    Oh whoops - I worded that badly. :) I meant if you live anywhere, you pay taxes of another sort (property taxes, whether directly or through rent). But I guess there are also states that probably don't have a property tax too!

    Yes and the latest round of tax cuts greatly hurt how much the govt. is spending and how little it is taking in.

    [Aside from the ridiculous tax argument]
    Lol, it's never okay with my to call someone a hypocrite. Everyone has engaged in hypocrisy at some point in their lives, so to accuse someone else of being a hypocrite is an hypocrisy made exponential by the irony.[/Aside]

    Instapundit notes this (proposed) law is irrelevant to the health care mandate because in America, states aren't limited to enumerated powers as Congress is.

    Agreed - the whole SD law missed the point. The better example would be George Washington signing the Militia Act of 1792, which required all able men to buy a gun.

    So the idea that the Founding Fathers didn't intend something of this sort REALLY falls flat now.

    That every citizen, so enrolled and notified, shall, within six months thereafter, provide himself with a good musket or firelock, a sufficient bayonet and belt, two spare flints, and a knapsack, a pouch, with a box therein, to contain not less than twenty four cartridges, suited to the bore of his musket or firelock, each cartridge to contain a proper quantity of powder and ball; or with a good rifle, knapsack, shot-pouch, and powder-horn, twenty balls suited to the bore of his rifle, and a quarter of a pound of powder;

    Yes so we have multiple laws passed and signed by the framers of the constitution who all knew the intent of the constitution who believed it was acceptable for the Federal govt. make private citizens purchase goods or even insurance.

    The people who wrote the constitution believed it was constitutional. I guess some people no longer wish to follow the original intent.

    And we are required to pay taxes to cover that expense. That is equivalent to the Health Care law that requires us to purchase insurance. If this mandatory gun law were equivalent then the Health Care law would require us all to go to med school so we could provide our own health care.

    Also a mandatory gun law does nothing to help the fire department.

    That would be like if my house burned down I would receive more from my insurance company than I put in. The point here is that taxes to cover things like fire dept and police, even welfare, are like insurance in terms of spreading the risk.

    I'm going to side with John Adams, George Washington and other people who were there and signed the constitution itself. I believe they know best what the framers had in mind.

    Or you could side with all these constitutional law professors who are also siding with John Adams, George Washington, and other founding fathers who signed the Constitution and believed the Federal govt. had the authority to mandate citizens purchase insurance or other goods.

    Frankly that is a terrible Constitutional law professor who thinks that states aren't limited to enumerated powers as otherwise the states could still have things like slavery.
