The Rockets backed out of signing Charlie Villanueva because they are talking to Antoine Walker.

Agreed, for the right price spreads the floor and is a good enough overall scorer to give us good minutes at the PF position. Can be considered soft as Snuggles on the boards, but in ways is a more complete offensive player than our current power forwards. ;)

On a side note being a UConn alum like someone else we are rumored to be after; that being Ray Allen maybe this signing will help our chances.

No but it to me it means that the Kevin Love trade which leaked today changed our plans. Some other downstream impact of that trade must be better for us than CV.

People overreact to every little thing here.

This summer, the overreaction take the form of complaining about minor free agent signings, even minimum wage ones with pretty much no effect on what the Rockets can pursue even in the immediate future. Ish Smith, Joey Dorsey and Jeff Adrien's signings have all been used as a basis for complaining about how the Rockets failed to land a bigger-named player even though these signings have almost zero impact on the Rockets' cap situation.

There is nothing to complain about even with an actual signing of Charlie V, let along one that the team allegedly backed out of, without knowing the actual contracts offered to him.

The only interesting part of this is why the Rockets "backed out" of the deal, at least "for now" as cyberx said. Did they receive worrying information about an injury that they need to have a doctor check out before moving forward? Were they planning on using a part of the MLE or the BAE but then another free agent showed interest in joining the team that would require the use of the same exception? Were they working on a major trade that would have impacted, one way or another, their desire to sign Charlie V (like one that would have sent out a big or have one coming in) and something is going on with the trade?

maybe we are waiting to sign someone else before committing to him..this is a bit unprofessional if daryl really did this. maybe the love trade changed our plans

My guess is they are waiting till phx gets there stuff together from the fall out of the love deal. Dmo or Jones maybe on there way out in a coming trade.

Only 20 roster spots guys. With us retaining rights to Garcia and Hamilton, we've got 19 guys with one one open spot right now. I'm pretty sure we're going to sign CV once all the smoke clears and we have made our trade(s) and signed our other free agents.....as long as nobody else offers him a multi-year above-the-minimum contract.

But right now we need the roster spot for trade flexibility.

Good point. cyberx said "for now".

Either way, CV strikes me as a project type move, similar to Casspi. Very little risk, and if he turns it around then you've got a good player on a cheap contract.

Teams aren't limited to 20 player rosters until training camp begins.

Low risk, low reward. Hope he works hard if he comes here. That is the only thing I am concerned about. We don't need slackers around our young guys.

The guy barely played last season. Was he injured? Heck, has he been "injured" for the last 3 seasons?

Signing Villanueva will make up for the loss of three productive players (Parsons, Lin, Asik)

I doubt that was the mindset leading up to this.

He was injured a couple of seasons and also fell out of favor with coaches and fans. Not a bad player, just never realized he isn't "THE" player.

You want to sign Charlie Villanueva to play SF? Opposing SFs would drop 1.98 points per possession against him and he would kill our offense.

Typical Morey move, low risk high reward. I doubt our GM was willing to give him more than the Min. Take him to training camp and see if he can make the team worst case scenario cut him, same as we did we Casspi last year. Casspi didn't pan out but he played well in training camp and made the cut. We easily got rid of him and if he pans out he becomes an asset come next year. What is interesting though is why they back out? CH points out some interesting thoughts.

Hard to believe he was a 7th overall pick less than 10 years ago. Has been going down hill fast, not that the hill was very high. He used to be a decent backup for a bad team.

remember his 50 pt game in his rookie yr? seems like a looooong time ago.

i wouldnt mind him coming in and playing the stretch 4 at times when we are dealing with injuries...he can get hot and keep us in some games.
