    aelliott,

The only leverage I see from Carmelo's point of view is:

    1) Trade me because I am leaving, but.......

    2) Trade me where I want to go or I will not agree to an extension and no reasonable team will want me without that extension booked!

Now, true, Denver can trade him to a team that does not care about the extension, but, that is a BIG gamble on Denver's and the other team's part.

By making that move, Denver would surely have to accept less or poorer trade assets in return.

If I was Carmelo, I would want it all:

    1) the big contract
    2) maximum exposure/marketing
    3) the team with the best parts to enable a championship (more exposure)

Item one is easy with all three teams (Houston will earn him more because of tax implications).
Item two is arguable in that the NY/NJ teams have network exposure, but, Houston does have the whole Chinese/international connection/marketing promise.
Item three can only be Houston (now) of the three choices. One never knows what NY MIGHT be able to do, but, things have not gone to plan for them so far.

Yeah, but all of his success with the Nets was in the ABA. All be more specfic. Melo could be remembered to be the guy who brought at least one NBA championship to the Nets.

There is no way any sane person would want to screw over their future team especially when they will get the max regardless. He might get a little less but he's going to be rich either way.

Actually - No sane person thinks the Nets have a better chance of winning than the Nuggets.

If Denver just wants to bluff then a better play would be the ever popular Bynum/Odum rumor that gets floated about every single FA would be a better choice.

So, why does Anthony go along with this charade? He wants NY to give up more assets so that he can play on an even weaker team? If he wants to go to NY all he has to do is say that and say that there aren't any other acceptable options. What's Denver going to do? Unless Denver wants to be Cleveland of the West they can't risk that.

I think you're misunderstanding my point. Carmelo definitely has leverage with Denver. He has a ton of it. My point is that the idea that he's not really interested in Houston but is throwing that rumor out there to somehow gain leverage makes no sense.

An interest in Houston does him absolutely no good if he really wants to go to NY. In fact it might hurt because Denver might be more likely to hold off for a better deal...something like what Houston could offer.

Carmelo's true leverage is exactly the scenario that you described...I'm going to NY and I wont' sign an extension with anyone except the Knicks. If he plays that card, he completely cuts the Nuggets legs out from under them.

Lots of reasons he might want to come to Houston, I won't argue with that. But that's different than the scenario that I was responding to, the "He's just using us for leverage". By no means am I saying that he doesn't have a legitimate interest in Houston. In fact, if we're really on his "List" then I'd think that he probably does have an interest.

Just as long as it doesn't end up as "The Decision II".

Again, Carmelo holds all the cards.....he will decide where he gets to play, and the Nuggets will be forced to get what they can...it happens all the time.

The Nugs have ZERO leverage, just like Toronto....I tried to say that then and people were like...NO...Toronto will just let him walk....uh, yeah, never happen.

Same thing here.....Denver has to get the best it can from wherever MELO wants to go.

I understand NY, with Amare etc....

And the Nyets are interesting with the new Russian Billionaire and they are moving to Brooklyn, which is where Melo is from.....

And, maybe he really does have interest in Houston too......

At the end of the day, MELO WILL DECIDE...and Denver will get what it can.

The people on the Nuggets board are saying the Houston rumor was made up, and that it is all driven by the press like the CP3 stuff.

    Man, you just never know.

If he doesn't go along, Denver doesn't have to take the trash offer they may be getting from the NY. Then he plays out this year in Denver, signs w/NY next year under the new rules (less money) to a team the had to renounce everyone so they could sign him. oh and he's not the one behind the rumor - Denver is.

Somewhat weaker but I don't think NY will go all-in either like I had in a previous post. Most likely a ploy to get them to sweaten the pot a little more by adding Randolph with Gallinari. I'm sure Melo is ok with that if it gets him the money and the location he's looking for right now - before the new CBA.

With no other trade partners, NY can get away with a better-than-nothing deal - which is what NY probably had on the table.

Denver will deal him to his only location - NYK. But they want a better-than-nothing deal and the only way to drive the price up is to come up with other "bidders" - and what better imaginary bidders than the Nets and Rockets to scare the other team into bumping the pot. (and now Chicago, and ...)

Oh god I hate the thread title. To me when I glance at it it says 'Carmelo signs multiyear deal with Rockets' then I read it properly.
