Hey worm holes! That's how you get from one planet to another quickly. Cann't believe you guys don't watch star gate series!
for what it's worth , I'm reading camouflage, by joe haldeman right now. I'll let you know after I finish.
Given the history of human civilization when encountered with the unknown, I'd say society would be in an uproar, especially if those who previously thought otherwise realized that the entire universe doesn't actually revolve around them.
If the US military is starting to look at using hyperdrive technology; what about a alien society thousands or millions of years more advanced than us?
Just got through reading this- http://www.newscientistspace.com/ar...hyperspace.html What a trip! I hope it leads to something. Thanks for the read. Keep D&D Civil.
One thing I'd truly want to do before I die would be to take a trip in space. I think its definitely possible if Time permits....
will we even have a planet to leave by the time we discover any other new planets? At the rate were going, we will destroy ourselves.
Just pay a couple hundred thousand dollars and virgin galactic will give you a 5 minute ride in space. Pay a few million and the Russians will let you stay at the ISS for a few days.
The thing that I think about goes something like this: (Now, I'm not even 100% sure about what I'm talking about, so I might not make any sense, or it might not have any truth to it ) Anyways, if some intelligent extra-terrestrial being were to reach Earth, they would either: A.) Have to have a VERY LONG life span, as travelling here would take a very long time, or B.) Have the technology to travel faster than light. With this said, even if there is another planet out there that is able to sustain life, it would have to be, in a way, even better-suited than Earth to sustain life so that its beings would be capable of insanely long life-spans. That, or these beings would have to be that well adapted. Either way, I think it's highly unlikely. The more likely situation is situation B: Some form of VERY intelligent beings create a space shuttle that travels faster than light, getting it here, quickly. With this said, if this space ship set out from it's planet travelling faster than life, when would it get here? Seemingly, since it's travelling faster than light, it seems like it would get here in the past. Would it be here in 1990, 1900, 1890, B.C. Times, or what about during the prehistoric ages? With that said, there is some very small percentage chance that if there does exist life outside of Earth, that it has before made landfall here, but it was before modern history, language and all. If this happened, there truly would be no form of communication to describe it (unless of course, that is the birth of all monster myths). In all probability, if something like this did happen, the dinosaurs would have been the only ones to see it. After all that, I hope I made some sort of sense....
Actually, when you move at (or faster than) the speed of light, you would move forward in time, not backward (according to Einstein). Traveling backward in time would require moving at a negative speed, which isn't physically possible (unless you're Chuck Norris).
I think A is more likely for a couple of reasons. We've got the technology to freeze living cells now and then thaw them out and still have them viable. We've found whole organisms that can survive the freezing process and no that even higher organisms like Bears can hibernate. It seems very possible that we will figure out how to put someone in cryogenic stasis and then revive them later so if you could freeze someone and put them on a thousand year trip without too much trouble providing the technology to thaw them out still worked. You're essentially extending their lifetimes indefinately. The other reason is that there isn't a law that limits organic lifespans. We know that trees can live for thousands of years but even higher lifeforms like turtles can live for hundreds of years. It seems more likely that biologically there could exist an intelligent lifeform with a thousand plus year life span. OTOH travel faster than light while theoretically possible according to known physics requires energy input beyond anything we could think of. It would require a whole different understanding of physics to be able to that in a controlled manner.
