We don't even know how good Yao is at this stage. Reports state he will retire if his foot breaks again, so this very season could be his last. I don't think a player like him should be called a "closer" unless we know he could still perform and be the "closer". Even if Yao is perfectly healthy, he has never been known as a reliable closer for us. Defense overwhelms him too easily.

As for AB, he is not a closer. You look at closers like Kobe, Wade, Anthony and then you look at AB. How could you honestly put him amongst that list? Anthony fits in that list of closers/superstars/near-unguardables. Nobody on our team fits that category, not even Yao. Yao is easily shut down, but Anthony on the other hand...

Melo, Martin, Battier, Bud, Lee, Taylor.

We would have too many guys at the 2 and 3, so it makes sense to trade CBud. And Denver would be getting lots of value and good upside in CBud.

His numbers are not that impressive. Other teams aren't going to be scouting Budinger alone. So I'm guessing they just look at the stats and basic game footage. They wouldn't over-value him that's for sure.

if it happened, the great irony would be a week ago we had a rotation of Shane, Bud, and Trevor at the 3, and they'd all be elsewhere...

I was only focusing at the poster idea which is most team think that Budinger is a scrub which completely false and most team would be excited to have him.

My absolute LAST post on this as it does not belong in this thread.

I think Kobe has a closure career rate of around 40%....late in games...he had a good year this last year but it was not his norm.

I believe Brooks is right around 38% which is above league average and above other players you listed, as well as Dirk etc....

No one is an efficient closer late.....no one....the idea is that you get way up on teams and don't rely on so called closers.....because there is no such mythical thing....

Now.....I am done with this.....we can all go back to seeing what it will take to get Melo to Houston........

That is the thread topic......not me, not Brooks....MELO....

I know his number aren't impressive, he is rookie for godsake, but he showed flashes last season that he is pretty good player with a bright future, and IMO he is not a scrub as of now.

Very, very interesting. I'd prefer to land Chris Paul, but Carmelo could be an excellent consolation prize. He's a star, maybe a super star, but not a super duper star (Wade, LeBron, Kobe, Paul, etc.). It would be a huge upgrade at the 3.

Morey has talked so much about how Yao is the most efficient NBA offensive player when the Rockets are in the bonus. He's tried to stack the roster with players who draw fouls (Lowry, Martin, Lee). Add Melo, and you've got a team that will drive and get a ton of fouls and make this team scary dangerous on the offensive end during the closing of quarters.

Defensively? That could hurt. Either Battier is gone, or Shane comes off the bench. Melo and Martin on the wings does not inspire a great deal of confidence. It'll be great to have Yao back this season, but it would suck if he's picking up tons of fouls because the other team keeps getting open lanes to the basket.

Still, I'd love to have him on the team, but I would not break the bank to get him. I think Budinger has to go if we make this trade. There won't be enough time at the three, and the Nuggets are going to want young, cheap talent in this deal. Probably Hill as well, but maybe Taylor or Patterson. I can't see Morey giving up Martin after coveting him so long. The goal has to be 3 stars. Obviously our NY picks are huge here and I see them both going to the Nuggets, and either Battier or Jeffries is gone.

Then there's the question of an additional poison pill to get us to take on a bad contract. The trade exception could come into play here, or the leftover Battier\Jeffries player. The question is will Les boldly go back into deep luxury tax land. I think he will if he's convinced this team will compete for a title. I'd love to know Morey's thoughts on that.

I do think we have a great shot of landing Melo if Morey and Les are determined to make it happen. I think they'd go all in if it was young players, picks, and expirings for Melo. I'm not so sure if it requires additional players being shipped from Denver.

But DAMN, what an exciting Wednesday morning. I thought this was supposed to be the slow part of the year.

BECAUSE AB is a closer from long range.... what he should learn how to close out by getting to the basket.

The current offer is the Knicks dog hotplate of Eddy Curry, Gallinari, Randolph and zero first round draft picks.

The likely best offer they're hearing is Dallas' Chandler/Butler/first rd pick.

They are looking for an offer that will make them WANT to trade out Melo. They're getting 70 cents on the dollar no matter what. It's only about putting forth the best bid.

Jeffries - Chase - Hill - Patterson - Taylor - both Knick picks immediately kills the NY offer.

And we would be much better overall.....at least on offense.

I hope we don't give up any other pieces though......that seemed pretty fair...

They get young assets in Bud and Hill, they get cap relief in Battier's expiring deal, and they get a pick or so...

The Rockets clear a log jam (we are not going to play a 10 man rotation) and they still are strong from top to bottom.

We would need a backup SF, but with Melo at 38mpg.....you can cover with Lee and Martin for a few minutes a game.
