This will be interesting how this all plays out.

There are things we just don't know. Like how much Fertitta is willing to spend in luxury tax. And much of a discount Jordan is willing to give Houston.

We do know that Capela is likely to get a big offer. And I think Capela would be the Rockets preference if money is not an issue.

Capela cost 225% of this year's salary until he signs with someone. He can also be re-signed above the cap. DeAndre Jordan requires either the Rockets to strip down to under the cap to sign him or in a S&T give up asset to give him money. The difference to the Rockets flexibility is night and day even if they have the same salary.

imo: ppl are reading this as implying a Lin situation. A Lin/Asik "poison pill" can't occur. cyberx is probably alluding to things that have nothing to do with poison pills / "backloading".

correct...and even Parsons wasn't eligible for the Arenas Rule.

You can't "poison pill" a player who has Full Bird Rights, which includes *all* first rounders and Chandler Parsons, since Morey was smart enough to sign him to a 4yr rookie deal originally....for the very reason to avoid other teams being able to pull a "Gilbert Arenas" on us.

here's how @BimaThug explains it wrt Parsons.

(NOTE: Parsons is not subject to the “Gilbert Arenas Rule” that governed the structure of the contracts that the Rockets handed out to Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin. The Arenas Rule is limited solely to one- and two-year veterans. There is no “poison pill” that another team could work into an offer sheet for Parsons.) -- David Weiner

imo: Another example of distasteful offer sheets is DMo's.

DMo and Parsons' deal were distasteful to Morey, because Parsons had a Player Option and DMo had Team Option exercise dates earlier than preferred (plus CBA-defined Likely bonuses) that he'd prefer not to have. So, regardless of the fact that Lin-style "poison-pill" / "back-loading" isn't an issue here, there are some things that are distasteful.

    Things Morey might not want:
    • Player Option
    • Max pay (or "Likely" bonuses that's he's required to match that would lead to Max pay)
    • Trade kicker
    • fwiw: my understanding is that another team cannot make Capela a Designated Player

The first thing that comes to my mind is Otto Porter's contract. 4 year max deal offered by a losing team like Brooklyn, with a 15% trade kicker, same story may well happen next year to Clint.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Do not go backwards in talent - stay with the better player. Clint is a much better player than DeAndre and will only get better.

Stay on target, stay on target !

Their numbers are far different. Got to remember, Jordan is playing 7 more minutes on the court than Clint

those deals happened right after the cap exploded and almost every team had a good amount of cap space

the cap isn’t jumping up like that anymore and much fewer teams have any significant amount of cap room...the market was a lot tighter this past summer

Capela will be getting paid tho, his production is incredible given the amount of minutes that he plays

Is Tillman willing to pay the gazillion dollar luxury tax that comes, you know, the year after?

it doesn't mean that other teams aren't going to offer Capela a ridiculous salary. you don't always have to backload.

to me, that's also poison pill. regardless of what the Rockets do, we'd end up matching or not matching a ridiculous salary. and it will derail us.

i don't think this is avoidable. i think Morey will ask Capela to go out and get something instead of preventing him from entertaining, and Morey will need to face the music, so to speak.

if Deandre wants to come here and take a paycut next year, he's gonna give us a plan B that's worth considering.

only real upgrade for me is that there’s no question of if DJ could handle 30+ minutes every single night like there is with Clint and DJ is stronger so he’s less likely to get bullied by bigs like Steven Adams...DJ has been the better rim protector although he’s slipped in that area this season...Idk if it has more to do with a lack of motivation because his team sucks or decline

other than that, I think that Clint is better in several other aspects of the game and fits what we’re trying to do perfectly

Clint is better offensively, and their rebounding is pretty much a wash

that center position seems pretty pivotal in this offense. my general attitude is the same as it is with everything. if morey wants him then i want him.

I hope Capela stays and we find a way to get George or Lebron, but just a thing to consider, Capela might be the only piece to make the Cavs sit down for a conversation about a sign & trade for Lebron, if we won't be able to dump enough salary, a sign trade would would be the only way to make it work, maybe the best way actually.

    i'll also add:
    - Clint finishes better at the rim, improved his game in the paint significantly. leading the league in FG%.
    - Deandre runs PnR very well, and can even improve if he gets 48 minutes of Harden + CP.
    - Rebounds, i'll give Deandre a slight edge
    - Freethrows, Clint no question
    - Defense, Clint is leading the league in defensive rating atm

Do not want . As a backup? For the min?Maybe . Clint earned his spot here . Clint put the work in year in and year out . D.J. ? Wasn’t this the same guy who didn’t even bother giving us a meeting during free agency? Now that we’re kicking ass, he wants to join.

Morey is not Rick Smith. There is no way he lets a younger, better player walk (who is perfect for his system) in order to sign a vet with subpar and/or declining skills.

If DJ is actually serious, come here for $3MM per and be the backup to Capela. Now THAT would be a home town discount.

Harden and Chris are by far the best two pick and roll passers in the NBA i cant see Clint leaving. BTW, SAS was right.

Well, It depends on what kind of discount we are talking here. If Clint gets offered a max (25 mill), and DJ is willing to sign for around 15 mill, you obviously have to heavily consider that.

The next point is that a promise from DJ could open up a deal for us to move Clint for value at a forward position. Could S&T Clint for a forward like LBJ/PG/J.Parker.

So while I view DJ as a less valuable player, his commitment could open up a oppurtunity to upgrade the team.
