Buy him out? You mean stretch his contract i guess, well, that would be bad cause his contract would cost us less per year but i don't even know for how many years we would have him on the books...if that wasn't a problem we would've stratched Anderson in the first place since he had one year less on the books. The guys we would trade for him are expiring in one and a half year, Knight has also a chance to become decent value once he steps on the floor again. As for the taxes well, it's not like you have to care, no one here should in fact, but you have to know he's not going to do that for a mediocre bench player if he didn't for Ariza. It's just about being realistic.
I am realistic. The team as it sits now will not win a championship. Why pay CP3 30 million a year if we aren’t in win now mode. You go all in for the next two years then minimize the luxury tax bill later. If he cared that much about taxes he shoulda traded CP3 and Capela. Why would you not make the trade to get Jimmy. CP is not getting younger and our Window is closing fast. We are trying to beat arguably the greatest team in NBA history and pinching pennies is not the way to do that.
I agree with you that we're probably not going to win as today, but Chris Paul is an hall of fame caliber player, you're willing to pay more money for him, same for Butler, for Dieng probably not, and that's understandable. I have to say though, that if we would be able to keep a couple of picks for taking back Dieng, his contract might be easier to dump going forward, i'm just not sure there's a middle ground in this scenario...i mean, for what we know at this point: - Rockets want to get Butler for picks, Knight, Chriss but keep Gordon - Wolves want to get Gordon and picks for Butler, maybe unload Dieng too (personally i'm not sure this is the case but just my guess) I guess a middle ground here would be Gordon and at least a couple of picks to Minnie with Dieng staying there, or Houston taking back Dieng while keeping Gordon, but in this scenario we would've to add other players to match the salaries we would take back so, yeah, Gordon would've to be included, or Tucker with Nene...but so far seems like neither team is willing to do that.
So many fail to get this: If we take on Dieng's contract there's no way we have money to retain Butler which negates the whole reason for the trade. We've already paid Harden, Paul, and Capela. Butler wants the max. I'm not a capologist but if we pay Butler and Dieng in addition to the three guys we just gave huge contracts to I expect Fertitta would be looking at largest luxury tax ever. This is the whole point of involving third team.
Only reason why i'm quoting this is because of capologist lol. I didn't know it was an actual word, let a long a profession. Learn something new every day.
In my trade scenario we traded Gordon and NeNe for Dieng. How can we afford to pay Butler if we don’t take on Dieng then? Both Gordon and NeNe are under contracts next year. So we will still be looking at the exact same luxury tax and then we would have to resign Gordon for some astronomical amount. Like I said early, I don’t care about luxury tax as a fan. Tillman needs to suck it and pay it if he wants the fans to believe in him. Either that or lower the price of some concessions. Honestly I don’t care either way how they want to make a trade work, I’m just saying we need to do something. All the moves they did this summer were soo strange in my opinion. You either resign everyone and go for it or you let players walk/trade them for assets and rebuild and they picked the worst option which was halfway going for it and now we are stuck with a team paying luxury tax with no legitimate shot at winning it all.
It's not a profession. It's a word for people that are good with understanding the rules of the salary cap.
Great. Philly are going to beat Indy in Indy, making our victory that much less impressive. I like how this thread is where I come to post random Rockets thoughts.
Let’s band aid the season together till the trade deadline then move Paul for Butler and Teague everyone is happy. Resign Butler long term.
This 1000%. Fertitta is not stupid and this is why Ryno is not on this team anymore. He will pay the tax but he is not writing a blank check for inefficiency. In no world does it make sense to pay the remaining 3 years on Dieng's contract. If he was so easy to move it would have happened already. That is why the picks are there. We cannot pick in the lottery and we don't have the minutes to give to a draftee and wait 4 or 5 years for them to pan out. Our team is a win now team and needs assets that fit that goal. We have no shot at AD against Boston's piggy bank and likely have very few better options at another star that fits us. Because of the Spurs, Kawhi was never available to us and they got exactly the assets they wanted. This is the best remaining player available to us. I still don't think we get Butler but Morey's relentless persistence is one of our greatest assets.
