I melted them down and made a giant replica of my penis. You're welcome to hop on it and keep riding my piece cup cake.

So can we finally stop debating and discussing on whether or not there is a problem, and start debating and discussing possible solutions? Or will this disappear as soon as the next big headline presents itself?

I think the cameras on cop measures are a good start. I also think the idea of a cop firing 8 bullets at a suspect goes to show that maybe training isn't necessarily spot on either. The problem we face is the standard in which cops are held and the money allocated to police departments is not the same accross the board. It's like the education system, some areas are better and some are worse. The problem that occurs is that the areas that are worse bread discontent amongst the masses and the good cops eventually get a bad rap. I'm not sure how that gets fixed.

Body cams should be mandatory and controlled by dispatch. If the camera is ever tampered with or disabled during an interaction with a citizen the officer should be immediately fired.

Officers like the one in this story, should be given the death penalty.

Well, I think so. Just because he sometimes trolls the leftist mob here and just because you might disagree with him on stuff doesn't mean he is not an intelligent and reasonable poster. But that is not what the thread is about.

I agree with that. When you are given more responsibility the consequences should be the most severe. There's no excuse in this officer shooting that man who was running away from him.

Just out of curiosity, how would you guys assess the situation if the officer had shot the fleeing man once in the leg so that he could apprehend him (instead of 8 times in the back, probably with an intent to kill)?

It's not OK to shoot somebody over child support payments, IMO.

    Agree with your first statement.

I dunno about the death penalty.

I don't support shooting someone without the intent to kill so IMO the gun shouldn't have been used at all. The guy had a taser he should have run after the guy and tased him.

    This is sad and disgusting.

I've said this time and time again in gun threads, but there are plenty of effective but non-deadly weapons that can be used in place of guns, by both officers and people (who claim they want to protect their homes).

I mean I read once about a "gun" that emits super high frequency sonic wave or something like that that immediately nauseates whoever it is pointed at.

I'm not suggesting that, but just pointing out there are lots of options.. and would be A TON more options if it was more commercially viable...

The sad thing is that if this was not on video, no one would know what really happened likely. That said, this officer is going to be made an example of, and he is going to (deservedly) fry.

It's a POS like this that is going to cause a problem for the next cop that actually needs to use deadly force in a reasonable situation. If I am a cop nowadays, I refuse to go out without a camera on me at all times to at least hope it captures the decisions that are made.

I don't think the cop knew why the person was running away, so my question is more generic in nature:

If someone is stopped by a cop and then, rather than identifying himself, runs away, what do you think is appropriate for the cop to do:

    - run after him, tell him to stop (I guess everyone would agree that this is still appropriate)
    - if he can't catch him: just let him go or try to stop him by shooting him in the leg (if there is a reasonable assumption that the person running away must have committed a crime - why else would he run?)

Again, this is not about this particular case - I agree with everyone else that the cop used excessive force, probably had an intent to kill and should face criminal charges.

Have you ever heard the saying "You can out-run me, but you can't out-run my Motorola"? He should have run after him and called it in. If he could get close enough to use his taser, then that's what you do. If not, you rely on help from other officers. Most people don't make it far and that guy didn't look like he could run very fast.
