So this is a one year rental? He wants big money? What about melo? I think the team the rockets have now is good enough. Gordon will do great. Tucker is untouchable.
I think you might have missed the point. Putting top players together does not guarantee anything. Okc did not have any chemistry and adding a player like JB, introduces 25% new substance to a formula that you already love. Will that change in chemistry make us better? I don't know. Are we willing to take that risk? I am on the fence.
Is this for real? Also, Morey, we gotta talk about that pic you're using. It's from a long time ago and no longer an accurate representation. It's kinda sad at this point.
Reality is that no team you can assemble is guaranteed to beat the Warriors. We'd have a great chance but could still lose. Even as great as the team would be in terms of individual players, it's certainly up in the air if they'd fit as perfectly as the Warriors do and if they'd shoot as well as the Warriors. In a 7 game series, either team could win. That said, Tilman gave you the timeline. He doesn't want to be a repeater team. That means we have two years to win a title before serious changes need to be made to the roster.
Seems to be the same general statement Morey made on Rich Eisen show yesterday. "We're always trying to add talent"
You are the one missing the point. Chemistry wasnt the problem for OKC, Carmelo no longer being a top player, then being misused and playing like a bottom player was the problem. You are sitting here telling people you can't just put top players together and using Okc as an example, when Okc only had really one top player.
You can't "balloon" over the Max, in any way, shape or form. The Max is a hard ceiling that no signing bonus, performance bonuses, etc can exceed. So, even if you do an easy-to-achieve performance bonus in year one (to create an NFL-like balloon payment year), it means you'd be signing him well below the Max...since the bonus can't take him over the Max. You can sign a Max contract with annual decreases though (but limited %, like raises). And even flat-lining a contract saves tax, since the cap will be going up each of the next few years, thus the league BRI cap would outperform the contract. Also note, even with signing bonuses, while they are paid when signed, their cap hit (and tax payments, if apply) are spread over the guaranteed years of the contract.
I don't know if it would be a rental. He said he grew up wanting to play for the Rockets and we would have his bird rights...we could sign him to whatever we want. The issue is trying to add anyone else after that would be virtually impossible other than for the MLE/vet min. He would need to be THE guy we need to go over the top for it to be worth it. Especially since we're going to have to give up a lot.
Absolutely. I tell people I know all the time I have no doubt if Chris Paul hadn’t gotten injured, we would have won THAT series. Having said that, if we played another best of 7 against them after, I would have to say Warriors would probably have taken it.
I agree that the Rox can't or won't increase their offer much from the original offer. So it comes down to these factors: * Are other teams' offers are more enticing to the T-Wolves than ours? * Do the T-Wolves actually HAVE to trade Butler before the season starts? In my thinking, the answer to the second one is a resounding YES. Butler doesn't want to be there and has let everyone know. If they don't make a deal, they risk him either not coming in at all or coming in and being a turd in the punchbowl, souring the atmosphere. Thibs has to find a way to get this team off to a decent start and remain playoff-bound or he's likely toast. So yeah, they HAVE to trade Jimmy B. That leaves the only real question being the first one: Will the Wolves like our offer better than the others? The answer to that one is... Spoiler Who the f%$k knows?
If top players don't play well together, that is not due to chemistry? Are you saying that if players get along there is one? Replacing a highly used player with another one will always have risks. More is certainly a much better option for most circumstances but that does not always hold true especially if you are happy with what you currently have.
more like Morey knows it could be a 1 year rental How are u talking in absolutes like there’s no way Jimmy would re-sign here?
Rockets should land Butler unless another team puts up a high value offer but even then our offer could be debatably just as good. Not sure what wolves are waiting for or trying to do. When this is all said and done Moreys deals grabbing knight and chriss were perfect moves for this type of situation if it goes through.
all you need to know is that Morey wholeheartedly believes that a player of Butler's caliber significantly increases the rockets chances of beating golden state. he has repeated this ad naseum - the clearest path to winning a title is by obtaining as many stars as possible. chemistry and depth and strategy can be worked on over the course of the season, but Morey and his teams research has shown that formulaically amassing star power is the best strategy towards winning a title.
