IIRC, he demanded a trade to the Rockets.

Somebody help me out on the whole "leverage" thing that keeps getting mentioned. I'm just not getting it.

How dd the Rockets interest in Chris Bosh help him any? He ended up signing for less money than he could have most anywhere else. Toronto didn't agree to a SnT until after he had announced that he was going to outright sign with Miami. So, how did Houston's interest help Bosh? Miami was always wiling to split their cap space between the three, Houston had no effect on that. By the time Toronto decided to do a SnT, Houston was already out of the picture. Unless I'm missing something the Rockets had zero effect on Bosh's dealings

What about Carmelo? He wants to sign and extension now, but not with Denver. Ok, fair enough. At this point Anthony is on his way to becoming public enemy #1 in Denver. Lebron lite if you will. If Denver truely believes that he's gone, then they need to trade him now not later...too much of a distraction. Once the the fans in Denver are convinced that he's leaving then he'll start getting booed at home and that's never good.

So how would saying that he's willing to sign in Houston give Anthony any leverage? If he truely want's to go to NY or NJ then how does mentioning a team that can offer a better deal than those teams help him? If anything it would make Denver more likely to hold out for a better deal rather than accepting whatever NY or NJ would offer. If Anthony wanted to force his way to NY his best option would to just tell Denver that he won't resign with them and he'll only agree to an extension if traded to NY. That would pretty much force Denver's hand. They either deal with NY or let him walk for nothing after the season. Money? Anthony is going to get the max wherever he signs his next contract so the money isn't an issue. If Anthony wasn't willing to come here how would mentioning Houston benefit him?

Start Lee and bring Martin off the bench. Balanced attack.

So we're going to pay Martin $10 million a year to come of the bench behind the kid he trains with in the off-season?

    My bad.

Okay. FIRST BIG NAME PLAYER TO EXPRESS INTEREST IN HOUSTON SINCE TRACY MCGRADY.

Funny how TMac did not work out, nor did Pippen. Hopefully when we land Melo, we get a different result. Third time the charm? ;)

The team with the most resources has the leverage. Involving that team only makes other teams part of the equation because New York and New Jersey cant match.

He benefits way more financially from signing a max extension this season than to wait and sign a new max contract after the new CBA comes into effect after next season.

So it benefits Carmelo to be on a team he wants to be on after next season by next season. That's Denver's leverage.

I don't know if he really can force Denver's hand. The reason Melo wants to do a sign and trade now instead of waiting to sign with NY outright is because the CBA could really change after this upcoming season. If Melo is only willing to go to NY and not allow Denver to get the best return possible, then Denver can say "ok fine, you can walk at the end of the season and sign with them for a lot less money." I think Melo realizes this, and that is why he is open to being SNT to other teams.

Why would Denver even bother? If Anthony truely didn't want to come here then that would soon leak too and you are back at square 1. Are you thinking that Anthony is trying to help Denver get more assets out of NY? That doesn't sound too likely.

Anyone know of any Nuggets fan forums? I'd just like to see their thoughts on this.

First off, let me start off by saying I have read about 200 comments so far, some of you get the gist of how things work in the NBA but some still cant quite get it.

We have a better chance of landing Carmelo then most of you guys think. Not trying to get ones hopes up but it is true. Our biggest setback is Lala, Carmelo's Wife. Born in Brooklyn. She would love for him to play in NY, just as much as he would love to play in NY. Also, we would most likely lose A.B.

But our counterparts are pretty enticing to someone of his stature. One, Carmelo know that Houston is a city that he could live in. Also a city that he can win in. And he wants to win. Kevin Martin and Carmelo already are good friends and are also both part of Team Jordan. Carmelo knows that he has a better chance to make it farther(Playoffs) in the West, within the next few years. The Knicks are not big enough for Paul, Anthony and Amare. On Denvers side, we have the most to offer. The most in expiring contracts, The Most Talent, The Best possible picks. If Carmelo was to get traded its no doubt that Houston would be the best possible choice for Denver.

Morey would love to have Martin and Melo running up and down that court together. Throw Kyle in there getting down and dirty, a 7'6" Chinese Wall. We would be instant favorites to knock out the Lakers in 7!!!!!

Understood, that would benefit him the most. But what did we learn this offseason? High end guys will leave some money on the table to end up in the place/situation that they feel will allow them to be successful.

After seeing Lebron, Wade and Bosh take less money to be where they wanted to be, do you really think Denver is going to risk losing Anthony for nothing? Heck, I'm sure that his additional endorsments from playing in NYC would make up a good chunk of that.

Carmelo ends up a very rich guy either way, it's just a matter of how rich. if he ends up only making $90 million over the next 5 years then that's a pretty nice consolation prize.

Obviously Anthony would like to be able to name the place where he plays and also get the most money. The question is which of those two are more important to him? Truthfully he might not have to make that decision, all he has to do is convince Denver that he's willing to take less money. If he does that then it's a done deal.
