I can almost guarantee, barring health or retirement, that Wade and Gary will end up head coaches by 2015 if they are fired. I doubt the same could be said for Rick Smith as a GM.
I still come back to this . . . I say Rick gets another year with another coach because I cannot honestly say this team has 2-7 Talent I feel like it has been COACHED to 2-7 I would like to see what another coach does with the same talent and GM If it still sucks . . then then GM can go too Rocket River Doesn't matter how fine the groceries are . . .if you don't put them together correctly it won't be an enjoyable meal
???????? Wade hasn't been offered a HC position after strong defensive seasons with Houston. How in the world does he get one when the wheels fall off the bus and he's let go? And what team in their right mind would offer Kubiak anything other than an OC position? Face it - we've got two slightly above average coordinators - a figurehead/crappy GM and no HC No one is salivating over the opportunity to hire any of our coaching staff.
Look at his drafting history - who he has let walk in FA - who he has signed in FA and tell me with a straight face he deserves another shot. Those that say Kubiak/Phillips have major input in personnel - too damn bad. If you don't like what they are doing, speak up. You are the GM - not a lap dog. You don't watch a murder take place and when sentencing comes down try to act like you didn't agree with it so you should walk free.
Yeah, I'd be beyond stunned if either Gary or Wade ever gets another HC offer, much less by 2015. In addition to their mediocre-at-best track records, Wade is extremely old (retread times infinity) and Gary is coming off a mini-stroke that has a 1-in-3 shot of becoming a full-blown stroke without significant changes to his lifestyle. I usually agree with Donny a lot, but I'd be more than happy to make a wager on that near-guarantee.
right? I was shocked to see Donny post that. Someone must have hacked his account. At least they didn't post a pic of him stroking his penis
1) Wade and Tampa Bay ring a bell? 2) Gary may scare teams off with his health condition, but over the next 2 years it's likely 9-10 coaches (or more) will be fired. Gary and Wade will be some of the only "retread" coaches out there with recent successful track records (that actually want to keep coaching). Given that, I like their chances. Of course, this all depends on who else gets fired this year (Marvin Lewis, and guys like him, would create more competition, etc.) 3) I'm more confident that Gary/Wade will be HCs again if fired before Rick will be a GM again. That's the main takeaway.
He didn't get the job in Tampa. He wanted it. He didn't get it. I can't imagine those guys getting jobs in 2015 as head coaches. I'd be really surprised. Certainly not impossible, but I personally would be surprised. Totally agreed with you on Rick Smith.
W/Tampa Bay I remember some puff's of smoke, but no fire. He was on their long-list of candidates and pulled himself before an interview. IIRC, he wasn't really that high on their list, but I could be wrong. Gary stands a shot another run - but I think he'll have to put in work as an OC first. Wade's done and I wouldn't be surprised if he retires soon. If you're just spouting the Rick Smith sucks kool-aid - i'm already punch drunk and have my glass out ready for another.
Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but didn't Uncle Bob give Wade some kind of nugget to stop his job search? Also... Possible openings this year: Ron Rivera (Carolina) Jason Garrett (Dallas) Jim Schwarts (Detroit) Mike Munchak (Tennessee) Likely openings this year: Joe Philbin (Miami) Leslie Frazier (Minnesota) Tom Coughlin (New York) Dennis Allen (Oakland) Greg Schiano (Tampa) I don't know how many young studs are waiting to get hired, but there will be plenty of openings, and all the guys on the hot seat are not as successful as Kubiak or Wade (except Coughlin, who will almost undoubtedly retire). I'll admit I was a little ambitious with my prediction. But this all stems from my serious disdain for Rick Smith and the deflecting that is going on towards the coaches, who I think are above average for their respective sides of the ball. Unlike Smith, whom I'd put in the bottom 3rd of NFL GMs.
Not that I'm aware of. I remember he said he was interviewing because he wanted to be a head coach again...but Tampa went young. They need to clean house all the way around. Smith has done very little to suggest he deserves this job going forward.
I'm ok with that. But if Rick Smith stays I will give our new coaching staff a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding. I think you can replace Smith and Marciano and salvage something. But I'm not going to be totally busted up if everyone goes in one fell swoop.
Me either, but it is possible if they finish the season poorly. Same with all the other career underachievers in that list. All trending upwards currently, but this is definitely a make or break year for most of them.
I don't think Kubiak gets another job without having SUCCESS as an offensive coordinator. When this is all said and done, his resume will be very much similar to Norv Turner's... who got more than multiple head coaching jobs after his first fail stints. Both were Super Bowl winning offensive coordinators... both are thought of as QB gurus... and both have led teams to multiple playoff appearances. Wade has to be close to done... I wouldn't imagine any team willing to take a chance on having him be the one to lead them for years to come.
Wade is a used up retread who has been unsuccessful in multiple stops. Other than "work for cheap!" I laugh (especially now) about anybody who thought he was a viable head coaching candidate for a franchise that wasn't in "fk it" mode. Not even 2 years ago when the Texans D was actually decent was he a likely hire. The optics on bringing him in to a moribund franchise are terrible. I can guarantee -not almost guarantee - he's not a head coach again in the NFL (other than maybe for Uncle Bob's family bizness) Kubiak isn't going to be burning up his cellphone batteries either. His 9 lives in Houston are very Houston-specific. Neither of them gets an HC gig anywhere win the next 1.5 years. Kubiak has a shot eventually since he's younger but he's got to do some penance as an OC (and actually prove he gets non 1990's offenses...) for a few years first. Wade is about as likely an HC as Monte Kiffin at this point.
What if Kubiak surprises us all...and states that he is gonna retire at the end of the season to take care of himself...That would be crazy... Would probably make it easier to axe Smith as well... The Texans need people that draft well...In the hunt for new coaching positions, the Texans should look at Scot McCloughan. He secretly seems to be a reason why the 49ers and Seahawks have had good drafts... He may be a solid choice as the next GM of the Texans... Really, McNair needs to start fresh. Axe everyone, and totally clean house. First hire your GM. Then let him build his management around him.
He was hired to be a HC at Den, Buffalo and Dallas. He took them all to the playoffs his first year there. He has had 8 full seasons as a head coach, hist worst record was 7-9 and next worst was 8-8. Both got him fired. He wont get a HC job because he is too old. Gary isn't good and he will have to be a better OC than he was before because his OC performance will have to cover up that stench of failure he carries.
