comments on racism. remember...dallas is the city whose mayor once bragged that it "missed" desegregation. that it just flew right by it.
I always love these debates about Houston vs. Dallas, especially since I frequent Dallas and Houston boards. I drive around Houston sometimes and am glad I left there. So congested. A big blob of humanity. Humidity that makes you sweaty when it's 75 outside. The city just seems dirty now that I don't live there anymore. If it weren't for maybe NASA and the Astrodome, it wouldn't be known for much. I drive around Dallas and think... this city is so bland. Everything about it is so sterile. If it weren't for the Cowboys and a dead president, it wouldn't be known for much. It all boils down to this : Houston and Dallas both suck.
Read the latest Texas Monthly Max, Dallas gets flogged like a red-headed step-child in an article named "Wimpy Dallas". Houston is used as an example as to how far behind Dallas is in the Metropolitan and Leadership arena. The article centers around their administrative woes, using City Managers and heavy handed, closed door city councils and weak, figure-head Mayors. However, I will soon be moving back to the DFW area, but will be working in downtown Ft Worth and living 10 minutes from the office-YES! A Little girl that I went to the University of North Texas with, resident of Ft Worth and future Mrs. Wouldabeen, will soon be receiving a new diamond at a..*GULP*..Cowboys game this year-I think I just threw up in my mouth. I will say this, her credentials are in order even though she is a rabid Cowboy fan because one of her favorite shirts reads "Life is Too Short to Live in Dallas!". Ft Worth is a hip city, it's like Austin but not as crowded with better freeways and a good balance of Arts/Cultural districts, Cowtown for the western folks and urban night-life. Consequently, it was one of the FEW places in the metroplex that I frequently saw Kerry presidential bumperstickers and yard signs...
I really like Fort Worth too. When I was dating the law school girl, I wanted her to get a job in Houston first, Fort Worth second, Austin third. When she clerked up there, we had a great time every night out.
i guess i'll add on... duke... errrr... dallas sucks. edit... forgot about the rest... i lived there for a year starting in 2000 when they had that record number of days in the 100 degrees. sucked donkey balls. snowed that winter. hmmm. nothing much to the city. just a poor man's houston.
That was 1998 - the year I moved here. It was 29 straight days of 100 degree heat. I was driving around with the windows rolled down and would get home and see it was 101-103 degrees. Funny, it didn't feel like it. But then there was that Sunday when it got to 113 and my car was parked outside. Jesus. Black car, black leather interior, and 113 degree temperature. I drove the car for about 20 feet before I realized I couldn't hold the steering wheel. I pulled over, rolled the windows down, turned the AC on, pointed the vents at the steering wheel, got out, and waited 5 minutes. I could drive again... The only thing I hate about Dallas is there's very little diversity unless you go looking for it, whereas in Houston, it was pretty much all around you. That being said, I'm glad I can escape "the city" in Dallas whereas in Houston the monster was everywhere you went unless you drove 50-75 miles out or something. They each have their good and bad and I just find it hysterical that people sit here arguing about it like they built the damn cities or something. Some of the stupidest arguments boil down to stuff like "yeah?! well our traffic is worse than your traffic" or "oh yeah?!? it's hotter here than it is there, so take that!" If you ask me, people in both cities have inferiority complexes or something.
oh yeah? well at least we don't have these two guys from this thread. not sure about 98 since i hadn't moved there by then, but 2000 must have been just as hot. 45 straight days in the 100s. that's crazy! i remember watching the news and hearing about old people w/o good ac dying and stuff. our diversity may be a bit better than y'alls, but it's not like it's anything to brag about. maybe it's because i moved from houston, to dallas, to ATLANTA (one of the most diverse cities in the world, imo), then back here.
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Well Dallas is a jewel, oh yeah, Dallas is a beautiful sight. And Dallas is a jungle but Dallas gives a beautiful light. Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Well, Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down. But when you are up, she's the kind you want to take around. But Dallas ain't a woman to help you get your feet on the ground. Yes Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down. Well, I came into Dallas with the bright lights on my mind, But I came into Dallas with a Dollar and a dime. Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eye A steel and concrete soul with a warm hearted love disguise A rich man who tends to believe in his own lies Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eye
That's 45 days, not straight days. In 1998 there were 56 total. http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/reports/texas98/texasrecords.html#100 Either way, it was pretty damn hot in Texas in 1998. lol. Amazingly, from the link above, it seems 1980 was even hotter.
I now have lived in Houston and Dallas for about equal portions of my life. I take Dallas for the weather over Houston. I take Houston for the people, the Rockets, the Texans and the Astros. I'd love to live somewhere other than Dallas or Houston, however (echoing Dr. of Dunk's comments). There is plenty to do in both cities. There are some great areas of Dallas that are very enjoyable. Lower Greenville Avenue for one.....lots of places to go and see and do. Things are a bit more laid back down there, and it's fun. I do despise the fairweather Dallas fans and all the 35k millionaires that comb the city for the gold digging women that are 10k in debt after paying for their chest with their Visa cards. But I digress. I would also like to add that Ft. Worth is NOT like Austin. They don't call it Cowtown for the hell of it.
i'm saying there are factors beyond those which you can see through the windshield which might be more important.
