An NBA D-League source said Wednesday an agreement between the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and the city of Edinburg was reached to build a new wellness and sports center, which will serve as the basketball team’s new practice facility.
The facility will replace the Edinburg Parks and Recreation building, which is approximately 84,000 square feet and sits at 315 E. Palm Drive near Cats Stadium, the home of the Edinburg CISD’s high school football programs. Aside from serving the Vipers, the new venue will also host parks and rec tournaments, high school basketball and volleyball tournaments and will consist of a dance studio and a game room, among other things.
The source wished to remain anonymous because the organization was not ready to formally announce the project.
Attempts on Wednesday afternoon to reach representatives of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation were unsuccessful. The next stage of the process is coordinating engineering plans and that there is no set timetable for when the new facility would be completed, according to the source.
The source said the Vipers have been working to come to a deal with the city for the last three months. The Vipers’ practice facility had been the Summit Sports Club in Pharr before a July 14 fire damaged their practice court, leaving the team without a place to practice.
In the meantime, the Vipers are still looking for a temporary place to practice until the new facility is built.
Vipers president Bert Garcia said Tuesday that it looks as if the team will use UTPA’s Field House, but nothing has been confirmed because the organization is attempting to work around the university’s athletic schedule.
