I recall him being more effective after the benching... or maybe I'm just jaded by that 6 TD game he had.

Hoyer was also more effective the early part of last season... and I'll trust BOB (for now) to know if he's capable or not of running the offense and being better than Fitz was.

I'm just not going to put many eggs on any side of the basket till we see what he does on the field in real game-planned situations... I also expect this offense to struggle, regardless of who the QB is, if they can't get a consistent running game.

And then he remembered he was Brian Hoyer and threw 8 picks to only 1 TD in his last 4 starts.

I don't really get the outrage. Hoyer and Mallet are basically the same QB. Flip a coin as far as I'm concerned.

It's not like BOB chose Hoyer over Andrew Luck...

Exactly. For a guy who took a team who had no business sniffing the playoffs to within a half of making it, this sky is falling mantra over hic choice between two mediocre at best QB three weeks before the season starts when none of us sees even a microscopic % of what the coaches see is confusing. Not surprising, mind you.

If nothing else, I'd at least expected that Mallet just destroyed in both preseason games while Hoyer tripped over his own feet while sharting himself during his only pass which was picked-off by a 10 year old for who returned it for a TD given the way some people are reacting.

I totally get that neither is Andrew Luck. But I don't see Hoyer and Mallett as all that similar. Mallett releases quicker and has a much stronger arm. I think his ceiling is higher too. I think we know what Hoyer is in all likelihood...but I'm less convinced I know for sure what Mallett can potentially be. I suppose I disagree that this team is in a "win now" mode such that they need to go with the "safer" pick.

Having said all that, I'm not outraged. It's what I expected based off what we were hearing all offseason long.

People look at his efficiency numbers and decide that he was better than the past, but it's hard to say if he really was. He was simply asked to do less - when you're given an all-world running back and asked to throw less, you *should* be more efficient. But he also threw for less attempts and yards per game (27th in the league) - so it's not really clear if he was actually any better than he was in the past. Priority #1 last year for defenses was stopping Foster, not Fitz.

It's like asking if you're better NBA player scoring 15pts a game at a 50% clip than 20pts at a game at a 47% clip. You're more efficient, but you're also doing less and not the focus of the defenses.

Sure he was asked to do less, but in that his efficiency went up and he wasn't making the foolish turnovers that had plagued his career up until that point....I mean, isn't that being better than in the past?

The Seahawks ask less of Russell Wilson than any QB in the NFL not named Kaepernick yet some people still think he's an awesome QB. Isn't there something to be said for doing a good job of playing the role your team needs you for?

There are many people here still not willing to accept the fact that this current Texans regime is doing a terrible job on talent evaluation.

Even though there are so many failure on the mid early round picks the last few years and FA signing like Ed Reed.

And that's exactly why its so funny/sad and ridiculous to see people will even expect anything like "a high ceiling" out of either Hoyer and Mallet.

Exactly! I give BoB a pass here because he DID NOT create this situation. That's on the organization. They simply did not address this critical need when they had the opportunity to do so and now the perverbial chickens have come home to roost. The situation is further excacerbated with Indy and now Tenn solidifying their QB positions while the Texans continue to stumble along with journeymen at that position. BoB knows he only has so long before folks here put down the koolaid and start going after his butt so he has to put some wins on the board now. Believe me, BoB knows better than any of us just how bad the QB position on this team is vis-a-vis the rest of the league but at this point in time there's nothing that can be done but to hope things turn out for the best. But, as I have posted before, hope is NOT a plan unless it somehow results in their landing one of the two wild card slots or win the division outright. Now that would be change that we can all believe in!

I happen to like Tenn's choice of Marcus Mariota. I think that, barring injury, he'll become a fine pro QB in time as he appears to have the maturity and temperament for the position. Luck we can all see how good he is now and, again barring injury, is going to be special. I am just not sold on Winston as I believe that his arrogance and innate sense of entitlement will prove to be his undoing. I am also a fan of Bridgewater (Alex Smith 2.0 as BTG calls him) for the same reasons as Mariota.

Insert Vince Young, Jake Locker, Zac Mettenberger, Marcus Marriotta (and 3 coaches later)... is there not a better example of how bad the QB carousel can really be on a team/organization if you keep believing in the wrong guy?

He looks the part... but the issue has always been decision making, consistency, and what's between the ears.

Plenty of strong arm/quick release QB's fizzle out/fail... in fact more of those fail than the "noodle-arm but smart and makes the right decision" QB's that seem to get a job year after year.

I like Mariota, but it's way too early to say the Titans have found their franchise QB. Might as well include Jax in the conversation since they drafted Bortles last year. We know Luck is elite but you really can't say anything about Tenn and Jax yet.

Not necessarily. Efficiency and volume are both measures of being good. A player who is more efficient, all else equal, is better than a player who is less efficient. Similarly, a player who does more is better than one who does less at the same efficiency. In Fitz's case, one measure went up and the other went down. It's hard to say if he was any better - if he was asked to do more, could he have done it? If not, he was no better - he was just put in a lesser role.

Absolutely. However, the one critique of Wilson (compared to a less efficient Luck) is that if he does have to carry a team and throw 40 times a game, we're not sure if he can.

For the Seahawks, they didn't need Wilson to do that so it works great and he's the perfect QB for that team because he is so efficient. For the Texans, they needed more out of their QB, both last year (as evidenced by the great defense and RB and them still being mediocre), and probably especially this year with no Arian Foster.

So true and it is early yet but I simply like what I see thus far. The point to be made here is that these teams are ahead of the Texans in terms of having a QB where the arrow appears to be pointing upward whereas here, it's "let's see what BoB can milk out of ________".

That's not a very good and valid argument.

Yes the Titans went through a bunch of QB prospects that did not work out well so far.

But given their franchise situation during that period of time, hard to argue that they are wrong to make those moves.

The Texans, which are in the same boat the last few seasons, did not choose to go the same logical path - address the most important position for your team first, but rather try to work around to build an overall better team roster first.

But the key issue is : that did not work out either as majority of the early round picks are failure.

    That's why people are upset.

Teams like Seahawks and the Cardinals also worked around and focus on building an overall good team first without sucking all the way to gamble on an first round QB, but they worked out way better than the Texans.

This is like the NBA, if you do not have a GM as good as Morey, you would better just to tank all the way like the 76ers and go with the traditional way to build your team.

Yes you will still get Joel Embiid sometime, but it's still much worthy than stuck at what the Texans having right now.
