This is a serious question Is management allowed to talk to yao beforehand about the trade, thus letting him know that we want to resign him after the trade? Like "Yao, we're only trading your contract right now, but please resign with us in the summer when you become a free agent?"
Ya definitely underpaying for the time being. 1.7M over 2 years for a 7 foot big man that will be the future starting C for a long time to come. He's going to get a big raise soon.
You're not allowed to but its hard for the league to prove that you did. Over the years we've seen a lot of instances where a player gets traded, gets bought out by the team acquiring him, and then re-signed with his original team.
This move makes sense in so many ways. It sucks when you think about it but when you dig deeper it clearly becomes more and more clear that if this was the case and they were really exploring it; based on Yao's mentality and loyalty I'm hard pressed to believe he wouldn't be coming back to the Rockets after helping us get assets through his expiring contract. It's not like he is playing in games right now and killing it that we are all freaking out about trading him. We will be in line to gain some major pieces or picks to help out our team and still have Yao back at the end of the year. It would be foolish to think that Morey and Yao have not had minor discussions hinting at this option without making it obvious enough where we could have problems with the league.
Trade Yao means nothing. His chances of coming back on a Rockets uniform would not change after a trade. It is just another card for Daryl. It has no disadvantages / risks.
gotcha, like the Ilgauskas trade last year to the Wiz, thx. And yes, if this trade benefits us like the tmac trade with the possibility of getting yao back next year with very little damage to our salary cap, it's a HUGE win-win situation. Morey, you turn me on with your genius.
Dude, you got 17 mil sitting on the bench and that 17 mil hasn't played squat in the past 2 seasons. How is that disgusting?
After seeing some of the trade proposals in this thread, I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed if the trade is made. Anything is better than nothing though, so I am hopeful something happens.
If im understanding the situation correctly there are 2 things different from last years McGrady trade scenario. 1) The uncertain CBA may make some teams want to cut costs. So Yao's contract, along with its insurance, make it worth more than last years McGrady contract. 2) 2011 doesnt have anywhere near the number of star caliber free agents as 2010 did. So fewer teams are going to be going to great lengths to clear space. This part makes Yao's contract worth less than last years McGrady contract. Im not sure which influence will win out. But it makes gauging our expectations on this years Yao contract more sketchy.
I thought one of the clauses they were pushing for in the new CBA was the right to cut large, poisionus contracts. If so, wouldn't giving up assests for cap relief (in this case yao) be redundant if they could do so next year for literally nothing?
If I am not mistaken though that would go into effect after Yao has already come off the books. So doesn't matter what is going to happen in the CBA considering Yao expires this year before any of those changes go into effect. So he has value regardless.
Because there are no guarantees that will happen. No way the Union is going to agree to a new CBA where owners can cut previous contractual agreements.
Well the most obvious package would be a deal involving Aaron Brooks, PP, picks and Yao Ming for CP3. Now that the NBA owns NO, winning is probably way below their list of priorities as compared to cutting salary and getting picks and young guys to make the franchise more attractive. NO somehow winning the ring would be bad for the economy, and Yao Ming signing with NO guarantees he'll sign with another team (hopefully us) once his contract expires. C'mon DM! Get R done
+1. Try telling Les & Co. that it's "disgusting". They'd probably tell you to immediately leave the room.
