Contrary to some, this would be absolutely detrimental to the franchise and would set us back. Les is really becoming the Dan Snyder of NBA
If Morey is fired and JVG becomes head coach and GM I'm probably done with this team thats absurd after he couldnt even get us out of the first round
Just the contracts and completing the trade details for someone else's desired target, is a puppet as far as gms go. Most gms around the league are the ones who decide the trade targets, draft, and have also some input in some aspects of coaching (i.e ask that the coaches give more playing time to some young players to develop them). Also usually the coaches have input on trade targets and drafting and free agency. It is supposed to be a collaboration. Why should Morey accept having a lot of his power removed when most teams in the league would give him much more than becoming in essence an assistant gm to a coach.
If you are not yet aware of it, Morey hired those scrubs that you want to discard. How ironic is that?
Wait, so this is about JVG taking the job and the GM reporting to him? That sounds good to me, having a BBall guy who is at the top. And as a by product Morey is rumored to leave and Rosas taking the GM role? Man this offseason is crazy. DD
Head Coach wants full control in front office in order to have full control in locker room in order to have full control on the court. Harden didn't have to listen to McHale. Harden doesn't have to listen to anyone. This is Steve Francis all over again.
In regards to JVG, we should be able to see the reasonableness of the dialogue here. Saying Morey is out is a stretch in my opinion. But I have no doubt that JVG is negotiating from a position of strength. He was let go by this franchise before. And JVG had been one of the most outspoken critics of the firing of coaches. Pray tell why would anybody expect him to walk back into the same relationship dynamics as before. OF COURSE (JVG's pet phrase) he's going to look for a better opportunity with more personnel control. And I can't blame him on that. Look at the most successful coach in the league. Pops has had absolute control of that organization for years. And they're the most successful organization in the Association during his tenure. He's the absolute boss over there. If he wants to dump a player......He dumps him. Ala SJax. Don't matter who they are. If they don't play Pops way they gone. And that keeps the air very clear of muddle. Players either want to go there and be Spurs or they dont and Pops doesn't sweat it and try to be a chameleon to attract talent. Pops attracts players that want to win Pops way and they KNOW they're gonna win with Pops. Pops and the Spurs are the ultimate winning model and quality coaches out there like JVG are looking and likely demanding that kind of set up to go back in the coaching ranks. Combine this fact with the fact that Daryl doesnt see great value in coaches. JVG and him are buds. But JVG ain't no fool. He's sniffed this out about Morey and buddies or not he's not going to allow himself to be devalued Morey's way. So we should be able to easily see. We're not going to be able to operate status quo and get a quality coaching hire like JVG. This is why the "Morey is gone" rhetoric is being flung about. It's much more likely that if JVG is brought in as coach that he is given the title of coach and President of basketball operations and Morey reports to him with Morey having to dump guys JVG don't want and go after guys that JVG wants to recruit with JVG having say in the draft as well. Now.....the other direction would be to hire a guy like Joerger or Vogel, a younger coach, and maybe an analytic (Joerger) who no doubt wants to work with a guy like Morey and wouldn't require as much organizational control as JVG possibly would. So the situation appears fluid and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. But in any case, I find it extremely difficult to believe Morey is out. I can see Morey moving over to accept a shared control or a diminished control of the basketball operations with the new coach beginning a working part of the front office. But fired? No. Don't see it.
Because I don't think it's about power at the end of the day - it's about winning. I don't think either JVG or Morey are anything but winning. I don't think Morey feels he has intuitive basketball knowledge like Gundy does. This isn't about power, it's about JVG and Morey taking the best of what they are and collaborating to make both great people decisions and great number decisions. I think those two working together would be a fantastic duo.
What player would want to come to Houston with Morey trying to find loop holes and whatever else necessary to give them the lowest salary possible? Plus, the media doesn’t like Morey, and it doesn’t look good for the Rockets. If I were to give a new coach full control, it would be Kenny Smith (If he impressed in his interview). Good coach, players respect him, media guy, won championships here, could easily recruit players. Durant etc. (imo) would be excited to play for Kenny Smith.
