Difference is Lebron would actually be a great investment for Europe. MLS was out of their mind for even giving Beckham that kind of money. And I watch soccer.

Good post. Not to mention LeBron's "barrel myself into the paint, create contact then wait for the whistle" style of play wouldn't fly in Europe. Those officials know better.

Well, my job is mostly about money, I'll gladly admit that.

If someone offered to double my salary for two years while I work in Europe, and I am also free to return to my old job whenever I want to?

My God I have a feeling some of you are too young, don't have families of your own or so hand-fed you wouldn't know how to work a damn microwave.. If I were Lebron I wouldn't even hesitate even for a second on a 50mil/yr contract. NBA = Business... It's called the entertainment business and players are nothing but assets to each organization.. If you ever worked for a fortune 500 company it's not any different.. Making business decisions like these separates the men from the boys.

So as long as these players don't come back, their money is tax free? I mean once they make residence back in the US, don't they have to pay tax on what they bring?

Nope.. You are taxed only if your making money while in the US. For instance I had several tech buddies go to iraq and made 100K tax free..When they moved back it was still tax free. Now if your living in the US and have your money overseas making money then you are obliged to pay taxes on the money you made.

Why not take a 1yr paid vacation, net $50m, nail all kinds of different flavors of women, and average a triple double with 1 arm tied behind his back?

    No.

PS I love the "women" argument - as if it's really hard for LeBron to get laid here.

No, it doesn't. I went over this in a similar thread some time ago and to me, it's NBA every single time. As a basketball player, the only way I go to Europe is if some European league is considered better than the NBA.

And tested911 is way off. I'm a college student living in a foreign country with no financial help. I get payed close to the minimum. It's not like I don't value money. It's actually the opposite. And that's the point, you don't need 50 million to get by. 20 is much more than enough.

I think Lebron only considers a move... if he wins a NBA championship...

most players who go play for thier country in the Olympics...

tend to want to win a NBA championship atleast once...

I could see LeBron doing for basketball in Europe what Pele did for soccer in the US, especially if he wins an NBA Championship or two. LeBron could leave the NBA in his 30's, while he's still a great player, and play a few years in Europe. He'd be a huge star, might could make more money, and with the shorter schedule, could extend his productive career a few years.

If David Stern loses the leagues most marketable player to the European teams it should go down as almost a big of a travesty as the WNBA on his tenure. I still do not believe Lebron would do this. Seriously, how much money does a single person need? Most people would kill to be in the NBA, not the European league.

I think its funny that James threw out a ridiculous number and has ESPN, etc reporting on it like its news. (1) Of course he would for $50M. (2) Of course no team owner could pay him that, field a competitive team, and still make money.
